UMBC’s Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

<Tagline>Review UMBC’s policies related to campus security</Tagline>

Dear UMBC Community,

Each fall, the UMBC Police Department publishes the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report. I encourage you to take a few moments to review this important material.

In accordance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, this message constitutes notification for our campus community of the availability of the 2025 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.

This report contains crime and fire statistics that were reported to the UMBC Police Department and/or Campus Security Authorities for the most recent three years. Please note that this report tracks incidents based on location—specifically those reported to have occurred on campus, in non-campus university buildings, in property owned or controlled by the university, or on public property immediately adjacent to the campus.

The report also includes information regarding UMBC policies and practices related to campus security and crime reporting. We encourage all members of our community to report security incidents; the report describes how and to whom crimes should be reported.

In addition, the report contains information on campus resources and educational programs, personal safety tips, emergency response and evacuation, and policies regarding student discipline.

The UMBC Police Department appreciates that all members of our community—students, faculty, and staff—are essential partners in making UMBC a safe place to learn, live, and work. The UMBC community's active interest in campus safety is one of our best crime prevention assets.

Copies of the report are also available at the UMBC Police Department or by emailing clery@umbc.edu.

This initiative aims to enhance the digital accessibility of courses across USM institutions and help ensure that all students have equitable access to course materials.

Dr. Laura Rose, Associate Teaching Professor and Psychology Program Director at UMBC Shady Grove, and Dr. Ming Xie, Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency and Disaster Health Systems, will receive funding and support to redesign their courses with accessibility in mind, including implementing universal design principles that benefit all learners.

The project will identify and address barriers in course materials, learning activities, and assessments, building long-term capacity for inclusive design across their departments. The mini grant program aligns with USM's commitment to creating inclusive learning environments where all students can succeed regardless of disability status.

Citing a strong personal interest in accessibility and a commitment to inclusive teaching practices, Dr. Rose hopes to "gain strategies for designing accessible course materials and assignments and using technology in ways that support diverse learning needs" from participating in the program. Prioritizing accessibility is "both timely and essential," she continued, particularly with upcoming requirements for all digital content to be accessible by early 2026.

EDHS Department Chair Dr. Lauren Clay described professor Xie as "student-centered and motivated to champion accessibility at UMBC" and looks forward to learning from her participation in the mini grant as the department prioritizes accessibility across newly revised undergraduate and graduate programs.

Winter Orientation Advising Opportunitities

<Tagline>Help future students and gain great experience</Tagline>

Dear Adjunct Faculty Colleagues,

The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Winter Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming undergraduate students VIRTUALLY during the month of January in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!

Besides compensation, this is a rare chance for adjunct faculty to gain advising experience, highly sought-after in faculty openings, as well as to interact with students outside of the classroom. As an adjunct faculty member myself, I can absolutely say that my teaching effectiveness has been augmented by my advising experience.

Advisors are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per afternoon session and $50 per evening or morning session, with the opportunity to work several sessions during the month. Although there are only a few days during which help is needed in January, advisors in good standing may be invited back to participate in our much larger Summer program afterwards. This is a great opportunity to get a taste without a larger commitment! Participants are also eligible to earn the Orientation Advisor microcredential! More information on microcredentials and Digital Badging can be found here: https://badges.umbc.edu/

We are offering informational sessions for anyone interested or who even just MIGHT be interested in finding out about this exciting opportunity to expand their skillsets, make meaningful connections, serve their departments, and get paid! No RSVP necessary.
