AWM JMM Event: Mathematics on Capitol Hill

<Tagline>Association for Women in Mathematics Event</Tagline>

AWM is sponsoring a day of training and then interactions on Capitol Hill with legislators advocating for support of stem fields and particularly women and minorities in math.

___________________________________________________________

This is the official information which has been circulated by the AWM:

Join the AWM for our Capitol Hill Day visit in conjunction with the Joint

Math Meetings in Baltimore, in January 2019.

See the attached flyer and sign up via our google interest form here!

What is it?

This visit gives AWM members a chance to meet with the offices of their

Senators and Representatives to advocate for legislation affecting women

and other underrepresented groups in the mathematical sciences and in STEM

fields in general.

Who can participate?

-college students, math majors or not, with an AWM chapter or as an individual

-grad students

-faculty

-mathematicians in industry and government jobs

-math majors who now do computer science, data science, or consulting, or

-something else entirely

-anyone who thinks that supporting STEM programs is a good idea

When will it be?

This will be an all-day activity on Tuesday, January 15, 2019. We’ll have

training in the morning, then travel into DC for Congressional meetings in

the afternoon. We will also have an informal meet-and-greet on the evening

on Monday, January 14. AWM doesn’t have funding to bring students in for

Hill Day, but in timing it with the JMM, we hope to provide an opportunity

for more to participate!

Why this matters!

We know there are many benefits to the AWM Hill Day, and hope you find it

to be a rewarding experience:

AWM brings issues of importance to our Congressional representatives,

AWM Members have the opportunity to visit the Hill and learn more about

the legislative process, and

All participants have a phenomenal networking opportunity, to meet women

across sectors (academia, government and industry) and at all stages of

the career spectrum!

Congressional offices now see AWM as a valuable resource. Because of these

visits, offices and committees have turned to AWM on issues concerning

women in math-related fields, from awarding Congressional Medals of Honor

to the women of Hidden Figures, to bills addressing sexual harassment.

Here is a presentation with information about AWM Capitol Hill Day:

****To officially register for the JMM Hill Day, *each participant* should

fill out the following google doc:

<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScsiMUyLdSazMFuC1k_PWsbKYLSCH6PSblV_w_cLetU5KsfQw/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1>

-Note that you can list Senators and Representatives from multiple

states/districts if you have connections there.

The deadline for registration is *December 15*, but if you already know

you want to come, it helps if you fill it out sooner!

Tempers flare in Bahamas finale

Bimini, Bahamas –

The Retrievers men’s basketball team entered Monday night 2-0 in the Bimini Jam tournament, looking to sweep the 0-2 Coyotes of South Dakota. The game started off at a furious pace for UMBC, as they failed to score on their first possession, but forced South Dakota into a shot clock violation on the other end of the floor. They opened up their scoring on the night after junior-guard Ricky Council II drove to the basket and was fouled in the act of shooting. Council would go to the free-throw line and convert his two free-throws to start the evening. After a steal by junior-guard KJ Jackson registered a steal, junior-forward Arkel Lamar would take a long three-point shot that bounced high off the back of the rim and found its way through the net to give UMBC a 5-0 lead. After buckets from Jackson and Lamar, the Retrievers capped off a 9-0 run over the first 5:50 of the game.

South Dakota would respond by going on a quick 8-0 run to make the game close again. UMBC would eventually take an 18-12 lead before South Dakota would take the lead thanks to a long 14-2 run, capped off by a layup with 3:48 left in the half. UMBC would use back to back three-pointers by Council and graduate-forward Joe Sherburne to tie the game at 26-26. South Dakota would outscore the Retrievers 9-5 to end the half with a 35-31 score.

The second started with a Sherburne three-pointer and a layup by Council to give the Retrievers a 36-35 lead. After a three-pointer by South Dakota, and a layup by Jackson, the game would go scoreless for almost four minutes before another South Dakota three-pointer. This started a 7-0 run for the Coyotes that gave them an 8 point lead. The Retrievers would cut that lead to 4 points on a layup by Lamar and a jump-shot for Freshman-guard Jose Placer. The game would be scoreless for three minutes before South Dakota would make another three-pointer.

From there the Retrievers would never find a rhythm. The team would struggle with fouls and turnovers down the stretch. Things began to get chippy between the two teams as whistles blew back-and-forth. Things came to a boiling point with 6:09 in the game as sophomore-guard Josh Rosario was called for a blocking foul, where it appeared that he may not have made contact with the South Dakota player. Rosario threw his arms in the air in disbelief, and the referee gave him a technical foul for the gesture. Coach Ryan Odom was irate with the call, screaming from the sidelines at the referee, and he ran toward the court to argue. Assistant coaches and Lamar ran to Odom to save him from an ejection, or possible suspension that could have resulted from his anger. There were no further fouls assessed, and Odom stayed in the game.

The Retrievers would pull to within 4 points in the last minute of the game, but a turnover by sophomore-forward Brandon Horvath and a missed three-pointer by Sherburne would bring UMBC’s comeback attempt to a halt. South Dakota would win the game 58-52.

UMBC falls to 4-2 on the season with this loss, ending their four-game winning streak. They play again on Saturday as they take on American University at the Event Center.

Retriever Courage launched as campus demands change

In early September, UMBC was faced with a lawsuit alleging that the campus and county police, along with higher-authority officials, mishandled sexual assault allegations. Almost immediately after the news broke, students vented their anger by holding a protest in front of the Commons that ended with a confrontation between students and UMBC’s president Freeman Hrabowski.

Now, two months later, a new initiative has been made to address this issue head-on. Retriever Courage, whose website was launched Nov. 2, aims to unite the UMBC community in better confronting and handling the issue of sexual assault.

“Retriever Courage is something which is largely named after an idea called institutional courage,” explained Adam Harvey, a fourth-year physics graduate student and the chair for the University Steering Committee. “Institutional Courage is about an institution as a whole stepping up and saying, ‘there are things that are not done as well as they could be, and we should change [them].’”

The University Steering Committee, as Harvey describes it, “[talks about] whatever topics we find most pertinent and discuss[es] how senates are handling most situations. Five senates who make up different parts of campus populations meet up at this Committee to further enable collaboration that reaches all around campus.” Harvey’s role as head of this committee includes enabling discussion and initiating agendas for each meeting, along with planning initiatives that the committee has come up with.

Students are required to take online sexual misconduct and drug-abuse trainings that roll out every summer before the start of the school year. These mandatory online modules may not be as effective as previously thought. According to Harvey, “plenty of research shows that mandatory [in-person] training is a very positive force in preventing sexual misconduct.”

The chair of the University Steering Committee explained that mandatory training for faculty and staff will begin sometime around the first week of December, with the goal of student training beginning sometime around spring 2019.

Roy Prouty, a computer science graduate student, is the president of the Graduate Student Association. His role is to be a resource for students if they have any questions or concerns regarding misconduct, as well as being able to “actively facilitate the change that so many people at UMBC have made clear needs to happen,” says Prouty.

Prouty explained that, although he is the president, the GSA contains a senate that is made up of 35 senators from all parts of campus dedicated to hearing graduate students. If students have a concern the senate will, as Prouty describes, “discuss and decide whether or not it’s a big enough issue to handle at the graduate level, or it’s a problem that needs to go to higher authorities.”

Information can also come down from higher officials to the senate, creating a flow of discussion between the two parties. This demonstrates the idea of shared governance, in which student and faculty-based committees collaborate with higher officials to enact change. According to Harvey, this may take longer to implement because “shared governance [contains] people who have non-administrative roles on campus collaborating with the administration.”

Nancy Young, Bobbie L. Hoye and Lisa Akchin are all members of the higher authority officials on campus that are working in collaboration with student organizations in order to enact Retriever Courage to the best of its ability.

“The word courage is really important,” said Young, the Vice President for Student Affairs. “And it’s not just about a website, it also captures the voices that we’ve been listening to … The courage to speak out is what is important.”

Hoye, who is the Title IX Coordinator and Associate General Counsel, added that Retriever Courage has shown a lot of the behind-the-scenes work that is being done on campus at the administrative and individual levels. “We’re having the courage to have the difficult conversations, to listen to where we are not doing our best,” said Hoye.

There is no doubt that there has been a disconnection between campus authorities and students when it comes to talking about issues like sexual misconduct. Akchin elaborated on this, saying that not enough people had enough information on what was going on; however, more conversation has resulted from students and faculty coming forward to express their concerns.

To further bridge the disconnect, Akchin explained, “There are two subcommittees that the University Steering Committee is setting up: a faculty-staff advisory committee and a student advisory committee.” This way, constituents will be given a voice that will reach higher officials. Young additionally described how a consultant will be coming to campus to give advice as to how UMBC can direct its change more effectively for students, faculty and staff alike.

The Vice President of Student Affairs found it important to emphasize that Retriever Courage does not focus on sexual assault alone, but also issues such as gender discrimination and domestic abuse. “We are often talking about things that don’t fall under the category of rape but yet still have [a] significant impact on the way someone can move about campus or the world.”

Young, Hoye and Akchin all hope that this push for change demonstrated throughout the community does not lose its spark. “The hope is that the energy here is sustained, and not just from an administrative standpoint, from an entire community,” said Hoye.

“It’s sad that not enough people knew about these events before September 2018,” said Prouty. As UMBC looks forward, the university is now faced with addressing how higher authority officials and student organizations alike will work together to implement changes in how the campus handles sexual assault cases.
