Common Registration Error Messages

<Tagline>Things to do BEFORE reaching out to your advisor</Tagline>

So,
you've seen your academic advisor and gotten registration advising clearance.
You've picked your classes and put them in your SA "shopping cart."
But when you hit that "enroll" button, you get an error message!

Before you send a
panicked email to your advisor, tap into the troubleshooting skills that you,
as a STEM major, are developing. Begin by:

·
    Reading
the error message carefully. SA will tell you what
    the problem is.

·
    Remembering
that SA is a program. It
does exactly what it has been written to do, and cannot make assumptions. If
you don't have your pre-requisites lined up exactly as they have been defined
for a course, or you're in violation of some sort of rule (like a time
conflict, or exceeding maximum number of credits), SA is not going to allow you
to proceed. This is also true of the way instructors must issue permissions,
and departments build courses in the schedule- details that are overlooked can
make a big impact on registration.

·
    Returning
to the start. Did you remember
to check the "Wait List if class is full" box? Did you need
Departmental Consent? Are you sure that there weren't time conflicts with any
components of your other classes? As course registration heats up and classes
start to fill, sometimes the best way of making sure that you've addressed all
of the possible things that could be contributing to your error message is to
delete a course from your shopping cart and go back through the process of
trying to add it to your schedule from the beginning. Don't think of this as a
failure...even very experienced students (and advisors) have to do this during
    peak registration times.

Some common error
messages, and ways to troubleshoot them:

"Ineligible to
    Register" error message

What to do: Make sure that you are actually eligible
to register - your credit total may be lower than you think! If you have used Degree Audit in SA to
determine your credit total for registration eligibility, you may be trying to
register too early. Degree Audit counts both earned credits and in-progress
credits toward your 120-credit-minimum requirement, but your
registration time is based on earned credits only. The
link below will take you to instructions on how to find the correct information
    in SA.

"Pre-Requisites not
    met" error message

What to do: Look at the published,
electronically-enforced pre-requisites (listed in the "Enrollment
Information" box in a course's description), and make sure that you have
already completed the pre-requisites, or have them in-progress. Transfer students and those with AP/IB
credit should check to make sure that course equivalencies are displaying
correctly in their transfer credit report. If you believe that you are eligible
to take a course, request an override of electronically-enforced pre-requisites
from the instructor listed for the course (in the case of a "Staff"
listing, contact the course's academic department for appropriate point of
contact). DO NOT contact your academic advisor for a pre-requisite override
unless he/she is listed as the course instructor!

"Course is
    closed" error message

What to do: Find another open section of the course,
or add yourself to the Wait List. If you didn't check off the "Wait List if class is
full" box when you put the course into your shopping cart, you may need to
delete the course from your cart, and put it back in, making sure that the box
is checked off this time. Remember that, for multiple-component courses (e.g.,
    CHEM101, PHYS121, BIOL141, MATH151), all of the course
components must be open in order for you to get a seat in the course. If
even one course component is full, you will
be wait listed for the entire class. There is also a cap on the
number of credits that you can be wait listed for (10) - use them wisely!

Do you have a Hold on
    your account?

Holds appear under the Alerts section
    of myUMBC.

Holds can prevent you from things like being
able to register for classes, obtaining a transcript and your diploma.
Depending on the type of hold you have on your, you will need to contact the
appropriate department for specific information regarding your hold.

Student activist groups aim to raise awareness for sexual assault on campus

Sexual assault has been a hot-button issue across campus lately, with an ongoing court case against the University of Maryland, Baltimore County bringing the issue even closer to home. Two student organizations, We Believe You and Speakout to Oppose Predators and Their Protectors, are working to spread awareness, enact change in how sexual assault cases are handled, and minimize (if not eliminate) instances of this crime at the university.

Though there is general agreement that college-aged adults from 18-24 are at an increased vulnerability for sexual assault, statistics for sexual violence crime vary widely; this variation largely depends on the sample population and the exact definition of the misconduct. One commonly repeated figure for Americans is that “one in five women” (as well as one in 71 men) get victimized, drawn from 2010 research by the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That same year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation recorded 85,593 rapes – over a million fewer than cited by the CDC – in part due to the FBI’s disregard for potentially consent-impairing factors (such as alcohol) within its definition of sexual crimes. However, a prevalence of false claims is often used as a scapegoat for number discrepancies, although this is believed to explain only approximately 7 percent of all known cases based on a U.S.-based study through the Making a Difference Project. In fact, an estimated 65 percent (Rennison, 2002) of legitimate cases are believed to go unreported.

This statistic is a primary reason that the groups at UMBC elect to prioritize trust in any alleged victim in order to encourage others to come forward. We Believe You describes itself as “a survivor-centered, student activist organization that aims to end sexual violence on campus,” in a statement recently submitted to The Retriever and published below. Since its founding a year and a half ago, they have put pressure on the school to ensure all students and faculty members undergo sexual assault handling classes and reached out to an external consultant for best-practice next steps. Currently, no members have been reachable for or willing to provide further comment.

Being a group as well as a movement, STOPP has a Facebook page with membership in the hundreds at only a few months old. They are perhaps best-recognized as the organizers of the large protest that took place on campus earlier this semester, and they meet every Friday to plan similar events in reaction to the ongoing allegations of sexual assault cases being mishandled by UMBC.

Exact occurrence rates aside, the effects of random and domestic sexual violence can be severe, with lasting impacts including anything from unwanted pregnancy, to cervical cancer, sexually transmitted infections and perhaps worst of all, post-traumatic stress disorder. Sexual assault can be perpetrated by a friend, a family member, or a partner — in the same vein, anyone could be a survivor of sexual abuse unbeknownst to those he or she knows.

Compassion and respect are paramount in helping survivors of sexual assault; this, as well as justice and increased visibility for victims, is the goal of groups like STOPP and We Believe You. Reform is underway, and conversations are happening.

The following statement was written for The Retriever by We Believe You:

We Believe You is a survivor-centered, student activist organization that aims to end sexual violence on campus. At a little over a year old, we have collaborated with students, staff, and faculty in efforts to make campus safer and keep survivors centered in all conversations about needed changes to our campus. The allegations in the lawsuit against UMBC officials are deeply concerning and we share the multi-faceted and complex emotions that many students, faculty, and staff are feeling right now. These feelings are completely valid and provides even more urgency to why we are working harder than ever to get the change we all deserve. We encourage people in our UMBC community to not lose hope during this time as we put in the work to right wrongs and make UMBC a safer place. Culture change takes time and requires sustainability. We Believe You is dedicated for the long work ahead. We hope we can rely on others to do the same. Our general body meetings are open to all students wishing to make a difference on campus and prioritize survivor support and healing. We invite you to join us as we cultivate this brave space for survivors and allies.

The UMBC administration has guaranteed that everyone attending and working for the university will be required to attend specialized and detailed, in-person training on sexual violence prevention and response. This has been a major goal of our organization since our inception, but change won’t stop there. While we are waiting to hear the recommended changes from the external consultant, we will continue to work on making resources more accessible to everyone, improving police presence and their role on campus, bringing students concerns about the Title IX office to the administration, making sure perpetrators are stopped and held accountable for their actions, and above all, fostering a space where survivors can be heard and helped.

To survivors of sexual violence – especially our UMBC peers: We see you. We hear you. We believe you.

Streaky shooting leads to another Retriever blow-out

After an impressive game against Gettysburg with a 71-56 victory, UMBC looked to start the season 2-0 as they faced off against Eastern University of Pennsylvania. The game got off to a sluggish start as both teams struggled to find a rhythm within their offense. With the score 5-3 Eastern got hit with a technical foul caused by their head coach that allowed the Retrievers to push the score to 6-3. Bodies were flying all over the floor as players were diving for loose balls in hopes of creating a spark for their team. UMBC put their bodies on the line as they had three charging calls go their way which seemed to get the team fired up. After the game, head coach Phil Stern talked about how those charges were important in this win.

“We drew four charges tonight. That’s really important for us, its something that we’re tracking and making sure our players are helping each other out with moving their feet and drawing charges,” Stern explained. The Retrievers would go on a 6-0 run before Eastern scored and leave the score 15-6 at the end of the first. The Retrievers opened up the second quarter on an 11-2 run to open the game up leading the Eagles 26-11. The Retrievers were on fire as they scored 25 points in with 21 of them coming from beyond the arc. Junior-guard Dominika Skrocka contributed three of those seven as she scored all nine of her points in the quarter.

UMBC’s defense smothered Eastern as they continued to trap the ball, making it hard for the opposition to get comfortable. The Retrievers forced back to back turnovers that lead to easy fast breaks, one that saw freshman-guard Paula Rubio drain a wide open three. UMBC outscored the Eagles 26-6 to give themselves a 40-15 lead at the half. Coach Stern applauded his players for their shooting performance, saying, “We did a good job making the extra pass tonight, we have multiple guys that can knock down three’s it’s a really important shot in 2018.” The Retrievers finished the half 9-16 from three and scored 19 points off of turnovers.

The second half went much like the first, with sloppy play from Eastern due to the Retrievers’ stifling defense. The Retrievers began to assert their dominance in the paint, grabbing rebound after rebound that lead to second chance points and a number of and-ones baskets. UMBC controlled the paint as freshman-forward Eryn Fisher went on a run of her own, scoring five straight points from two baskets, including one that drew a foul as she muscled her way inside for two. UMBC went on a 12-0 run in the third that further deflated any possibility of the Eagles getting back in the game. The bench played lights out for the Retrievers as they outscored the Eagles bench 51-19.

By the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Retrievers led by almost 40 points with their largest lead being 42. Freshman-guard Sariah Penese scored her first basket as a Retriever with a three-pointer from the corner. The bench cleared for the Retrievers as every player was able to see some time on the floor. UMBC would win handily as they trounced the Eastern Eagles 81-42. The Retrievers had 13 of their 14 players score with nine of them scoring six or more points. The team would finish with 44 rebounds, 19 assists and 13 made three-pointers. Stern has already put this game behind him in preparation for their two away games this weekend, adding, “It’s all about weight. We’re gonna need everybody to win these two games this weekend. We’ll get on the bus, have practice, have a nice dinner and try to win two games.” The lady Retrievers will be tested as they head to New Jersey for the Seton Hall Classic where they will face Kennesaw St. and University of Texas San Antonio.
