STEM focused talks during homecoming event
There are many homecoming events happening this weekend, the GRIT-X Talks being one of them. This is an opportunity from people across UMBC to share their stories. I wanted to highlight two of them which are more focused in the STEM disciplines. They will be happening in PAHB Dance Cube. Manil Suri – Distinguished University Professor, Mathematics & Statistics
STEAMy Videos and X’y Tales – Approaching Math through Narrative
Teaching mathematics seems to have little to do with telling stories, but what if the two were combined? Could introducing narrative into mathematics instruction improve educational outcomes? Mathematician and bestselling novelist Manil Suri explores this question in a pilot math class aimed at non-STEM students. The research is being conducted by using excerpts and videos based on “The Godfather of Numbers,” a novel-in-progress which aims to show how the entire universe can be built up from math. This approach is an example of STEAM, an educational movement in which the Arts are used to motivate STEM subjects.

Robotic Journeys – A Quest for Independence
The modern era has seen an increase in the use of robotics and assistive technologies, which open the doors of accessibility to people with disabilities and seniors. By developing abilities and problem-solving skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) elds, we can tackle challenges in healthcare through innovation and technological advancement to bene t society today and impact future generations. Presenting via the Beam telepresence robot, Kavita Krishnaswamy shares her personal and professional experiences – from her dissertation research to overcoming challenges with the power of assistive technologies, arti cial intelligence, and robotics to achieve independence.

Time Reporting Procedures for Campus Openings and Closures
There are occasions when the UMBC campus is required to unexpectedly open late, close early or close for an entire day which may result in employees being eligible for Administrative Leave. Attached is a document outlining the time reporting guidelines and procedures for using and recording Administrative Leave.

On Friday, October 12, 2018, a campus alert was distributed informing the campus community of a delayed opening due to water outage. The Department of Human Resources would like to remind employees of the guidelines and procedures surrounding the eligibility of Administrative Leave (ADM) for proper time recording as it relates to campus closures and delayed openings.
Attached is a document specifying the guidelines for the various campus schedule scenarios. Please share this information with your departmental employees to ensure proper time reporting. Thank you.

Our Spaces will be Closed October 12, 2018 - Water Outage
The Mosaic, Interfaith Center and the QSL
Due to the water outage on campus today, Campus Life's Mosaic, Interfaith Center, and Queer Student Lounge will be closed.
We will reopen on Monday, Oct. 15th for our regularly scheduled hours.

Thirty years ago, on the anniversary of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) first observed National Coming Out Day as a reminder that one of our most basic tools is the power of coming out. One out of every two Americans has someone close to them who identifies gay or lesbian. For transgender people, that number is only one in ten.
Coming out - whether it is as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning - STILL MATTERS. When people know someone who is LGBTQ, they are far more likely to support equality under the law. Beyond that, our stories can be powerful to each other. (Adapted from the Human Rights Campaign, 2018).
