Intern of the Week: Zack DeThomasis for Media & Com. Studies

<Tagline>Check out his position with Greenfield Partners, Inc!</Tagline>

Name:Zack DeThomasis

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Greenfield Partners, Inc.

Position Title:Social Media Operations Coordinator

Major(s)/Minor(s):Media and Communications Studies

Work Term:Summer 2018

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I worked for a small, private IT staffing and recruiting company called Greenfield Partners, Inc located in Irvine, California.. My responsibilities included establishing the social media pages, connecting the content through all of the platforms to ensure that there was transparency across all pages. Additionally, I was able to learn the day-to-day operations of a small business and what it takes to establish and maintain it. I was able to sit in on phone calls and interviews between employers and potential candidates.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

My mentor was a personal connection and because he works within the staffing industry, he has many connections to various companies. Over the Winter break into the Spring semester of this past year is when I started looking and applying to different internship positions for this Summer. It wasn't until midway through the Spring semester that everything was then set. I had asked him if he had any knowledge of any companies looking to hire interns in any marketing positions. Upon this, he then countered and asked me if I would like to work with him to get his company's social media pages started and functioning.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

It allowed me to be creative and rely on my own knowledge of social media. Additionally, I did a lot of research to see how other companies started and use their social media pages so that I could create something similar for Greenfield Partners, Inc. it was also very challenging because Greenfield isn't a company that produces material goods, but rather it is a service that companies can use to come into contact with potential job candidates. The group at Greenfield really acts as more of the "in-between" for companies to candidates. Being a former athlete at UMBC, I have really only been familiar to things that were sports related. This internship was the first thing that I had done that wasn't sports related so I enjoyed that it was something new to me and maybe out of my comfort zone.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I was able to help out a personal connection with getting his business established on social media fronts. Social Media is a prominent platform for companies in our current time, so to help someone out meant a lot.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

There is always a market for hiring interns. Unfortunately, that's what makes getting an internship position so competitive. Before I got my internship at Greenfield Partners, I had applied to 4 different companies for their internship positions and had gotten denied to all 4 of them. It really did force me to look back at my network and connections and then take it upon myself to reach out. Additionally, teamwork is KEY. Being able to communicate with your coworkers on ideas is a necessity. Like I said, there is always a market for interns and make sure to check base with any of your personal connections.

I am writing to make you aware of an upcoming
conference – “The New China Challenge” – being held in Annapolis,
MD at the U.S. Naval Academy on 10 October. We invite you, your
students, and fellow faculty to attend. As China has risen in power
and prominence, it has emerged as a true competitor to America. Is
war between the two nations inevitable? If conflict were to occur,
what would it look like? Guided by its state capitalism, China’s
challenge goes beyond the military domain. How should the
United States respond to the emerging revisionist power in the
Indo-Pacific? These questions and more will be addressed by an
    incredible line-up of speakers.

The Mandarin speaking former Prime Minister
and Foreign Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, will give the
morning keynote on “Understanding China’s Rise.”

The morning panel will explore the question,
“Are the U.S. and China Destined for War?”, and will feature
Harvard Professor Graham Allison, Ph.D., author,
    Destined for War: Can
America and China Escape Thucydides Trap?; Dr. Kathleen
Hicks, Senior Vice President at CSIS, ADM Scott Swift, USN
(Ret.), former Pacific Fleet Commander (2015-2018); and ADM
Robert Willard, USN (Ret.), former Commander of Pacific Command
    (2009-2012).

    August Cole,
coauthor of GHOST FLEET: A NOVEL OF THE NEXT WORLD WAR, will
discuss how fiction can be used to understand what a future
conflict with China might look like. Complimentary lunch will be
    provided for all attendees.

    The afternoon panel,
“U.S. vs. China: The Great Power Competition,”moves
beyond the problem of potential conflict and considers the complex
and competitive dynamics in the U.S.-China relationship.
Leading experts will explore the new China challenge in the
    political, strategic, and economic domains.

Authors August Cole, Dr. Graham Allison, and
Dr. James Holmes will be signing copies of their books during the
    conference from 12:50 – 1:30 p.m.

Register, view the full conference schedule,
    and find additional information online.
Registration is free and open to the public. Please share with

Meet the team changing how people think about waste

<Tagline>Porta-NERDs: EPA-supported research</Tagline>

October 2, 2018 by Megan Hanks

UMBC’s Lee Blaney is
known for his innovative research on water and soil contamination,
working to keep people and the environment healthy. His latest project
takes that focus in a new direction by developing an innovative system
to recover nutrients from an unexpected source: human urine.

Blaney, associate professor of
chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering, received a phase
one grant from the Environmental Protection Agency’s People, Prosperity,
and the Planet (P3) program to investigate the ability of his Nutrient
Extraction and Recovery Device (NERD) technology to recover nutrients
    from human urine.

This project will advance knowledge about how sustainable resource recovery technologies can be implemented. “Human
urine accounts for the majority of nutrients in municipal wastewater,
but only a small fraction of the flow,” explains Blaney. “When urine
gets diluted into the wastewater system, it makes it more difficult to
treat and recover these nutrients. So, we wanted to go to the source —
    toilets.”

Blaney worked with co-PI Marc Zupan, associate
professor of mechanical engineering, and ten UMBC students to develop a
system that can recover around 90% of the phosphorus, an ecologically
important nutrient, and some of the nitrogen and potassium from
collected urine samples. These nutrients can
impair water quality by causing the formation of dead zones in places
like the Chesapeake Bay and Gulf of Mexico, so developing a low-cost way
of removing them from urine could have a major impact.

Once removed, those nutrients can then be used in ways that are
beneficial rather than harmful to human and environmental health. “The
recovered nutrients can be used as a fertilizer,” says Blaney. “By
‘recycling’ these nutrients, we also avoid the economical and energy
costs associated with traditional fertilizers. It’s a win-win for the
    environment and our wallets.”

All P3 projects are required to include an educational component, to
ensure researchers are sharing knowledge about the environment and
sustainability. The student role in this particular project is
    significant.

Both undergraduate and graduate students have worked to develop and
institute the NERD technology, which modified portable toilets to
collect and process urine samples. In April, several students presented
their work at the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington,
    D.C.

    Students

“I would say the biggest impact our
work had at the USA Science and Engineering Festival was getting people
to think differently about ‘waste’ by raising their awareness of
    nutrient recovery,” says Josh Benoit
‘18, chemical engineering. “Most people had never heard of the term
‘nutrient recovery’ and once they learned about it were excited about
the potential of the Porta-NERDS system.”

Charles Portner ‘18, chemical
engineering, who worked with Blaney and Benoit, says that presenting
their work in Washington D.C. allowed the group to explain the
simplicity of the technology and how it can be implemented easily.
“Folks could potentially have fixtures operating on this technology
installed in their private homes or schools without having to wait for
municipal adoption,” Porter says, explaining that the system could
decrease the burden on municipal treatment systems and empower “average
folks who wanted to do their part.”

In the future, Utsav Shashvatt Ph.D ‘19, environmental engineering, hopes this work will impact communities globally. “I
am excited about the potential of bringing these cost-effective
portable nutrient recovery technologies to communities around the
    world.”

And, as Sophia Lopresti ’18, global studies, states “There
are so many ways that human waste disposal affects our environment and
our future health, yet urine continues to be a ‘taboo’ topic, but not to
those who stopped at our table.”

NSF recently produced a video about research being done in Blaney’s lab. The full video can be viewed on the NSF website.
