New Article in Nature Comm. by Phys/Chem Collaboration

“Strong coupling and induced transparency at room temperature with single quantum dots and gap plasmons.”

Physics graduate student Haixu Leng and his advisor Matthew Pelton, together with their collaborators in the UMBC Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, have published an article in Nature Communications on coupling between plasmons and single quantum dots. Previous experiments have probed strong coupling between plasmons and individual emitters, but the signatures of strong and intermediate coupling can be confused based on the scattering measurements that have been made before. Here, the authors use both scattering and photoluminescence to unambiguously demonstrate and distinguish between weak, intermediate, and strong coupling between single quantum dots and plasmons at room temperature.

Nature Communications, Volume 9, Article number 4012 (2018)

Abstract: Coherent coupling between plasmons and transition dipole moments in emitters can lead to two distinct spectral effects: vacuum Rabi splitting at strong coupling strengths, and induced transparency (also known as Fano interference) at intermediate coupling strengths. Achieving either strong or intermediate coupling between a single emitter and a localized plasmon resonance has the potential to enable single-photon nonlinearities and other extreme light–matter interactions, at room temperature and on the nanometer scale. Both effects produce two peaks in the spectrum of scattering from the plasmon resonance, and can thus be confused if scattering measurements alone are performed. Here we report measurements of scattering and photoluminescence from individual coupled plasmon–emitter systems that consist of a single colloidal quantum dot in the gap between a gold nanoparticle and a silver film. The measurements unambiguously demonstrate weak coupling (the Purcell effect), intermediate coupling (Fano interference), and strong coupling (Rabi splitting) at room temperature.

E-signatures, Digital Workflow Improve UMBC Business Process

<Tagline>Human Resources One of Many Departments Now Using DocuSign</Tagline>

An
important, yet often overlooked, business practice is to break down and analyze
each step of a given process to look for redundancies, bottlenecks, and
particularly inefficient or slow procedures in order to improve them, put them
back together, and create a more productive system. This practice requires
active participation from all parties involved in the workflow as well as
strong documentation and attention to detail, as most business processes
include a mix of formal and informal procedures that may not adapt well to
    change.

It
is no surprise then that the practice of improving workflow efficiency
frequently defers to more urgent, high priority tasks. The Department of Human Resources
(HR) here at UMBC has dedicated a great deal of effort to improving many
aspects of their workflow as they convert to fully electronic forms. To do so,
HR implemented the digital signature platform DocuSign.

Not
so long ago, all forms came as paper documents that had to be signed in pen and
submitted either in person or by mail. Only in the past few years have we
enjoyed the relative convenience of uploading forms as Word Docs and PDFs. Even
though the ESIGN Act was passed in 2000, businesses have been slow to adopt
electronic signatures as standard procedure. As technology has advanced and the
nuances of their legality and security have been resolved, electronic
signatures are quickly becoming more ubiquitous. Now, most of the world’s
largest technological, pharmaceutical, and financial companies are seeing
significant improvements in efficiency and productivity while simultaneously
reducing their impact on the environment by using electronic signatures.

However,
one difficulty in adopting electronic signature technology is that the system
needs to be explicitly taught every detail possible of the workflow in order to
automate it. Though the task may seem mundane at first, it actually forces one
to step back and reflect on how and why each step of the process in question
takes place. This creates the opportunity to alter and enhance the old ways in
order to maximize efficiency in the new system. HR is doing just that. From
editing the wording of certain documents to altering the sequence of approvers,
HR staff has left no stone unturned as they seek to improve the signing
experience for both staff and students.

Starting
out, the leadership team in Human Resources met to determine which forms would
be converted to Docusign and then prioritized each of these forms. Focusing
primarily on forms that are time sensitive and those dealt with in high
volumes, they made sure to set up regular meetings with all of the
stakeholders, including IT developers, department representatives, and subject
experts. Director of Payroll Lisa Drouillard, who has been a key player
in bringing DocuSign to HR, says, “The thing that has been most successful to
facilitate the transition for electronic forms has been to devote time each
week to focus on the project and keep the momentum going.”

“It
is also important to make sure the right people are included, which often
includes DoIT, the functional experts, and campus stakeholders to not only
review the existing form process but also the business processes leading into
and out of the form to ensure we are improving as much of the process as
possible,” Drouillard adds. Ensuring that everyone is kept in the loop as forms
are changed, previewed, piloted, and tested gives control to the right people
so they can achieve an ideal solution.

HR
continues to work on converting and testing forms, and looks forward to rolling
out their Docusign forms beginning in the Fall. Though it is going to
take time to roll-out, HR is committed to creating a more efficient online
process for not only the HR Department, but also the various stakeholders
including the department’s administrative staff and our employee population.

Stay
tuned for more success stories as we unveil how other UMBC departments are
    converting to electronic forms.

"They have both constantly pushed me to be the most successful researcher than I can be," Adursh says, "by encouraging me to ask valuable questions and and having fun while I perform this research, as well as offering an invaluable amount of advice at every stage of the data analysis process and encouraging me to present my findings!"

Adursh plans to present his research at the next Meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle in January 2019. He'll also be presenting at UMBC's Undergraduate Research and Achievement Day (URCAD) in April.

The Overview on Interviews

<Tagline>Get your foot in the door and impress potential employers!</Tagline>

Hopefully, you all had a good time at the Career Fair last Wednesday. At this point, the companies you talked to are beginning to look over resumes and decide who they want to advance to the next round in the hiring process, also known as interviews!

Before we dive into the strategies you can use to impress during the interview, there are a few basics that need to be covered first. Dress professionally. Wear at least business casual, but you might want to step it up a notch to business attire. Bring an extra copy of your resume, a pen and paper, and a bottle of water. Map out your drive (if you have to drive) the day before and account for traffic when deciding when you should leave. If your interview is on campus, make sure you know the building and room number.

During the interview, try and maintain an air of professionalism while developing a relationship with the interviewer. It's a tough line to walk, but resources linked below can help you practice and find that balance. Think of the type of interview as well, phone interviews and technical interviews are very different. When answering a question, keeping the acronym S.T.A.R. in mind is incredibly helpful. Stories that describe the Situation you were in, the Task you had to complete, the Action you took and the Result of that action communicate efficiently and clearly to the interviewer the message you are trying to get across.

At the end of the interview, you’ll get the chance to ask the interviewer questions about the company. I don’t know about you, but when asked to ask questions, every single question I’ve ever had immediately vacates my brain and I can’t figure out anything to say. So it's good to go in with a plan. Do research on the company beforehand and develop a list of questions to ask. They can be industry-specific or more general, like “How does the area I would be working in fit into the overall organizational structure?”. Finally, after the interview, send a thank you note to follow up. Thank the interviewer for their time and the opportunity, and reiterate how you hope to hear from them soon.

So, we’ve gone over everything you need to do, but how can the Career Center help you? We offer mock (practice) interview appointments you can schedule through UMBCworks. You’ll come in and interview with a career specialist, then they’ll give you feedback on your performance. We also offer a new online service called Big Interview. You can search through a database of questions, record yourself answering them, and send them to the Career Center for review. To get questions reviewed, simply send the recording through Big Interview to our email: interviews@umbc.edu.

Interviewing can be a scary thing, but with the tips laid out above, hopefully it’s a little less so. Make sure to keep an eye out for more employer events coming to campus soon, we always have fun things going on. See you next week, where we’ll talk about finding internships and full- time positions using more Career Center tools.
