Dr. James DeVita, AVP, Academic Partnerships and High-Impact Experiences, to Facilitate Discussion with Alumni from UMBC’s Community Leadership Program

<Tagline>Part of Homecoming 2025</Tagline>

Dr. James DeVita, associate vice president for academic partnerships and high-impact experiences in the Division of Student Affairs, will speak with alumni from UMBC’s Community Leadership program at Homecoming on Saturday, October 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the The Commons Sports Zone (new location). This Community Leadership Gathering, open to all, is a free, ticketed event.

Dr. DeVita is the newest faculty member in the Community Leadership program, which prepares aspiring and practicing leaders with the skills and experience needed to generate transformative social change. His conversation with alumni will focus on leadership skills and career readiness. It will be a facilitated conversation that engages attendees, includes opportunities for audience questions, and encourages reflection and dialogue.

“The Community Leadership program is not only interdisciplinary, bringing together students from all types of disciplinary backgrounds, it's also interprofessional, bringing together individuals who work in a wide range of fields,” said Dr. DeVita. “This makes for a rich learning experience for both students and instructors that is helping me to learn more about our community(-ies) in Baltimore while also getting to support student engagement and learning. I'm also inspired by the opportunity to co-teach with Dr. Sally Scott, graduate program director, and curious about the impact of our collaborative approach on students' learning – something we might explore during our discussion at Homecoming, among other topics.”

Reminder: Join us at 1pm today for Assessment 365!

Today is our first Assessment 365 event for 2025-2026!

Join us for this month's Assessment 365 presentation as we
dive into a Summer 2025 Orientation Data Project, led by Orientation Peer
Ambassador and student researcher Pontchelaut Kerby Baldomer '27. With input
from more than 2,000 new Retrievers, this project explores how incoming
students define the community they hope to join—and the one they intend to
build together. From themes of being supportive, welcoming, friendly, and
accepting, the findings highlight the powerful role orientation and ongoing
programming play in shaping belonging and well-being at UMBC.
This session will not only unpack key results and their
implications for our divisional work, but also spotlight the value of
conducting research with students as partners. Dr. Ricky Blissett '11
and Dr. Mary Ellen Wade will discuss considerations and recommendations for how
to involve students in assisting with assessment and research projects.

Finally, learn more about the process for sharing your
research or assessment work at a future Assessment 365 event!

Assessment 365 is from 1-2pm today on Webex at https://umbc.webex.com/meet/mewade
