Conclusion of Voicemail and call processing outage

Earlier today we completed the repairs to the voicemail and call processing equipment. At this point call processing services have been restored and voicemail is again accessible and accepting new messages.

Despite our best efforts there was some data that could not be recovered. For voicemail boxes this could result in an existing message being lost. For call processing numbers it would result in a loss of the prerecorded message or greeting. Unfortunately due to the age and limited diagnostic abilities of the system we cannot tell which numbers have lost messages.

We would encourage managers of call processing numbers to check their recordings and submit a ticket through DoIT’s Technology Support Center at (410) 455-3838 or https://my.umbc.edu/help. We will be monitoring tickets and working with users promptly to record new greetings.

We appreciate the patience and understanding the campus has shown during this extended outage. DoIT will be evaluating options to modernize this system and to improve the stability of this service. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact either myself or Damian Doyle, our information is listed below.

Voicemail Maintenance continuing Friday 8/17 starting at 8am

Fall 2018 Featured Course - BTEC 300

<Tagline>Legal, Ethical, Regulatory & Biosafety Issues</Tagline>

The new Translational Life Science Technology program - offered exclusively at UMBC's Shady Grove campus - would like to announce an opportunity for UMBC Main Campus students to take the program's introductory course, Biotechnology Survey: Legal, Ethical, Regulatory & Biosafety Issues (BTEC 300) in Fall 2018, without the need to commute to the Shady Grove campus!

About the course itself:

BTEC 300 is designed to raise the student's awareness on a range of non-technical topics that frame the field of translational medicine and the biotechnology industry. Weekly meetings will cover topics ranging from legal decisions that affect what products can be patented by the biotechnology industry, to regulatory trends in the US and abroad, to the ethics of genomic mining and manipulation, and synthetic life.

    Course Pre-requisites: Grades of C or better in BIOL142, BIOL302, CHEM101, and PHYS111

About the course offering:

Section 02 of BTEC 300 will be offered as a streamed course on Main Campus in Fall 2018, meaning that Main Campus students will attend class at the same time as the Shady Grove campus students (who will enroll in section 01), participating via live-stream feed from the Shady Grove course's classroom to a classroom on Main Campus (location TBD, check the Schedule of Classes for updates).

Life Sciences majors: Please be aware that BTEC 300 is NOT currently approved as an elective that will meet major requirements for any of the majors offered by the Biological Sciences Department or the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. However, for students who are considering a career in Translational Science or Biotechnology, or who may want to learn more about the TLST degree at Shady Grove, BTEC 300 may be an excellent general (upper-level!) elective to explore that interest further!
