16th PROMISE Summer Success Institute: August 18, 2018 #ThinkBigDiversity

{IMAGE – FEATURED}

In 2003, “SUCCESS 2003” (later named the PROMISE Summer Success Institute or “SSI”) brought together graduate students in STEM from underrepresented groups in Maryland for a conference and series of workshops with the goal of building a community of scholars who would finish graduate degrees and go on to be professors and leaders in their respective fields.

We started with three schools: UMBC, the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP), and the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB). Now, in 2017, PROMISE is led by these primary partners, and operates under the imprimatur of the University System of Maryland (USM: 12 institutions, 2 regional centers), and has partnered with the Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA) to include students from their 15 member and affiliate institutions) to serve graduate students throughout the state of Maryland. PROMISE alumni are tenured professors, department chairs, NSF and NIH grantees, and leaders in government, corporate, and non-profit sectors. Our alumni are now sending their students to PROMISE, and PROMISE is pleased to be connected to the AGEP community at-large.

FY19 UMBC Bookstore Department Charge Authorization Sheet

It is the end of another
fiscal year. The current Bookstore authorization sheets will expire at the end
of June. Please submit a form for the
new fiscal year by the first week of July.

Please fill out the UMBC
Bookstore Department Charge Authorization Sheet found on our webpage (http://bookstore.umbc.edu/SiteText.aspx?id=22144)
to establish an account for the new fiscal year. On the authorization sheets,
please write authorized individual chart strings in their entirety (fund, prog
fin, dept, project, activity ID, resource type and analysis type). Limit one chart string per PS chart string
line. Remember to have appropriate individuals sign the space provided.
When you have completed your sheet(s), please return them to the Bookstore.

Any deletions or additions to
the sheet over the course of the fiscal year must be sent in writing. Phone authorizations are not accepted.
On all grant accounts, the Principal Investigator and Department Chair must
sign the UMBC Bookstore Department Charge Authorization Sheet.

Also, please inform your
department that they should know the chart string they would like to use for
their purchase upon entering the Bookstore, as many departments have multiple
    chart strings.

One Time Authorization forms
can also be found on our webpage, for occasions when someone other than the
authorized individual needs to make a purchase. Remember, someone authorized
must sign the form to make it effective.

As a reminder, the UMBC
Bookstore staff is required to ask for a picture ID when faculty and staff are
signing for department charges. This is a state mandated auditing procedure
utilized to protect the UMBC community and to prevent illegal use of
departmental accounts. It is mandatory that members of your department show
    their ID when making purchases.

Please return this to the Bookstore as soon as

UMBC students study abroad as Boren and Gilman Scholars

This article, written by Megan Hanks, was originally posted here.

Three UMBC students have been selected to receive prestigious Boren and Gilman scholarships to study abroad this summer. The programs provide recipients with financial support to pursue international travel and immerse themselves in a new culture and language, with an eye toward their future careers.

“We know from research that studying abroad is among the most positive and impactful experiences a student can undertake while in college. Learning to function in an unfamiliar environment, developing an understanding of another culture, and acquiring proficiency in a foreign language all contribute greatly toward academic and career development,” says David Di Maria, associate vice provost for international education.

    Dr. David Di Maria.

The Boren Scholarship, a National Security Education Program initiative, provides students with unique opportunities to study languages that are important to national security, but are not commonly taught in schools. Boren Scholars commit to federal government jobs related to national security for at least one year after graduating.

This year, Cody Thomas ‘18, chemical engineering, and modern languages, linguistics and intercultural communication, received the Boren Scholarship for International Study. He will travel to Kazakhstan to study the Russian language at Nazarbayev University, through a program hosted by the University of Arizona.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship provides funding to support students studying or completing internships abroad during summer- or semester-long programs, with the goal of “internationalizing their outlook and better preparing them to thrive in the global economy.” The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education support the Gilman Scholarship.

Sungheum Jo ‘19, biology, and Danielle White ‘19, chemical engineering, are two of about 1,200 students from across the United States who will participate in the Gilman Scholarship Program. Jo will study in Barcelona as part of UMBC’s faculty-led program in Spain, and White will be a participant in UMBC’s faculty-led program in Barranquilla, Colombia.

“The prestigious Boren and Gilman scholarships provide talented students with generous financial awards and unique pathways to rewarding careers with the federal government,” says Di Maria. “We are very proud of this year’s recipients and look forward to following their continued achievements.”

This year’s awards continue UMBC’s strong tradition of connecting students with international learning opportunities through competitive scholarship programs. During the 2016 – 17 year, UMBC was one of the top institutions of its size in number of Gilman Scholarships awarded. Barellie Thompson ‘17, sociology, traveled to Ghana; Danielle McGrogan ‘17, global studies, traveled to Rwanda; Emily Parks ‘18, English, traveled to India; Selam Kubrom ‘18, global studies, traveled to Costa Rica; and William Early ‘19, information systems, traveled to Japan.
