What does the Administrator of the Executive Council Do?

<Tagline>Apply today for a leadership position with SGA!</Tagline>

We're hoping to answer some of your questions about the changes to the SGA Executive Branch through a series of myUMBC posts. Don't forget to apply at sga.umbc.edu/apply by Friday, August 17th at 5pm!

What does the Administrator of the Executive Council do?

The Administrator will take notes/minutes at the Executive Council meetings, coordinate the calendars of the members of the Executive Council, and coordinates with the Secretaries of Senate and Finance Board to ensure cohesive record-keeping across SGA.

What is the time commitment for the Administrator of Executive Council?

The Administrator of the Executive Council is required to attend council meetings, which will take place every other Wednesday during free hour. Outside of meetings, the expectation for the Administrator is 3 - 7 hours per week of SGA-related work. Note that some weeks may be more involved than others. Your SGA work should not get in the way of self-care time and studying for your classes - you come first!

What do you get in return as the Administrator of the Executive Council?

This is the perfect opportunity to make your mark on the UMBC community, and work with students, faculty, staff, and administrators to make meaningful change for years to come. Your work will be essential to maintaining organization within SGA, which will make us a more effective and efficient organization! The Administrator of the Executive Council is also paid an annual stipend.

What happened to SGA Departments or Units?

It's all about collaboration. In our experience, titles like "Unit Coordinator of <<insert specific category here>> create labels and are barriers for collaboration. Our interest is getting initiatives and projects done - not assigning titles. The way we look at the Executive Branch is to have structure, but not so much that it becomes restrictive.

How do I apply to be the Administrator of the Executive Council, or any other positions in SGA?

Easy! Go to sga.umbc.edu/apply and click on the position you are interested in applying for. Applications are due on Friday, August 17th at 5pm.

New global ranking lists UMBC in the top 3.5 percent of universities worldwide

CWUR currently uses seven indicators to assess universities, including quality of education (alumni who have won major international awards), alumni employment (as CEOs of top companies worldwide), quality of faculty (faculty who have won major international awards), total research output, publications in top-tier journals, publications in highly influential journals, and research citations. Metrics relating to research now account for 70 percent of each university’s total score. UMBC performed particularly well in the area of publishing research in highly influential journals.

“I am pleased that this new ranking of UMBC recognizes the growing national and international reputation of our interdisciplinary research initiatives, which focus on cybersecurity, cognitive analytics, environmental sciences and life sciences, balanced by impactful scholarship in public policy and public humanities,” says Karl V. Steiner, vice president for research.

U.S. institutions are well-represented in the 2018 – 19 ranking, taking 16 of the top 20 spots. Also highly ranked are universities in the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, France, Denmark, Germany, and Sweden.

In addition to the CWUR, UMBC has recently been listed as a Forbes Best Value College and Business First top public university.
