Welcome to Summer STEM 2018
Hello, Summer STEM students!

You've received this message because you are enrolled in a summer class that is part of UMBC's Summer STEM initiative. Summer is a great time to focus on required courses STEM majors need to graduate on time. This summer you will have the unique opportunity to participate in events and activities that give you a break from studying as well as connect you to the greater UMBC community. 

Join us for a new series of talks and discussions ranging from how to transition from university into the workforce to how to balance family pressure while pursuing a degree in STEM (free lunch). We are also partnering with the UMBC Observatory and SEB for multiple fun and educational events. More information will become available soon.

Also, don’t forget that UMBC offers extensive summer academic support to help you academically outside of the classroom. Take advantage of the Learning Resources Center’s one-on-one tutoring, supplemental instruction, writing help, and student-led study groups.

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

We are deeply saddened by the devastation that recent flash flooding has caused in our community—in Catonsville, Arbutus, Ellicott City, and other areas across Baltimore County, Howard County, and Baltimore City. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of National Guard Sgt. Eddison Hermond, who lost his life in the flooding, and all who have suffered losses.
 
Many members of our university community live, work, and frequent businesses in the affected areas. UMBC is committed to supporting the local community through recovery efforts, sharing knowledge and resources to help with cleanup and, we hope, to reduce future flood risk.
 
Residents who are seeking support or would like to offer support to others can visitHoward County and Baltimore County government websites. Also, the Howard County Community Relief Fund, Ellicott City Partnership, and American Red Cross Greater Chesapeake Region are currently accepting donations.
 
Tragedies impact community members in different ways. Please remember that support resources are available, both through UMBC and beyond:

Important Changes to the Format of the Justification Memo

Historically, hiring departments included demographic information (race and gender) of the interviewed applicants in the body of the justification memo.   Prior to PageUp implementation, this was the only method of reporting this EEO data to Human Resources.

Now that PageUp confidentially gathers all necessary EEO demographic data on applicants, it is no longer required that this information be included in the justification memo.   We ask that you Do Not include the information in the memo as the data may not match the self -reported data supplied by the applicant. 

Please pass this information to any hiring managers in your department. 

The sample justification memos have been updated on the Human Resources website for your reference.

College JUMP is a near-peer, college preparation mentoring program for 11th and 12th-grade refugee youth in the Baltimore area. College JUMP strives to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to gain admission and feel prepared for success in postsecondary institutions. 

This position offers a $300 per semester stipend

Refugee Youth Project's College JUMP is looking for motivated students to join their leadership team for the 2018-2019 academic year. 


College JUMP is a near-peer, college preparation mentoring program for 11th and 12th-grade refugee youth in the Baltimore area. College JUMP strives to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to gain admission and feel prepared for success in postsecondary institutions. 

This position offers a $300 per semester stipend
