]]>The applications for the M.O.D.E.L M.E mentoring program are now live for the 2025-2026 school year! This mentoring program is open to all mechanical engineering students at UMBC and offers a great opportunity to connect with peers and learn more about the tools and resources that can help you succeed in your academic and future career as an engineer.
Why be a mentor?
As a mentor, you can help new students navigate their first experiences at UMBC and offer valuable insights into what's to come. By building connections between upperclassmen and newer students, we can foster growth and diversity within our community. Mentoring others can also help build your resume and leadership skills.
Mentor Responsibilities:
- Attend the meet-up event to meet your mentee
- Periodically meet with your mentee to check in and offer advice
- Keep in contact with your mentee and answer their questions
Why be a mentee?
As a mentee, you will receive advice and valuable knowledge from your mentor. They can answer questions about classes, resumes, or anything else you want to learn more about to improve your college experience. You and your mentor can decide whether to meet in person or connect online.
There will be a group meet-up event where mentors will get to meet their mentees, as well as periodic group meetings throughout the school year for everyone to take a mental break and have fun with games and food.
Students of all academic years are eligible to become a mentee, while the mentor positions are only open to juniors, seniors, and super-seniors.
Remember: you get out what you put in!
How to Apply:
The deadline to apply to be either a mentor or mentee is October 20th, 2025. To apply, please fill out the appropriate application form:

A primary goal is to uncover what prompts the mode switch. “How does it decide when to switch? And the hypothesis that we’re considering is that it’s based on some internal measure of uncertainty in the fish, meaning that if the fish isn’t sure if it’s inside the tube, it’s going to move so it can gather sensory information,” Hoffman says.
To test this, the team integrates several methods. At the University of Minnesota, engineers led by Andrew Lamperski will apply machine learning to map relationships between sensory inputs and behavioral outputs in the form of mathematical functions. Hoffman handles data analysis, starting with manual pattern-spotting before coding.

Interested in forming a study group for your STEM classes but not sure how to ask strangers? We've got you covered!
Next week in The Learning Collaboratory – TLC (UC115) from 1-4PM, we'll be holding Study Group Socials. Come in any time we're open (schedule posted below) and meet others in your class, grab a snack, and sign up for a study group!
We're hoping lots of you come around the same time (hint: after your class), but no matter what time of day you come, we'll make sure you get a chance to sign up. You'll get a form to fill out where you can let us know when you're available to study on campus and we'll take care of the group formation for you!
You can, of course, study anywhere, but we will specifically be helping you form groups to study in TLC during open study hall hours. You'll always have access to whiteboards, calculators, and, most importantly, SNACKS! There will be practice materials for you during test weeks, suggestions for what to cover that week, and more. **These will be unmonitored sessions and tutoring/instructions will not be provided. If you are looking for that support – and we hope you are – please follow this link to the tutoring and SI PASS support that our colleagues in the Academic Success Center (ASC) provide.**
If possible, please come by on the day listed for your STEM subject, but you can stop by to fill out the form any time. If there are enough people interested in group study, we'll put you together!
