This fall, the Center for Social Justice Dialogue is hosting Interact, a series designed to help participants hone the skills to successfully engage in dialogue across difference. If you are a student within WILL+, ILE, any other Living-Learning Communities (LLC) or are just an undergraduate student interested in upscaling your dialogue, register now!

WHAT IS INTERACT?

Interact is a four-week program for undergraduate students focused on creating an introduction to the dialogue skills required to engage in difficult conversations, dialogue across difference, and intercultural dialogue.

The goal of Interact at UMBC is to develop foundational dialogue skills such as critical self-awareness, listening and sharing authentically, asking questions toward creating deep connections, and apologizing and adjusting appropriately, while creating opportunities for participants to become more self-aware. As a result of participation in Interact, participants will have the skills to engage in dialogue within any type of situation and any topic of conversation.

Participants meet weekly in small groups for 90-minute sessions that are co-facilitated by 2-3 facilitators. Each small group consists of 10-15 participants. During these sessions, participants learn and practice the necessary skills to become inclusive leaders and engaged community members.

Participants who attend at least three of the four sessions will be entered into a raffle to win prizes such as a PORTABLE PROJECTOR and WEIGHTED BLANKET!

To register, click this link!

More about Culture Building at UMBC

Culture building is the intentional process of developing and nurturing a set of shared values, beliefs, and practices within an organization or community. Culture builders are actors who intentionally seek to foster a positive and productive environment.

Especially during times of deep societal polarization and loss of shared humanity, an inclusive and equitable culture benefits and requires everyone; we all have a role to play in building the culture we want to see.

The Culture Builders series will host a keynote and set of community conversations each semester focused on connecting community and culture across difference. The series is designed to engage topics and ideas grounded in shared community values, beliefs, and practices that pull us closer to a more loving and just campus. Join us for engaging lectures and community dialogues.

As the team is ramping things up as we move into the meat of fall semester, I wanted to let you all know about a few returning opportunities.

    Windows and Linux Workshops
Returning this semester, our Windows- and Linux-specific meetings will focus on a variety of active cyber defense-focused topics, including system administration basics, forensics, threat hunting, and more! This year, all of our workshops will take place on Tuesdays from 7:15 to 8:15PM in a room TBD, starting on September 16 and running until December 2. This semester, we will be alternating weeks for workshops as follows:

September 16 - First Windows workshop
September 23 - First Linux workshop
September 30 - Second Windows workshop
October 7 - Second Linux workshop
... and so on. I hope to see you there!

    Team Entry Form
For those interested in competing, this is the single best way to stay in the loop with competition signups and tryouts. By filling out this form, you gain access to the CyberDawgs team server, and intermittent training exercises, resources, and sign-ups to compete in CTF and Red vs. Blue competitions with your fellow team members. Anyone can join, regardless of academic major, class standing, or any of that (I'm a History major)!

The first workshop will provide a general overview of the program and application requirements. It will also include time for attendees to discuss their potential research topics and their alignment with the SCGSR priority areas with managers of each participating program office. At the second workshop, staff members will guide attendees through the application process, answer general questions, provide guidance on proposal writing, and lead discussions with scientists and former awardees. Additionally, the program manager will host virtual office hours every Friday 1:00–2:00 p.m. ET starting on September 26, 2025 via this Zoom link.

The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students for conducting part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory in collaboration with a DOE national laboratory scientist. The goal of the program is to prepare graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the mission of DOE’s Office of Science. The research opportunity will advance the graduate students’ overall graduate theses while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the host DOE national laboratories. In addition, SCGSR awardees may have the opportunity for short international research visits to select prestigious centers to broaden their horizons.

Since its inception in 2014, the SCGSR program has provided support to over 1,300 graduate awardees from 170 U.S. universities to conduct thesis research at all 17 DOE national laboratories across the nation. Areas of research include but are not limited to: physics, chemistry, materials science, planetary science, geosciences, biosciences (non-medical), fusion science and engineering, mathematics, computer and computational sciences, engineering, microelectronics, quantum information science, and artificial intelligence.

The SCGSR program is sponsored and managed by the Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists, in collaboration with the Office of Science’s six research program offices and the DOE isotope R&D and production office, and DOE national laboratories/facilities. Program administration support is provided by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education.
