Joshi, who joined UMBC as an Assistant Professor in 1998, started working on AI and neural networks as a graduate student at Purdue University in the early 1990s. His research has continued to develop and apply a broad range of evolving AI concepts and systems to a variety of problems in different application domains, including cybersecurity, healthcare, social media, pervasive computing systems, high-performance computing, and multi-agent systems. An excerpt from the Fortune article is given below.

“Anupam Joshi had served as CAIO for less than a month at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County when he spoke to Fortune. He shares that the school’s leadership had realized that AI had been generating excitement beyond the typical areas of computer and information science. … As he settles into his new work, Joshi says he’s exploring research partnerships that can be extended with companies like Google and Microsoft, while also listening to how professors want to utilize and teach AI. Many college professors are already using AI in their work, at times to the consternation of the students they teach. Joshi says teachers also tend to be a vocal crowd that isn’t shy about sharing their scholarly opinions.

“I think whoever comes into these kinds of roles needs to start with the position of humility,” says Joshi. “Because it’s one thing to do your own research in AI, trying to push the state of the art, and it’s another thing to use that as a tool to transform enterprises.”

The Reality of On-Campus Work

<Tagline>FYI: the demand is often greater than what’s available</Tagline>

At the start of a new academic year, many students arrive at UMBC hoping to land an on-campus job right away. These roles can be a great way to earn income, build experience, and connect with the campus community. But before getting too caught up in the excitement of applying, it’s important to understand the reality: on-campus jobs are limited and highly competitive.

Why On-Campus Jobs Are Limited

On-campus roles are in high demand at UMBC, and the number of positions is usually much smaller than the number of students who apply. Many jobs open only at certain times of year, and some positions prioritize students who are work-study eligible. For international students in particular who are typically only eligible to work on campus their first year, this means the competition is even tougher.

How to Stand Out as an Applicant

While you can’t control the number of jobs available, you can control how you present yourself:

Polish Your Resume: Make sure it’s clear, concise, and highlights skills relevant to the position.

Be Flexible: Consider a variety of roles across campus — from administrative offices to research roles to tutoring. The more flexible you are, the more opportunities you’ll find.

Show Initiative: Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and a willingness to learn. Employers want students who will show up on time and contribute positively.

Leverage Connections: Talk to peers, faculty, and staff who might know of openings. Sometimes opportunities are shared through word of mouth.

Other Ways to Gain Experience

If you don’t land an on-campus job right away, don’t lose hope. There are many other ways to build skills that employers value:

Volunteer with campus organizations or community groups.

Join student clubs to practice leadership and teamwork.

Consider programs and initiatives at The Shriver Center that focuses on community-engaged, applied learning.

Work on personal or research projects that showcase your talents.

Explore short-term, project-based experiences like micro-internships from Parker Dewey.

Remember: not having an on-campus job doesn’t mean you’re falling behind. Employers care about the skills and experiences you bring — not just where they came from.

Take the Next Step

Missed this week’s On-Campus & Part-Time Jobs Expo? It’s not too late to reach out to employers. Check out the Directory to see who’s hiring, and find their positions on Handshake. Ask questions and make connections along the way. Good luck, and reach out to the Career Center for more support as needed.

Homecoming 2025 Registration Is Live!

Dear Retrievers,

It's time to get excited! Homecoming 2025 is just around the corner, and we can't wait to see campus come alive with Retriever fever! This is our favorite time of year, when we all come together—alumni, faculty, staff, students, families, and neighbors—to celebrate what it means to be a Retriever. The energy on campus during Homecoming is absolutely unmatched!

This year's Homecoming festivities kick off with our annual student org kickball tournament and bonfire on Sunday, October 5, and continue with a full week of incredible events through Sunday, October 12. We've been working hard to create a schedule that truly has something for everyone, whether you're looking to reconnect with old friends, enjoy some fun and games, or just want another excuse to show off your Retriever pride.

Visit the Homecoming website for the full schedule, but here’s a sneak peek at some of the highlights we have planned:

Homecoming Bonfire (October 5): Start the week by building your Retriever spirit.

Staff and Faculty Social (October 8): Socialize with colleagues and enjoy some delicious appetizers.

Retriever Madness (October 9): Cheer on our student-athletes and campus community and enjoy some tasty snacks and beverages!

GRIT-X Talks and Reception (October 9): Hear from some of UMBC’s most intriguing faculty, staff, and alumni minds. View this year’s speakers at research.umbc.edu/grit-x.

Retriever Spotlight in the Skylight (October 10): Celebrate the artistic talents of our alumni community in this brand new event.

Homecoming Carnival (October 10 – 11): Enjoy rides, games, and fun for all ages.

Retriever 5K and Family Fun Run (October 11): Register by September 19 to receive a commemorative t-shirt and medal.

Taste of Maryland Crab Feast (October 11): Feast at the Taste of Maryland, which includes all your Maryland favorites—even if you don't eat crabs! Vegetarian and vegan options will be available.

Homecoming Soccer Games (October 11 – 12): Cheer on men’s soccer as they take on New Hampshire Saturday, October 11, at 7 p.m. Women’s soccer hosts Vermont the next day, Sunday, October 12, at 12 p.m. There’s a replica jersey giveaway for the first 300 fans!
