Please Encourage Students to Take the BCSSE!

15 Minutes is all it takes to make a Difference at UMBC

Academic Transition Programs, within the Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, is currently administering the Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE). This survey collects information about first-year students’ (both incoming freshmen and transfers) engagement in high school/their former institution as well as their anticipated participation in activities and programs that UMBC offers for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates anticipate spending their time during their first year on campus and beyond. This is the partner survey of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), which students will be asked to complete in the spring. Completion of both surveys will give our campus a robust view of first-year students’ perceptions at the onset of their college careers through the end of their first year.

We need your help to spread the word about BCSSE! Please encourage all first-year students to take the survey. Those who complete the survey during the administration window, which runs until Wednesday, September 10, 2025, are eligible for a raffle to win $25 in Retriever Dollars!

To participate, students must access the individual link sent to their UMBC email accounts. The email subject should be “UMBC: Please Participate In Our New Student Survey! Win $25 Retriever Dollars.”

New Federal Research Security (RS) Training Requirement

<Tagline>Research Security Training Implementation UMBC</Tagline>

New Federal Research Security (RS) Training Requirement

Several federal agencies have taken steps to implement the
Research Security (RS) training required out of NSPM-33 and the Chips and
    Science Act.

All key personnel on projects funded by the National Science
Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of
Defense (DOD), and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) must now complete federally
mandated research security training to strengthen the integrity and protection
of U.S. funded research. Further, NIH
issued NOT-OD-25-1255 which states all Senior/Key Personnel must complete
research security training within 12 months of a proposed submission to be
eligible for an (NIH) award. It is anticipated that all federal grant
funding agencies will soon include research security training requirements. Therefore, UMBC is requiring all key
personnel on federally funded (direct or flow through) sponsored proposals and
    awards to complete this training.

How to Complete the Training:

Frequently
    Asked Questions

Who must complete RS Training?

Anyone who is key on
    any federal proposal or award.

We are also
recommending the training for anyone working on any sponsored award, as well as
    the RCA administrative community.

Please note, we do
expect RS training requirements to expand, as federal and non-federal agencies
follow NIH, NSF, DOD and DOE.

Why is RS training required?

Stemming from
administrative direction provided to agencies via NSPM-33 and the Chips and
Science Act, multiple federal agencies (NSF, DOE, NIH and DOD) have issued
    mandatory security training. It is
anticipated that all federal agencies and non-federal sponsors will be issuing
    similar requirements.

When must RS training be completed?

As of 10/1/25 OSP
will not submit a proposal or issue any award modification without the training
completed. OSP will attempt to provide
any flexibility allowed by the sponsor throughout 2025.

Each agency is implementing
a bit differently. NSF and DOE require
this training to be completed at the proposal stage, NIH requires as Just in
Time, or award stage. As such, we are
requiring the training at the proposal stage for all sponsors.

Training renewals
will be required every three (3) years. (Note: We are still verifying if NIH is requiring an
    annual renewal).

How long will it take me to complete the RS training?

CITI estimates the
training will take about an hour.

How is the RS training
    being tracked?

The training is capture as part of your CITI training
portfolio. It is also fed into Kuali
where it will be attached to your Personal record in Kuali where all of your
other RCA training is captured. At the
proposal stage, your unit Administrative team will be able to confirm the
training has been completed for anyone named on a proposal. OSP is required to officially certify the
training is completed when the proposal is submitted. Your Administrative support will also be
required to verify training when any key or named individuals are added to an
award. It is critical that you utilize
your UMBC login credentials to access the CITI training modules. Otherwise, your training will not feed to
    Kuali.

I am on a Technology Control Plan (TCP) that required me
to take Export Control Training. Is that the same?

Unfortunately, it is not the same. Export Control
Training does not cover all the topics associated with Research Security
Training. Export Control is a component of Research Security.

I have taken PIRATE, does that satisfy as meeting the RS
    training requirement?

Not yet. We are working with CITI to move PIRATE from
Blackboard to CITI. Once it has been moved, we are creating a link to the
    required RS training.

I have taken RCR training, does that satisfy as meeting
    the RS training requirement?

No. The RCR RS training is simply a short overview,
but it does not cover the all the topics required by the federal agencies.

Joshi, who joined UMBC as an Assistant Professor in 1998, started working on AI and neural networks as a graduate student at Purdue in the early 1990s. His research has continued to use a broad range of evolving AI concepts and systems to a variety of problems in different application domains, including cybersecurity, healthcare, social media, pervasive computing systems, high-performance computing, and multi-agent systems. Here’s an excerpt from the Fortune article.

Joshi says teachers also tend to be a vocal crowd that isn’t shy about sharing their scholarly opinions.

“I think whoever comes into these kinds of roles needs to start with the position of humility,” says Joshi. “Because it’s one thing to do your own research in AI, trying to push the state of the art, and it’s another thing to use that as a tool to transform enterprises.”

Fellow Retrievers offer 4 pieces of advice to get the most out of your time at UMBC

Now that the first week of classes is underway and you’re starting to find your new classrooms and make friends, you might be wondering how to make the most of this semester (whether it’s your first or last!) Faculty, staff, and students have chimed in to offer some advice for the year ahead, like embracing discomfort to help you grow, improving your financial literacy, and importantly, carving out your own ways to have fun.

Get money smart

Andrea Cipolla, director of financial aid and scholarships, explains how to get money smart while pursuing a degree: “Being financially responsible is an important aspect of the college experience. Make sure you utilize all the resources available to you. File your FASFA, participate in FinancialSmarts Cash Course to improve your financial awareness and skills, and file the Scholarship Retriever application every year.”

Students and staff chat in the UMBC Career Center. (Brad Ziegler/UMBC)

Take breaths and take charge

Ann Sofie Clemmensen, associate professor in dance and the Linehan Artist Scholars Program director, highlights the importance of taking a breath, just as much as taking charge: “Do not hesitate to ask your professor, a teaching assistant, academic advisor, or a classmate for help, whether that is asking for clarification on an assignment or advice. In college, you cannot take a passive role, so I encourage every student to take charge of their academic trajectory.” She also wants to remind students that, “Inhalation is the source of inspiration, the exhale is the work that follows… so remember to take in deep breaths. Make sure you carve out time and space to breathe.”

Many students take charge of their time at UMBC by signing up for clubs at Involvement Fest. (Brad Ziegler/UMBC)

Clemmensen calls attention to a quote by the American filmmaker, David Lynch: “Ideas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper. Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure.” She explains that, “as a student, I encourage you to check in with yourself to see if you are primarily swimming in shallow water. If so, find the courage and motivation to explore further out.”

Use the resources available

Senior dance major, Madison Kayser, offers her resourceful advice as a transfer student to fellow Retrievers: “Really invest time into using resources and events provided to you by the school. I know it seems pointless, but trust me it makes or breaks your experience in college.”

Students outside the CEI Arena for UMBC’s 2025 Convocation (Kiirstn Pagan ’11/UMBC)

Find the people who motivate you

“Be open minded and explore” is the core of what Tamya Davis, senior psychology and social work double major, wants to remind her fellow students.

“There is a lot to do and experience so trying new things, whether it’s a class or a food, can be really fun. Campus also has a lot happening always so go to different events, different clubs, etc. Never be afraid of being uncomfortable; it just means you have an opportunity to grow.”

Students celebrate the start of the new school year at Convocation. (Kiirstn Pagan ’11/UMBC)

Tamya also highlights the importance of having fun; “The people you meet on campus will definitely make your experience better since you are building community and a support system. As cliché as it sounds, it really helps to have people around you to motivate you and share your passion.”

Kayla Logue ’27 is a 2025 UCM intern and Linehan Scholar who is majoring in dance.
