Female Lodger Wanted

We are seeking a female student to rent furnished bedrooms in a private single-family home located in the Maiden Choice/Arbutus area, available August 23, 2025, or earlier (ready by August 1st and after). The room comes with linens and are part of a shared home with two female UMBC/UMB students/professionals, the landlord couple and non-shedding older friendly labradoodle, which is the sole responsibility of the landlord. We are looking for a respectful and considerate individual who values diversity, and is either a UMBC/UMB Ph.D., Graduate, or Junior/Senior Undergraduate student. The ideal candidate is a non-smoker, non-drug user, pet-free, and maintains a tidy living space. Our home features a large open concept renovated 4 bedroom and 3.5 bathrooms on a quiet dead-end street. Our home is conveniently located less than 2 miles from the UMBC campus and close to two shopping centers with shuttle stops. The UMBC Shuttle and public transportation bus stop are within walking distance. The UMBC Transit runs buses almost every 15 minutes from the Paradise-Purple Line during the week from 7am-12am. The room is an upstairs bedroom with a large closet that will share a bathroom with one other female. The room is furnished with a matching queen bed, dresser, nightstands, desk, smart TV, and Wi-Fi. All bedrooms have their own key locks. You will have access to a spacious open concept kitchen, laundry room, large front covered porch, living and dining rooms. All utilities included, water, gas, electric, Wi-Fi, and streaming cable services. We supply trash bags, dish detergents, and cleaning supplies. The landlord is responsible for maintaining the lawn and landscaping. The monthly rent is $1,000 FIRM for one female person, with a $500 deposit. We prefer a 9-month or month-to-month lease but will consider longer leases and flexible move-in and out dates. Please note that this is a private home and not an Airbnb, hotel, campus apartment, or dorm. If interested, please call 410-999-4668, Monday-Friday, 6pm to 8pm, to discuss further and schedule a viewing.

June Gritty Award Winner: Khalil Alston

<Tagline>Division of Information Technology Outstanding Staff Member</Tagline>

Khalil Alston of the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) has been named the recipient of the June Gritty Award for exceptional technical support and outstanding professional service across multiple high-stakes university events.

Complex Virtual Event: Middle States Self-Study Community Event

Khalil's remarkable performance was highlighted during two critical campus initiatives. Most notably, he played a pivotal technical role in the April 23 virtual Middle States Self-Study Community Event, where he managed a complex virtual platform that engaged the entire campus community.

Khalil provided excellent technical support and training. This virtual event invited the entire campus community to share feedback on UMBC’s draft Self-Study. Kahlil arranged and led training sessions for senior university administrators in the weeks leading up to the event. The event involved a main session, multiple breakout rooms, chat, a timed activity, and individual user support. During the event, he served as the lead technical support of the DoIT Classroom Technology team, which included Dave Souder and Steve Anderson. His clear instructions, attention to detail, and calm demeanor demonstrated DoIT’s professionalism at its finest. Event organizers were pleased with the results!

"His clear instructions and calm demeanor demonstrated DoIT professionalism at its finest," said event coordinators.

Onsite Crucial AV Support for UCM at OCA Mocha

In addition to the self-study event, Khalil has consistently provided crucial audiovisual support for University Communications and Marketing (UCM), including challenging off-campus events. During one OCA Mocha event, he remained on-site after initial assessments, ultimately preventing a potential technical disruption.

Event organizers praise Alston's technical expertise and commitment, as well as his ability to quickly resolve equipment challenges and create hybrid meeting environments where standard technologies were unavailable.

“Again, Khalil saved the day! Khalil’s technical skills and commitment to excellence are second to none. His pleasant disposition, too, is worthy of praise. DoIT and the UMBC campus as a whole are fortunate to have him.”

The Gritty Award recognizes UMBC employees who go above and beyond their standard job responsibilities, with Khalil emerging as a standout performer this month.
