Summer Goals: How to Build Your Skills During Break

<Tagline>Boost your career with these tips.</Tagline>

Summer break
is the perfect time to recharge — but it’s also a golden opportunity to invest
in yourself. Whether you’re a graduate student working through coursework or
heading into your final year, using the summer months to build skills can help
you feel more confident and career-ready when you return to campus.

Here are a few ways to use your summer
    wisely:

1. Learn Something New (at Your Own Pace)

Just because
class is out doesn’t mean learning has to stop. Try taking a free or low-cost
online course to explore a new skill or deepen one you already have.

Interested in coding? Check out the UMBC
         Training Centers’
courses on programming and software development.

Want to improve your data skills? Explore
         LinkedIn Learning or Coursera.

Thinking about graduate school? Practice
         GRE vocabulary or sample problems.

Even committing just a few hours a
week can make a noticeable difference.

2. Volunteer or Freelance

Giving back
is a great way to gain real-world experience — plus, it looks
great on a resume. Find a nonprofit, community group, or campus department
where you can offer your help. You can also explore small freelance projects to
build your portfolio — especially if you're in writing, design, or tech. Check
out the Forage’s job simulations as
another way to build skills that replicate real work in the field.

3.
    Work on a Personal Project

Have a passion you’ve been putting
off? Now’s your time. Create a blog, design an app, start a podcast, or build
something hands-on. Employers love to see initiative and creativity—especially
when you can explain the “why” behind your work.

4.
    Update Your Materials

Use this
time to refresh your resume, update your LinkedIn profile, and complete your
Handshake profile. Add new experiences, clean up formatting, and make sure your
materials reflect the kind of opportunities you want moving forward. Depending
on the roles you are applying for, you may also want to consider create
separate resumes to better match job positions.

5. Reflect and Plan

Summer is a
great time to take a step back and reflect on your goals. What did you learn
last semester? What kind of work excites you? Where do you want to grow?
Journaling or creating a simple vision board can help you stay focused and
intentional about the year ahead. And should something change during the
academic year, it’s ok to continue to hone and revise your career plan as
    needed.

Looking
    for Summer Career Inspiration?

Check out the UMBC Career Center’s
podcast, "UMBC Careers Unleashed — featuring real stories, tips, and
advice from the Career Center’s staff and UMBC students. It’s perfect for a
walk, commute, or summer chill session.

Listen here and get inspired to make this summer your
most strategic one yet. And if you need help kicking off your plans, the Career Center is open
during the summer with drop-ins and 1:1 virtual and in-person appointments.

You've got time — and you’ve got
options. Let summer be your launchpad, and good luck!

Female Lodgers Wanted

We are seeking female students to rent furnished bedrooms in a private single-family home located in the Maiden Choice/Arbutus area, available August 23, 2025, or earlier (ready by July 1st and after). The rooms come with linens and are part of a shared home with two female UMBC/UMB students/professionals, the landlord couple and non-shedding older friendly labradoodle, which is the sole responsibility of the landlord. We are looking for a respectful and considerate individual who values diversity, and is either a UMBC/UMB Ph.D., Graduate, or Junior/Senior Undergraduate student. The ideal candidate is a non-smoker, non-drug user, pet-free, and maintains a tidy living space. Our home features a large open concept renovated 4 bedroom and 3.5 bathrooms on a quiet dead-end street. Our home is conveniently located less than 2 miles from the UMBC campus and close to two shopping centers with shuttle stops. The UMBC Shuttle and public transportation bus stop are within walking distance. The UMBC Transit runs buses almost every 15 minutes from the Paradise-Purple Line during the week from 7am-12am. The rooms available are two upstairs bedrooms that share a bathroom with large closets. Each room comes furnished with a full or queen bed, dresser, nightstands, desk, smart TV, and Wi-Fi. All bedrooms have their own key locks. You will have access to a spacious open concept kitchen, laundry room, large front covered porch, living and dining rooms. All utilities, including water, gas, electric, Wi-Fi, and streaming cable services, are included. We supply trash bags, dish detergents, and cleaning supplies. The landlord is responsible for maintaining the lawn and landscaping. The monthly rent is $1,000 FIRM per room for one person, with a $500 deposit. We prefer a 9-month or month-to-month lease but will consider longer leases and flexible move-in and out dates. Please note that this is a private home and not an Airbnb, hotel, campus apartment, or dorm. If interested, please call 410-999-4668, Monday-Friday, 6pm to 8pm, to discuss further and schedule a viewing.

    Abstract

Causal reasoning is fundamental to understanding dynamic processes in
complex scientific systems such as climate, glaciology, and remote
sensing. While modern deep learning models have demonstrated strong
performance on sequence modeling tasks, they often rely on purely
correlational representations, limiting their generalization and
interpretability under distribution shifts or partial observability.
This dissertation presents a principled progression of methods that
integrate causal discovery and representation learning for modeling
dynamic systems. First, we reinterpret Reconstructed Phase Space (RPS)
modeling as an unsupervised representation learning approach for
satellite-derived time series, enabling interpretable classification of
supraglacial lake evolution via Gaussian Mixture Models. We then extend
this with a causally-informed temporal modeling framework using PCMCI+
to identify stable, regionally meaningful predictors, which improve
generalization and robustness in sequence classification models.
However, both methods operate in the space of observed variables and do
not recover unobserved mechanisms. To address this limitation, we
propose a novel Causal Representation Learning (CRL) framework for
dynamic systems that employs variational autoencoders with
interventional regularization to learn low-dimensional latent variables
aligned with underlying causal factors. This framework is designed to
support do-operations and counterfactual reasoning in latent
space, and will be validated on benchmark datasets with known causal
graphs (Pendulum, Flow, CelebA), before being applied to supraglacial
lake dynamics as a real-world use case. Collectively, this work aims to
advance the boundary of causal modeling in temporal systems by bridging
the gap between statistical representation learning and structural
causal inference, offering scalable and interpretable tools for
scientific discovery in dynamic, high-dimensional environments.
