UMBC researchers partner with UMB to advance healthcare technology

Both UMBC researchers are partnering with colleagues at UMB on their projects.

Li’s research aims to develop a reliable method to monitor blood pressure with a smartphone. High blood pressure, or hypertension, affects more than 1.3 billion people globally, and while conventional devices to monitor blood pressure are accurate, they are bulky and impractical in everyday life, Li says. As an affordable and accessible alternative, Li is testing if a smartphone, outfitted with ultrasound sensors to measure blood flow and using the built-in microphone to record heart sounds, could deliver reliable readings. Li’s partnership with UMB will allow the team to conduct clinical trials, with both healthy individuals and those with hypertension, to rigorously evaluate the system’s accuracy and effectiveness.

In a separate project, Kalpakis and his colleagues are developing a new approach to help trauma physicians make better-informed treatment decisions quickly. The team is working on a machine-learning framework that can help ER doctors predict medical outcomes, such as which patients will experience severe complications from trauma such as hemorrhaging, and what their blood transfusion needs may be. Unlike other machine learning models, the new approach can update over time and deliver measures of uncertainty, helping clinicians place more trust in the model’s guidance.

“These projects highlight how interdisciplinary collaboration between UMBC and the University of Maryland School of Medicine can drive innovations in medical care and improve public health,” Li says. “I’m excited and proud to take this work forward.”

Liana Harron to join UMBC Music Faculty

We are delighted to introduce Liana Harron who will join the UMBC faculty in Fall 2025 as an Assistant Professor of Piano.

Dr. Liana Pailodze Harron, blending her Georgian heritage with
an American spirit, captivates audiences with daring performances that breathe
life into contemporary classical music. Praised by Pulitzer Prize-winning
critic Tim Page of The Wall Street Journal as 'smashingly effective,' her
latest album with Vesna Duo mesmerized audiences, showcasing her passionate
interpretations. Her artistry has graced esteemed venues across the United
States and Europe, including iconic stages like Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center,
the New World Center, and the United Nations.

Dedicated to pushing the boundaries of music, Dr. Harron has
shared stages with artists across the spectrum—from rock star Steven Tyler to
classical virtuosos—thriving on diverse collaborations fueled by her unending
artistic curiosity. Whether as a soloist with orchestras like the Shilakadze
Chamber Orchestra, the Georgian Television Orchestra, or the Frost Symphony
Orchestra, she's continuously championed contemporary compositions.

Lauded for her work with Vesna Duo alongside percussionist Dr. Ksenija Komljenović, their performances at the 2022 Chamber Music America Conference garnered rave reviews. Their interpretation of Igor Stravinsky’s 'The Rite of Spring' for marimba and piano, arranged by Komljenović, continues to captivate audiences and receive accolades from esteemed publications.

An avid recording artist, Dr. Harron’s repertoire spans from contemporary compositions by György Ligeti and Archil Giorgobiani to cherished classics by Hindemith and Respighi. Her versatility shines through modern works by John Adams and Ólafur Arnalds, which she skillfully arranged for piano and Loopstation. Her solo album, 'Light-Year,' is an emotive collection that weaves together intimate pieces from cinematic composers like Jóhann Jóhannsson, Max Richter, Philip Glass, Ólafur Arnalds, and Kris Lennox. And her latest album,’Kartli: Stories of Georgia,’ a collection of 20th-century Georgian classical music, was featured on Billboard Georgia.
