The Earth Day Symposium (EDS) 2025 Planning Committee, led
by Roshan Mishra, organized a wonderful, informative all-day event, held on
Friday, April 25, 2025, in UMBC’s Physics building. The 9th Annual
EDS explored the theme “Emerging Scientists Amid Policy Change.” The day
included talks, a panel discussion, and an industry spotlight session. Poster
    presentations were held in
the afternoon, and the top 3 poster presenters received UMBC e-gift cards.

Dr. Zhibo Zhang kicked off the event with a review of the
history of UMBC’s EDS, which was established in 2017 by UMBC’s Atmospheric
Physics graduate program; more information is available here. The UMBC Physics Department and GESTAR II sponsored
    the event.

Throughout the day, invited speakers from universities,
NASA, and industry shared their research, experiences, and advice, particularly
as it relates to early-career scientists and aspiring students. Dr. Amita Mehta
(GESTAR II/UMBC) presented “Historical and Emerging NASA Missions for Societal
Applications”; Dr. Dylan Powell presented on “Science and Technology
Corporation (STC),” which also was the Industry Spotlight; Dr. Jack Kaye (NASA
ESD) attended virtually from NASA HQ to present “Thoughts for Early Career
Earth Scientists” (note, Dr. Kaye’s retirement party was that afternoon –
congratulations!); Dr. Nakul Karle (Howard Univ.) presented “From Boundary
Layer Turbulence to Virga Precipitation”; and, Dr. Zhibo Zhang (UMBC) presented
“How not to write “bad” proposals.”

Additionally, in the morning, the EDS Panel gathered to
provide insight and respond to various questions from host Hannah Seppala. The
panel discussion’s theme was “Navigating Change: Personal Journey,” and panel members were Dr. Maria Molina (UMD), Dr. Henrique Barbosa (Physics/UMBC), Dr.

Launching Arts+UMBC Initiative

Dear UMBC Community,

I am excited to announce the launch of Arts+UMBC, an ongoing, collaborative, multidisciplinary effort that will celebrate the arts at UMBC through the expansion of programming. On-campus, community, and national artists will be featured in unique and innovative ways that highlight and grow the UMBC art scene and the connection with the broader community.

Committees made up of faculty, staff, and students representing a range of arts disciplines worked diligently throughout the past year to plan and support an inspired calendar of arts programming that will highlight the creativity of our community. We will explore cross-disciplinary programming themes, including Trailblazers, the Harlem Renaissance, Artful Stories, and Space, Place, and Justice. We look forward to inviting the surrounding community to join us in celebrating what makes UMBC arts unique.

I’d like to thank the many people who have worked on this initiative to date, including the committee members listed below. I look forward to sharing more in the early fall around how we will celebrate the arts at UMBC in new and wonderful ways.

Sincerely,

Our Vision

UMBC will be recognized in the region and beyond as a transformative, inviting arts destination where creative interdisciplinary research and public-facing programming challenge, enrich, and inspire both on and off campus. By embracing UMBC's position as a leading voice in the arts and celebrating the breadth and depth of work and research among our community in the visual and performing arts disciplines, we will look to the arts initiative as a catalyst for evolving our campus arts culture into an interconnected and innovative network that will prepare our students for their creative futures.

Our Goals

Celebrate the talent and excellence of the arts at UMBC and the ways we engage our surrounding communities.

Fortify our reputation in the region and beyond as a comprehensive research university, in which the arts are integral.

Develop engaged regional audiences of all ages who visit UMBC as active participants in the arts.

Broaden our fundraising efforts in the arts in order to support and amplify the impact of the arts in the lives of our students and alumni, and by extension the communities in which they practice and perform.

Establish a foundation for interdisciplinary connections between academic departments and centers.

A Journey in Human-Centered Computing: Personal Growth and Professional Development

In the rapidly evolving field of technology, the importance of user-centered solutions has gained unprecedented significance. As technology continues to shape our daily lives, the role of individuals dedicated to making these experiences seamless, meaningful, and accessible is ever more vital. This article explores the inspiring journey of Indu Ravali Akula, a master's student in human-centered computing and a developer within the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Her experiences illuminate the profound benefits of embracing curiosity, adaptability, and collaboration in both academic pursuits and professional development.

The Role of Human-Centered Computing

Human-centered computing is an interdisciplinary field focused on designing, implementing, and evaluating computational systems with the people who use them in mind. Unlike traditional technological approaches, which may prioritize technical efficiency or innovation for its own sake, human-centered computing puts human needs, behaviors, and experiences at the forefront.

Joining the Division of Information Technology: A Transformative Experience

One of the most rewarding aspects of Indu’s role at DoIT has been working with a diverse group of professionals from various backgrounds and disciplines. This diversity not only exposed her to different perspectives but also taught her the value of collaboration in solving complex problems.

Contributing to Impactful Projects

Throughout her DoIT experience, Indu played an active part in numerous projects focused on enhancing user experience, optimizing internal workflows, and improving form systems. These initiatives weren’t just routine technical upgrades—they were fundamental in creating streamlined processes for multiple communities at UMBC. Witnessing firsthand how her work contributed to positive change gave her a sense of purpose and motivation.

Developing Core Skills

Indu highlights several core skills she cultivated during her time at DoIT:

Accessible Design: Learning to create documents and systems that are inclusive and accessible to all users, regardless of their abilities.

Simplification of Complex Documentation: Distilling complex information into clear, user-friendly documents, ensuring that essential details are not lost in translation.

Collaborative Problem Solving: Working as part of a team to address multifaceted challenges, drawing on the unique strengths of each member.

These skills are not just valuable for her current role—they form a foundation she intends to carry into all future professional endeavors.

Advice for New Students

Based on her journey, Indu offers astute advice for those aspiring to join DoIT or similar organizations:

Embrace Curiosity: Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Curiosity is the lifeblood of innovation and improvement.

Take Initiative: Stepping forward to take on tasks and challenges accelerates personal and professional growth.

Value Supportive Environments: Seek out teams and workplaces where support and encouragement are part of the culture.

Indu emphasizes that being open to learning experiences and actively participating in new initiatives sets the stage for exponential growth.

Looking Ahead: Career Aspirations and Ambitions

After graduation, Indu plans to work in the design or technology industry to build additional experience. Her ultimate ambition is to establish her own branding and design agency—a space where innovative experiences and tools are crafted to solve real-time problems while enhancing user engagement and satisfaction. Her vision is anchored in creating experiences that matter—solutions that not only function well but also improve people's lives in measurable ways. By combining her technical expertise with a keen understanding of user needs, she hopes to leave a lasting legacy in the fields of design and technology.

By embracing curiosity, prioritizing user needs, and surrounding oneself with supportive mentors and colleagues, anyone can transform their educational experiences into a springboard for innovation and positive change. As Indu looks ahead—envisioning a future in branding, design, and user-centered innovation—she represents the transformative impact that thoughtful, empathetic, and engaged technologists can have on the world.

Shout-Out!

Indu will be graduating in May 2025 from UMBC, with an MS in Human Centered Computing. Congratulations Indu!
