We are working with Tec because of their interest in PROMISE, and our mutual values, which include dedication to teaching students, integrity, leadership, and community service.

The PROMISE AGEP is collaborating with Tec based on projects with the Latin and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions, the American Society for Engineering Education, and the World Engineering Education Forum. Since Monterrey Tec has a variety of disciplines available, they are interested in considering candidates from all disciplines.

    Name: A. Jay Nwachu
Major: Psychology
Grad year: 2003
Q: What do/did you enjoy most about being a part of the UMBC community?
The academically empowering environment as well as the diversity of the student body provided an opportunity for personal, academic and professional growth.
Q: UMBC is approaching its 50th anniversary (2016) and certainly the campus has come a long way – from a small commuter school to the nation’s #1 “up-and-coming” university – in such a relatively short period of time. What, in your opinion, makes UMBC so unique/special? What’s your most memorable experience/moment at UMBC?
UMBC is rather unique given its rapid growth, not necessarily in numbers, but in its ability to compete with the nation’s best institutions in such a short period of time. My most memorable experience, out of many great experiences, was having the opportunity to partner with 2 of my best friends today to address the potential gaps in services that would result when the university administration decided to shut down the Office of Multicultural Affairs which served as an informal home for many on and off campus students. We were able to work with the administration to keep the office open but change its focus to serve the growing diversity at the university with more structured programming. The office remained open and was renamed the Office of Social Justice and Diversity Initiatives and has since been renamed to The Mosaic Center.
Q: If you could meet one person in the world who would it be and why?
Not anyone in particular. I believe that those that I cross paths with at any given space and time can contribute to my life in some capacity. I would rather live life with the anticipation of who next I can share my life with versus wishing to meet a particular person.
Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?
You can’t make everyone happy, just focus on making God happy.
Q: What is one book you think everyone should read?
This is a tough question……
Q: What is one thing you can’t live without?
Airplanes….the ability to travel.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

You can’t make everyone happy, just focus on making God happy.

Q: What is one book you think everyone should read?

This is a tough question……

Q: What is one thing you can’t live without?

Airplanes….the ability to travel.

Surf Club 2015

<Tagline>What does it mean to be a member of Surf Club?</Tagline>

So it's been almost two years since I've checked this group and I've noticed our membership has grown from 8 members to 28. If any of you have tried contacting Sean, chances are he never got back to you. We apologize for that.

For those of you who joined and never even attempted to contact any member of Surf Club, why did you even join the group?

Let me explain why Sean and I created Surf Club. Part of it was so we could put a bullshit extracurricular activity on our resume, but the main reason was UMBC's social scene is considerably lacking compared to other colleges. The only social scene really worth mentioning is greek life and not everyone is about that. We are a group of friends that love chilling, raging, going to the beach and surfing.

We knew there had to be people on campus with similar interests but with a social scene completely dominated by greek life, it was difficult to meet chill people. So we created Surf Club hoping that like-minded individuals would find the page, join, and together we could create an alternative social scene at UMBC that we could be proud to be a part of.

Unfortunately we thought the group would just go viral (it didn't) and because all of the original members comprised our social group, we decided the group page was pointless. It essentially just advertised the fact that we like getting fucked up and didn't give a shit about much else.

Pretty fucking wild that 20 other people have joined since then. Even wilder is that I don't know who any of you are and none of you have posted anything to the group page.

Honestly I don't really care about any of that, but 20 of you joined this group for some reason and I assume at least a few of you did it because you shared similar interests with the founding members. If you are someone who wants to surf, meet chill people, party, and just have fucking fun while you're in college then join the facebook page and say what's up.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/420629597992149/

Surf Club was created as an option for those looking for a party scene that isn't greek life. It's up to the newer members to keep that option alive. We still get drunk, party, and from time to time do something stupid, but we won't make you pay for being a part of our group.

The Not-So-Measly Problem With Measles

It has been exactly a year since USDemocrazy published this article on the uptick of infectious diseases in the United States.

It looks like things remain unhappy… even The Happiest Place on Earth has been afffected.

That’s right- those pesky diseases have made their way to Disneyland. A recent measles outbreak in Disneyland has already affected more than 70 people in seven states and Mexico. All of these cases can be traced to Patient Zero.

The even more confounding issue is that the United States eliminated measles 15 years ago. What happened?

Well, add together a vulnerable population, an unvaccinated world-traveler, and one infectious disease and you have got a recipe for an outbreak. An outbreak in 2014 was brought from the Philippines. And if you really want to know what the big deal is- you can read the list of symptoms from the highly contagious disease here.

Central to the issue is vaccines. While the measles vaccine has proven to be safe, many families are opting out due to a plethora of reasons.

People are now asking- should the government step in? Should they allow religious or philosophical exemptions? How easy should it be to forgo vaccination? In some states, it is as simple as checking a box.

As a possible model to the nation, Mississippi is enjoying their measles-free state with a kindergarten vaccination rate of 99.7%. As Mary Currier, a state health officer in Mississippi so nicely put it,

“It’s nice not having measles in Mississippi”.

And Mississippi has a reason to brag. They have a successful public health campaign and strict vaccination laws. Regardless, it seems like this issue will not be resolved soon. We here at USDemocrazy hope that we will not have to revisit this again in a year’s time. Stay tuned.
