Visualization Techniques: A Unified Approach

Time and Place:
8:00-10:00am, 22 Jan 22 2015, ITE325

We propose a unified approach to understand why and how visualization works, motivated by scientists’ difficulties in obtaining insights from increasingly complex data that involves multi-modality brain networks from structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI and fMRI). Brain scientists are in need of visualization approaches to effectively analysis brain MRI data from different modalities. We design a unified theory expanded upon the classical 2D semiotics for the design and evaluation of brain network visualization approaches. Our research is divided to three-steps. First, we define a taxonomy that includes three dimensions: retinal variable, data continuity, and plane. Second, we demonstrated that this theory carries descriptive power in that we can use it to describe existing visualization techniques for brain imaging visualizations. We then propose five empirical studies to understand and evaluate encoding approaches in structure and functional networks accordingly. The first three studies focus on single modality and the last two studies differences in dual-modality multiplex network comparison based on cohort analyses. Using the results derived from the empirical studies, we present a visual analytics approach for brain scientists to explore cohort and individual brain network to let them answer research questions. We use computational methods to derive relationships from two modalities in cohorts of two modalities, and then represent cohort with uncertainty as well as individual ones for brain scientists to study uncertainty in network analysis.

Kimberly Moffitt, American Studies, on The Marc Steiner Show

Kimberly Moffitt, an Associate Professor of American Studies, appeared on twice on WEAA’s The Marc Steiner Show earlier this month to discuss race and representation in film and advertising.

On January 8, Moffitt participated in an engaging discussion about the recent films Annie, Exodus, and Top Five, and her personal experience viewing the film Annie with her daughter: “This is a film that really resonates with her, and I think it has a lot to do with us listening to our children that they want to see themselves reflected in society and here is a perfect opportunity for that to happen.”

Moffitt participated in the discussion along with Ray Winbush, Director of the Institute for Urban Research at Morgan State University. To listen to the full segment, click here.

On January 16, Moffitt participated in a discussion on race and representation in Selma, the Golden Globes, and other topics with Kalima Young, Director of the Baltimore Art + Justice Project.

The segment began with a discussion on Ava DuVernay, the director of Selma: “I appreciate her voice and I’m happy that she’s at the table making a stance and telling stories through her lens because it’s not a lens or a set of eyes that we often get to see films through,” Moffitt said. To listen to the full segment, click here.

The Power of Becoming Visible

We had started the week as strangers, but the twelve of us had bonded by sharing experiences and stories at UMBC’s winter 2015 STRiVE student leadership retreat. Over the preceding few days we had dropped most of our pretenses, and together created a space in which we could comfortably be both honest and uncertain. As we sat in a circle facing each other on the retreat’s final night, two coaches and ten STRiVE participants giving each other constructive feedback, positive energy filled the room. Andrew, marveling, pointed out that we didn’t even know each other’s last names (we immediately shared them). Yet somehow each of us had become visible to the others in ways that revealed our enormous potential and our necessity to the group.

That moment of power and possibility has important implications for all of us concerned with preparing undergraduates to be capable participants in democracy and agents of positive change in their communities. Conversations about civic learning and democratic engagement in higher education often focus on building knowledge and skills. Both STRiVE and the class I teach with Craig Berger on Civic Agency and Social Entrepreneurship (AMST 205/POLI 205/SOCY 205, fall semesters) highlight analytical frameworks, tools, and tactics for working in groups, communicating across difference, developing strategic plans, and managing projects. Yet without the sense of presence, connectedness, self-worth, and indispensability that STRiVE also inspires, all that information and all those tools would have limited value, like so much firewood without a spark.

All of us in that room, and others in similar groups in other rooms at the retreat site, had contended with feelings of powerlessness and isolation in other settings. My own anxieties about my worth and potential contributions began in childhood, and no amount of jumping through hoops on the straight and narrow path to conventional success ever allayed them. My life changed when I finally allowed myself to choose a career in which I could express and be my authentic self: curious, vulnerable, and incomplete; in which my ongoing growth could serve and fuel others’ growth. I became newly and truly visible to myself and others, and alive to the ways people can pool our passions and talents to shape our world together.

Sitting with my new friends in our circle last week, I could see very clearly how our individual struggles and stories had put us in a position to help each other. Each of us mattered, in part because each of us knew what it was like to doubt the value of our presence and the possibility that we could make a difference. The genius of STRiVE is that it engages coaches and participants in opening spaces in which all of us, students and non-students, can become visible to each other and discover our collective power. If higher education is to teach and inspire a new generation of students to renew our democracy and tackle the great problems of our age, our colleges and universities also must be spaces for liberation.

Kimberly Moffitt, an Associate Professor of American Studies, appeared on twice on WEAA’s The Marc Steiner Show earlier this month to discuss race and representation in film and advertising. On January 8, Moffitt participated in an engaging discussion about the recent films Annie, Exodus, and Top Five, and her personal experience viewing the film Annie with her daughter: “This is a film that really resonates with her, and I think it has a lot to do with us listening to our children that they want to see themselves reflected in society and here is a perfect opportunity for that to happen.” Moffitt participated in the discussion along with Ray Winbush, …

Researcher of the Week: Pauline Xu

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Pauline,

She is a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major and both an URA and a Meyerhoff Scholar. She is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a recipient of the Lise Satterfield Scholarship and a 2014 UMBC Goldwater Scholarship nominee. Her future plans are to pursue her M.D./Ph.D. and to conduct translational research and teach at the medical school level.

How did you find your mentor for your research project?

It was near the end of my freshman year and I was looking for a research mentor whose lab I could work in starting the fall of my sophomore year. An older student I knew had been working in Dr. Garcin’s lab for some time, and he told me about his project that interested me and his rewarding experience in her lab, so I e-mailed Dr. Garcin about my interest and she gave me a position in her lab.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?

I have always been interested in proteins and protein structure. This project gave me a chance to apply what I had learned about mass spectrometry during an internship at the New York University School of Medicine last summer.

Do you get course credit for this work?

Yes, I do get academic credit for this work (2 credits).

How much time do you put into it?

It often depends on the week, but usually around 8-12 hours per week.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?

I heard about the URA program from my mentor and older students who had been URA Scholars, and thought it would be nice to apply and have my project funded.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?

I was a junior at the time, so by that time I had already completed my basic prerequisites plus a number of upper-level courses for my major. I had also worked in my mentor’s lab for over a year and had two summer research experiences elsewhere.

Was the application difficult to do?

No, the application was pretty straightforward.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?

My mentor helped me a lot with editing and tailoring the scope of my project in my application, and I’m really grateful for her time and valuable input.

What has been the hardest part about your research?

The hardest part has been the failures I have encountered in my experiments. It’s often difficult to elucidate why something is not working the way you expected, but the joy of successfully completing an experiment and generating new knowledge is beyond what words can describe.

How does your research relate to your work in other classes?

There are times when I’m in a class and the professor talks about something I’m working on or a technique I use in the lab. I always get super excited!

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Get involved. Don’t be afraid to approach a potential research mentor. If you’re truly interested in what they’re doing and willing to spend the time, they’ll be eager to help you.

What are your career goals?

I’d like to pursue an MD/PhD and conduct translational research and teach at the medical school level.

Read her abstract here...
