NCE FUNCTIONALITY TEMPORARILY DISABLED
Updated NIH Processes for No-Cost Extensions
Notice Number: NOT-OD-25-110
Purpose
This notice alerts the extramural
community that NIH has temporarily disabled the No-Cost Extension functionality
in eRA Commons. The Director of NIH has directed NIH staff to review all
existing grants and cooperative agreements to ensure that NIH awards do not
fund off-mission activities or projects. Therefore, temporarily disabling the
NCE functionality in eRA Commons will allow NIH staff to review and assess all
NCE requests to confirm that the activities proposed during the extension align
with the NIH mission and agency priorities.
At this time, all requests for
NCEs must be submitted as a prior approval request in eRA Commons, for NIH
review and approval. Requests for activities that do not align with the NIH
mission and agency priorities will not be approved.

Design and Fabrication for Tangible Interaction with Real-World Objects and Environments
12-1 pm EDT, Friday, May 9, 2025
UMBC ENG 231 (ACTIV lab)
The convergence of the physical and digital realms presents exciting challenges and opportunities in how we interact with the world around us. Digital fabrication offers a compelling approach to explore this interplay, enabling the design and creation of customized augmentations of objects and environments. This talk will delve into specific research that investigates two key aspects of this domain: novel methods for designing and fabricating directly onto the real-world, and ways of sensing inputs with passive, tangible interfaces that enable digital interactions. Drawing on principles from human-computer interaction and robotics, this presentation will highlight novel approaches to adapting and interacting with our physical environment.
Daniel Campos Zamora is a PhD student at the University of Washington, where he is a member of the Makeability Lab, advised by Jon E. Froehlich. Previously, he was at Disney Research working in robotics, HCI, and augmented reality; Carnegie Mellon University’s ArtFab; and ArtCenter College of Design, focusing on physical computing and digital fabrication.

Dear UMBC Community,
We are pleased to announce that finalists for the senior vice provost for academic affairs position will be visiting campus to participate in candidate forums and engage with the UMBC community.
A newly envisioned position at UMBC, elevating the former role of vice provost for academic affairs, the
senior vice provost will serve as an academic leader in the Office of the Provost and as the deputy provost. The most senior of the six vice provosts, the position will lead in the areas of academic resource planning and management, curricular affairs, accreditation and assessment, and large-scale initiatives. The senior vice provost will also serve as a spokesperson for academic affairs and will represent the provost and UMBC at public-facing events.

UMBC's Launchpad Accelerator - Applications Due TODAY!
The UMBC Launchpad accelerator is a 9-week cohort-based program where ventures prepare to go from pre-launch to launch, or for early-stage companies, create a pathway to accelerate growth.
Founders who are ready to fully commit to launching their venture and have validated their idea as an opportunity should apply. Participants are awarded up to $8,000 in non-dilutive funding for seed capital ($4k after 1 month and $4k at the end). Mentors will be assigned to each team.
Teams will perform deep customer discovery, develop a business model canvas, and then progress to a full commercialization plan and pitch deck. The goals of the Launchpad are to validate product-market fit and to hopefully formalize the venture and launch.
TIMELINE
Applications are due TODAY
Accepted teams will be notified by May 16th
Program runs from May 29th-July 31st
Demo day will be hosted in September

The Alex. Brown Center has an opportunity for students who are passionate about entrepreneurship! We are hiring Student Entrepreneurship Ambassadors, also referred to
as SEAs!
SEAs will help engage the entrepreneurship community at UMBC through events and campus-wide programming. Members of the group will serve as the student voice of the Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (ABCEI), and will be advocates for entrepreneurship programs across campus. The deadline to apply is Friday, April May 9th.
