Choice Program Director LaMar Davis Speaks Out on Youth Violence through WYPR, Baltimore Sun

LaMar Davis, director of The Choice Program at UMBC, visited Midday with Dan Rodricks on September 11 to remember four Choice Program participants who were killed in Baltimore this year and discuss youth violence. The Choice Program works with youth who have been in contact with the juvenile justice system, providing intensive mentorship and teaching job skills.

In the interview, Davis reflected on the tragic deaths of Najee Thomas, 14, Keith Powell, 17, Timothy Hall, 15, and Adrian Gilliard, 17, remembering their lives and dreams, and describing their involvement with The Choice Program. He also discussed the systematic social and economic inequalities that lead to violence and how communities need to work together to solve these complex issues.

Davis also wrote an op-ed in The Baltimore Sun about the tragic deaths and called for holistic interventions to combat youth violence.

Dr. Derek Musgrove in the Philadelphia Tribune

An article published September 7 in The Philadelphia Tribune discusses the case of U.S. Rep. Chakka Fattah, a ten term representative from Philadelphia who is facing corruption allegations, charges and guilty pleas surrounding his family. George Derek Musgrove ’97, history, associate professor of history, is quoted in the article and discusses the case of Fattah Sr. and his son, Fattah Jr., explaining that children of Black political families often go into businesses connected to their parents’ political power.

“There is a much higher percentage of white political families that produce their wealth from non-government related private businesses than there are Black ones,” Musgrove told The Tribune. “The children of many Black political families reproduce their class position by going into business[es] that are somehow connected to their parents’ political power. This may make them more susceptible to investigators looking for influence peddling.”

Musgrove added: “These young men grow up with the privileges associated with their parents’ status and take them for granted. Their children did not necessarily have an organic connection to these communities and that can sometimes lead them to use these communities for their own gain. They tend to have the same opportunities for graft afforded their white peers but not the same political protections.”

Carlos Romero-Tamalas Receives DARPA Young Faculty Award

Dr. Carlos Romero-Talamas, a professor in the UMBC Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been recognized with a DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA) for his research in computational models of nuclear fusion technology.

The YFA program exists "to identify and engage rising research stars in junior faculty positions at U.S. academic institutions." Of receiving this award, Dr. Romero-Talamas said "This allows us to explore a type of self-organized magnetized plasma, the spheromak, for operating modes that would lead to a thermonuclear fusion reactor design with significant reductions in size, cost, and engineering complexity over the leading concept, the tokamak."

Nuclear fission power plants are in common use around the world and operate by splitting apart relatively heavy atoms, producing lighter elements. Fusion works in the opposite way, by deriving energy from fusing atoms together to form heavier elements. All stars, including our Sun, produce energy from fusion. Stars are able to do this because massive amounts of gravity compress a star's matter. Creating the conditions for fusion within a human-engineered device on Earth could allow humanity to transcend our dependence on fossil fuels. Fusion energy research has led to several types of devices being proposed, such as tokomaks, spheromaks, and stellerators. Dr. Romero-Talamas is working to advance computational models which predict the flow of matter within spheromaks. Compared to other fusion energy schemes, the spheromak offers a simpler vessel shape, such as a cylinder, and the plasma is contained by internally created magnetic fields, avoiding the need for expensive external coils linking the
