June IEEE Computer Issue Devoted to Mobile Security

<Tagline>Mobile security? Of course my mobile device is secure.</Tagline>

Computer, the flagship publication of the IEEE Computer Society, is a monthly publication aimed at computing professionals. Their June, 2014 issue features mobile app security. It should be available from their site in the next several days: http://www.computer.org/portal/web/computingnow/computer (accessible to members, and to the UMBC community from campus IP addresses)

Here's info from the e-mail promo:

Mobile App Security
Computing's relatively rapid migration to mobile platforms has helped redefine our devices' role in our everyday lives. These advances have led to a correspondingly rapid shift in attacks and malware on mobile platforms. This issue’s five cover features explore new mobile application security strategies and models to contain and diminish these threats.

Thwarting Obfuscated Malware via Differential Fault Analysis
Guillermo Suarez-Tangil, Juan E. Tapiador, Flavio Lombardi, and Roberto Di Pietro describe how detecting malware in mobile applications is increasingly complex as malware developers are better able to hide or obfuscate malicious components. Alterdroid is a dynamic-analysis tool that compares behavioral differences between an original app and numerous automatically generated versions of it containing carefully injected modifications.

    RootGuard: Protecting Rooted Android Phones
Though popular for achieving full operation functionality, rooting Android phones opens these devices to significant security threats. Yuru Shao, Xiapu Luo, and Chenxiong Qian describe how RootGuard offers protection from malware with root privileges while providing user flexibility and control.

Smart AppStore: Expanding the Frontiers of Smartphone Ecosystems
According to Félix Gómez Mármol, Gregor Rozinaj, Sebastian Schumann, Ondrej Lábaj, and Juraj Kačur, Smart AppStore offers five important features for today's smartphone users: biometric authentication, multilevel authorization, gesture recognition and navigation, user-tailored reputation scores, and identity management.

Securing the "Bring Your Own Device" Paradigm
The current mobile application distribution model cannot cope with the complex security requirements of the emerging "bring your own device" (BYOD) paradigm. Alessandro Armando, Gabriele Costa, Luca Verderame, and Alessio Merlo explain how a secure metamarket architecture supports the definition and enforcement of BYOD policies and offers a promising prototype implementation tested under realistic conditions.

Security in the Firefox OS and Tizen Mobile Platforms
Olga Gadyatskaya, Fabio Massacci, and Yury Zhauniarovich explore how emerging mobile platforms Firefox OS and Tizen are learning from Android's security successes and trying to avoid its limitations. Although these platforms offer largely novel solutions, they can still learn from one another.

    PLUS

Computing and the Law: Privacy and Big Data
Big data's explosive growth has prompted the US government to release new reports that address the issues—particularly related to privacy—as reviewed by Brian M. Gaff, Heather Egan Sussman, and Jennifer Geetter in this month's column.

Computer's June issue also includes columns on Cloud Computing, Entertainment Computing, Computing in Education, and many others.

Summer ASB/Service-Learning leadership training conference

<Tagline>Thinking about doing ASB next year? Help plan a trip!</Tagline>

Hello UMBCserves!

If you're considering to apply to be an ASB trip leader or participant for the '14-'15 school year (or just getting some good training on service and volunteerism leadership) there is an FREE opportunity for you to attend an alternative spring break training conference later in this summer, Sun. July 27 - Fri. August 1.

The conference is being put on by an organisation called Break Away (www.alternativebreaks.org) and they'll be preparing future ASB student leaders from multiple universities on planning and facilitation of ASB trips. There is no cost for you to attend and I think it'll help you and I put together great UMBC ASB trips next year or if your plans change, these same skills can be transferred to many areas of student leadership at UMBC.

The theme for the conference is "Collaborative Approaches to Securing Food for All" and it's being cohosted by UMBC and CCBC-Catonsville. The conference's full name is: Alternative Break Citizenship Schools (ABCs). You can find out more here:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1mZJb0pw5yvV4EUg1f2NGXttr4EzkoG3aUpRLezZWwo4/viewform

If you're interested in being an ASB trip leader or participant but cannot attend, don't worry! Attendance at this conference is not mandatory for ASB leadership or participation next year. If you are interested, you don't have to fill out the above form yet, just reply in an email to, me, mzachar1@umbc.edu, with a paragraph explaining your interest and why this opportunity is a good fit for your leadership aspirations next year. Please respond by email by Friday, June 27th at the latest.

Thanks! -mark

Innovative Maryland Businesses Honored at 14th Annual Incubator Company of the Year Awards

COLUMBIA, Md. (June
11, 2014) – The Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO),
Lonza Group LTD, Saul Ewing LLP, Maryland Department of Business and
Economic Development (DBED), McGladrey LLP, M&T Bank, BioMaryland
Center and the Maryland Business Incubation Association (MBIA) announced
the winners of the 14th annual Incubator Company of the Year
Awards on Tuesday evening at the American Visionary Art Museum in
Baltimore, Md. The awards, chosen by a selection committee of regional
industry leaders and early-stage investors, recognized the achievements
of current and graduate companies within Maryland’s incubators.

“The Maryland Incubator Company of the Year Awards recognizes
ultimate achievement within our State’s business incubator network,”
said DBED Secretary Dominick Murray. “In the fourteenth year of this
awards program, companies are continuing to develop groundbreaking
technologies, services and products that are not only changing the way
we think in Maryland, but the world. We congratulate this year’s winners
and look forward to watching them grow in the mainstream marketplace.”

Winning companies were selected based on their goals and success in
achieving their objectives. Judges considered factors such as technology
or product development, intellectual property, increase in employee
numbers, growth in revenue or earnings, engagement of significant
customers and strategic partners, receipt of awards or grants,
attraction of outside investors, innovation, self-sufficiency, impact on
the region and usage of the incubator’s services.

In addition to the Incubator Company of the Year awards, Frank
Bonsal, Jr., special partner at New Markets Venture Partners, was
recognized at the awards ceremony with the Robert A. Spar Hall of Fame
Award for his contributions to entrepreneurship and the success of
Maryland incubators. Mr. Bonsal has more than 30 years of exemplary
venture capital experience, including co-founding New Enterprise
Associates (NEA), a venture capital firm, and is an advisor to multiple
    organizations.

“The 2014 Incubator Company of the Year winners represent some of the
most innovative startups in the State,” said Rob Rosenbaum, president
and executive director of TEDCO. “TEDCO provided early-stage funding and
grants to several of these honorees and we are proud of their success.
We congratulate these talented companies and look forward to watching
    them thrive.”

“The Maryland Business Incubation Association is delighted to be a
partner with ICOY, the premiere annual event highlighting the great
accomplishments of Maryland’s incubator companies and incubator graduate
companies,” said Robert Snyder, president of MBIA and Incubator Manager
of Bethesda Green. “We congratulate all of the 2014 ICOY winners for
    gaining this competitively won recognition.”

“These celebrated companies highlight our State’s expansive incubator
system,” said Gianna Arnold, partner at Saul Ewing. “Incubators provide
entrepreneurs with resources and support they need to thrive, as well
as inspire these companies to develop technology and consumer driven
solutions to grow Maryland’s economy. We are proud to recognize these
honorees on their accomplishments and look forward to their future

Prof. Denise Meringolo on YouTube!

Denise Meringolo, associate professor of history and director of the public history program at UMBC, recently sat down for an interview about her collaborative methods for training the next generation of public historians.

In this spring 2014 interview with Dinah Winnick, UMBC’s acting director of communications, Meringolo discusses the course that she designed through a BreakingGround grant. The BreakingGround program at UMBC was established in 2012 to foster innovative scholarship and provide opportunities for civic engagement beyond the university campus. Winnick notes that the grant program seeks to create projects that have a long-lasting and tangible impact in the community.

The university’s BreakingGround initiative resonates with Meringolo’s definition of public history. Rather than traditional, academic history with simply a different audience, Meringolo believes, “Public history is really an expression of public service.” She explains that teaching public history is all about “how the tools of history can be put to use not simply for a community but with them, embedded in their needs.”

Meringolo says that her goal for this BreakingGround project is for students to consider the role of public history in community development and historic preservation. Working with and for local organizations like Baltimore Heritage, a nonprofit preservation organization, students in Meringolo’s courses research and produce original content for the Explore Baltimore Heritage website and app. One cohort developed a tour of downtown Baltimore’s West Side while another produced stories about the city’s famed Druid Hill Park.

Through this collaboration, Meringolo and her students became aware that the public historian’s approach is not always what the partner envisions. For example, Baltimore Heritage’s audience of architecturally minded preservation experts anticipate reading a linear history of individual structures, not necessarily theme-driven stories about community residents. Fruitful collaboration required flexibility from Meringolo, her students, and the partners as well—which they have practiced through several rounds of the course.

Meringolo describes the benefit of this type of project as being two-fold: not only do students leave the
course with a finished product for their professional portfolio, but they also gain awareness about issues facing historic communities in Baltimore City. Many students gain a sense of empowerment and investment in the city as a result of their research, continuing to communicate with Meringolo about these neighborhoods long after the semester has ended.

To learn more about Meringolo’s work, read her 2013 post on the BreakingGround blog, “Beyond Formal Politics: Scholarship as Civic Engagement.”
