New Campus Entrance Project Underway This Summer

This summer marks the beginning of the New Campus Entrance Project, a construction plan to transform the entrance to campus to reflect the growth, innovation and creativity of our university. Our goal is to create a distinctive, attractive and safe campus entrance that embraces the vision of a welcoming experience through upgrades to the roadways and intersections of UMBC Blvd., pedestrian pathways, and parking and visitor access areas.

As we begin this transformation in early June, 2014, several areas across campus will be directly impacted over the course of the summer. Specifically, those areas are the Plaza, the Administration Garage and UMBC Blvd.

    The Plaza (June 6 – Aug. 15)

Beginning on or about June 6, 2014, we will be shutting down the area between the RAC and the Administration building. Signage will be posted to guide you safely and effectively through pedestrian and vehicle paths around the work area. No buildings will be closed, but we recommend using alternate entrances during this construction period.

Administration Garage

Beginning on or about June 6, 2014, we will begin constructing new parking and garage ramp access on the east side of the Administration Garage (the side closest to the tennis courts). We do not anticipate any changes to traffic or pedestrian pathways until later in the fall. We will inform you in greater detail at that time.

UMBC Blvd.

Work will begin later this summer on the west side of UMBC Blvd. (outgoing traffic). Please note that street side parking on UMBC Blvd. will no longer be available, as the east side of the road will become two-way traffic. Please follow posted signage for any detours.

For more information, including updates on the campus entrance project schedule and sketches of the construction plan, please visit the Campus Entrance website. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.

Dr. Belay Demoz Appointed Director of UMBC’s Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET)

Dr. Belay Demoz has been appointed as Professor in the Department of Physics and Director of the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET), a cooperative center between UMBC and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). Dr. Demoz’s appointment will be effective August 1, 2014.

Dr. Demoz joins the UMBC community from Howard University where he held the position of Professor of Physics and Atmospheric Science. Prior to his appointment at Howard University, he served as a Physical Scientist at NASA GSFC from 2002 to 2008. Between 1998 and 2002 he held the position of Research Assistant Professor at UMBC and JCET.

Dr. Demoz received his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Physics and his M.Sc. in Atmospheric Science from the Desert Research Institute at the University of Nevada-Reno in 1992, after completing his B.Sc. in Physics with a Minor in Mathematics at Asmara University, Eritrea, East Africa, 1984.

The appointment of Dr. Demoz concludes a successful international search for a capable leader to continue building on the strong relationships between UMBC and NASA. Dr. Demoz’s prior experience at NASA Goddard and with JCET makes him an ideal choice to lead JCET into the future. Dr. Demoz will continue on the work of Dr. Raymond Hoff, who served as JCET Director from 1999 until 2011. Since 2011, Ms. Danita Eichenlaub has been the Administrative Director for JCET. She will work closely with Dr. Demoz to continue strengthening JCET’s research and academic mission.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all of the members of the Search Committee. Their commitment and hard work represents a strong contribution to secure the continued success of UMBC’s relationship with NASA and the future growth of UMBC as a research university.

Established in 1995 under the Direction of Dr. Harvey Melfi, JCET operates under a cooperative agreement between UMBC and NASA GSFC. JCET meets the common interest of UMBC and GSFC to develop new technology for environmental remote sensing. JCET staff includes tenured faculty, research faculty, research support staff, students and administrative support staff. Currently there are 17 research faculty members with affiliations to academic departments at UMBC and 5 UMBC tenured faculty members with a JCET affiliation. JCET also includes 19 additional research faculty members and four scientific support staff. JCET faculty are affiliated with the Departments of Physics, Geography and Environmental Systems, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Mathematics & Statistics and Education. Both graduate and undergraduate students work with JCET faculty. JCET’s research focuses on themes, which align with NASA’s Earth Science Interests: engineering, mesoscale atmospheric processes, climate and radiation, atmospheric chemistry and dynamics, hydrospheric and biospheric sciences, and solar system science including geodesy and geophysics.

UMBC launches new Green Office Progam

<Tagline>Both staff&faculty are leading green improvements in offices</Tagline>

On Wednesday, May 28th UMBC's Green Office Program launched after a year of development and piloting. Each of the 30 seats were filled with staff and faculty for a training on how to implement the program in offices across campus. The training emphasized not only adopting green practices, but also how individuals can serve as trained liaisons and secure commitments from their offices to sustainable practices.

The Green Office Program is modeled from existing programs at many other higher ed institutions and has been developed by UMBC's sustainability coordinator, sustainability interns, and a Green Office Work Group under the oversight of the UMBC Climate Change Task Force.

The Green Office Program was designed to support sustainability champions who are motivated to follow best practices in energy conservation, waste minimization, and sustainable transportation. These champions are trained and equipped with a checklist, toolkit and support.

The goals of the Green Office launch and luncheon were to introduce liaisons, recognize the efforts UMBC has been making towards a greener campus, explain the steps to green office certification, review the green office checklist and toolkit, and to discuss the purpose of the program.

Because so many of our habits and shaped by our peers and our personal self- perception/identity, making a public commitment such as that of the green office program offers a catalyst for lasting change. Not only that, many of the steps in the green office checklist are one-time actions that have long term benefits, such as removing barriers, inserting prompts, and updating settings to easily establish environmentally responsible practices consistently throughout departments. The checklist included three categories: saving energy, reducing waste and driving less.

The program is designed to be short, simple and easy to implement as a basic first step, all while still making a huge difference in our campus footprint. In the future, UMBC plans to add higher levels of Green Office certification for those willing to adopt even greener practices, says Tanvi Gadhia, UMBC's sustainability coordinator.

In 2007, President Hrabowski first signed the American Colleges and Universities Climate Commitment, with the goal of carbon neutrality. Bold steps have been taken from improving efficiency, designing green buildings and investing in renewable energy. However, an estimated 40% of energy is used in our buildings and 15% on lighting alone. By taking short and simple steps such as turning off lights each night in our offices, using hibernate setting on our computers and equipment, offices across campus can help make a difference together.

Please join us in thanking and congratulating the many diverse offices that were represented at our Green Office Program Launch, and those who participated in the pilot program:
