UMBC's Launchpad Accelerator - Application Due May 7th!
The UMBC Launchpad accelerator is a 9-week cohort-based program where ventures prepare to go from pre-launch to launch, or for early-stage companies, create a pathway to accelerate growth.
Founders who are ready to fully commit to launching their venture and have validated their idea as an opportunity should apply. Participants are awarded up to $8,000 in non-dilutive funding for seed capital ($4k after 1 month and $4k at the end). Mentors will be assigned to each team.
Teams will perform deep customer discovery, develop a business model canvas, and then progress to a full commercialization plan and pitch deck. The goals of the Launchpad are to validate product-market fit and to hopefully formalize the venture and launch.
TIMELINE
Applications are due May 7th
Accepted teams will be notified by May 16th
Program runs from May 29th-July 31st
Demo day will be hosted in September

Roommate and apartment needed near UMBC
Hi everyone,
I’m a PhD student starting at UMBC from Fall 2025, and I’m planning to arrive in the U.S. around the first week of August. I know it's a bit early but I’m currently looking for a roommate and a place to stay.
I’m ideally looking for a 2 bed, 2 bath apartment, with a budget of $750 per person. But I'm also open to 2 bed, 1 bath options if it helps reduce costs—my budget for that would be $650 per person. I am expecting utilities to be an extra $60 - $80, but would definitely be happy if it is included also.

Zheng to Receive 2025 Elsevier/JQSRT Goody Award
Congratulations to Jianyu (Kevin) Zheng (613/UMBC), who has been selected to receive the 2025 Elsevier/JQSRT Richard M. Goody Award, in recognition of
his outstanding achievements and contributions in the fields of atmospheric
radiation and remote sensing as an early-career scientist. The award will be
presented at the 21st Electromagnetic and Light Scattering Conference (ELS-XXI)
in Milazzo, Italy on June 23-27, 2025, and it will consist of a certificate and a monetary prize.
Established in 2013 by the Elsevier award program, this
prestigious Elsevier/JQSRT (Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative
Transfer) award is named after Richard M. Goody, whose pioneering research has
had a profound and long-lasting impact on the disciplines of atmospheric
radiation, remote sensing, and climate science. The Goody award is competed through a
nomination process for outstanding early-career scientists internationally. The
evaluation from the selection committee is based on the overall achievements of
the qualified nominee in the field of Atmospheric Radiation and Remote Sensing
at their current career stage.
Dr. Zheng is a postdoctoral research associate who
earned his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Physics from UMBC in December 2023. His
research specializes in satellite remote sensing of atmospheric aerosols, with
his particular expertise in mineral dust characterization using both passive
and active satellite sensors. His research focuses on developing novel
techniques that combine thermal infrared and Lidar observations to retrieve
dust properties. Currently, Dr. Zheng is developing comprehensive multi-decadal
remote-sensing observations of dust for earth science research and
applications. His work has been recognized with several awards, including the
Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award from NASA GSFC’s Climate and Radiation
Laboratory, and the outstanding student presentation awards at AGU 2019 Fall
Meeting and AMS 2022 Annual Meeting. He is an active member of the scientific
community and was recently selected for the 2024 AMS Early Career Leadership
Academy Cohort.

Join us to explore how storytelling is fundamental to human experience and understanding. It also forms the basis for qualitative methodologies like ethnography and narrative inquiry. In the context of an interdisciplinary and multi-sited research project, researchers from Branching Out will explore how ‘tree’ stories enable us to understand the social and cultural value of trees.
The Imaging Research Center will host "Virtual Trees" at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. as part of this presentation (ITE, 1st floor).
Alma Solarte-Tobon is a Research Associate and Doctoral Researcher in the Storytelling Academy at Loughborough University. She brings a deep experience in community arts, and serves as the Creative Producer for City Arts in Nottingham and Creative Director for the Nottingham Poetry Festival.
Michael Wilson is a Professor of Drama and the Director of the Storytelling Academy at Loughborough University. He has published extensively on storytelling, and he has recently turned his attention to the use of storytelling as a framework for public policy development, especially in relation to health and environmental challenges. He has recently been named as the new UNESCO chair for Sustainability and Storytelling.

FIRETALKS
On Monday, May 5th, the club leadership will hand the meeting over to club members for a “FireTalks” meeting! Participants will prepare and present a 10-minute talk on a technical topic of their choosing! The talks will be back-to-back, rapid-fire style!
There will be a prize for the best one! We only have time for 8 participants, so if you’re interested, sign up ASAP! The deadline to sign up will be Sunday, May 4th, at 11:59 PM.
TRYOUTS
Tryouts will be held this Friday and Saturday! YOU ONLY HAVE TO ATTEND ONE TRY-OUT DATE.
Sign-Ups Close Thursday, May 1st at 11:59PM!
Tryouts are primarily used to determine placement on competition teams. However, tryouts are also a great opportunity to learn and test skills, so give it a shot; even if you feel you might not get placed, you don’t know unless you try! To participate in tryouts, complete the Team Entry Form AND Tryout Application!

END-OF-SEMESTER CELEBRATION
At the final club meeting on Monday, May 12th, all students are invited to take a break before exams. We provide free pizza, drinks, candy, music, and video games. We will also announce winners of our CyberPaws CTF, hand out prizes, and recognize graduating members with cords!
