At Mobile World Congress, the Facebook CEO had no big Internet expansion idea—and had no business talking about infant mortality.
At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last evening, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg offered news that his company was helping out with app engineering for a pilot project delivering educational materials in Rwanda. This is laudable. But he also suggested he was a serious player in expanding global Internet access. This is misleading. And he fluidly conflated Facebook’s efforts with the saving of children’s lives. This is offensive.

UMBC Students Testify in Maryland House Committee Hearing
On Friday, February 21, three UMBC students represented the Shriver Center’s Public Service Scholars programs in front of the Maryland State House of Delegates. Travis Bell (Political Science, Psychology), Christina Smith (Global Studies, Modern Languages and Linguistics), and Kaitlyn Golden (Psychology) testified in favor of HB536 in front of the Ways and Means Committee. HB536 proposes to expand the Walter Sondheim Jr. Public Service Summer Internship Scholarship Program from a summer program, to one offered in Summer, Fall, and Spring semesters.
These students, all of whom are Sondheim Public Affairs scholars, shared their experiences in public service, the value of these programs, and the need to grant year-round access to these programs for students across Maryland.
Please join me in congratulating these students on their job well done, and thanking them for advocating for experiences that engage students in public service.
