myUMBC Answers: AI-Powered Search Bar Updates

<Tagline>Providing answers that are unique to you!</Tagline>

In early February, the myUMBC team launched my UMBC Answers, an AI-driven search bar to improve experiences for students, faculty, and staff while ensuring security and privacy. Now, all campus members have been enrolled in this new feature! It helps provide fast, accurate answers to common student questions. The common questions focus on the student experience, but future updates will incorporate resources for faculty and staff. There is an option to opt out if users prefer.

Interactive Feedback Loop:A sophisticated mechanism allows users to contribute qualitative assessments of answer accuracy. University technology architect Collier Jones emphasizes a critical advisory: "While our AI system provides remarkable support, it is not infallible. Students must exercise due diligence by independently verifying critical information."

Privacy and Security: The system has been meticulously designed with privacy protocols, ensuring the protection of sensitive student information throughout every interaction.

What can it do?

The platform empowers students by providing rapid, secure access to essential personal information, including:

These three affinity events will honor and celebrate the achievements of UMBC's outstanding community members and graduating students.

Thursday, May 15, 2025

During the gathering, we’ll enjoy food together, we’ll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who’ve contributed to their success.

Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance.

SGA Election Rule Violation Complaint

The Election Board recently received an election complaint against the Eli Gendleman/Shriya Menon Presidential campaign in reference to a social media post that was published by the Gendleman/Menon campaign in collaboration with the @umbcpolice Instagram account in which the candidates posed with UMBC’s comfort dog Chip and stated that “Chip thinks you deserve the college experience. Get what you deserve - vote us for Exec prez and VP". The complaint alleged violations of the following election rules:

Rule 17: The use of resources owned by SGA or any other UMBC office for campaign purposes is prohibited, except when the resources are available for public use. Campaigning or preparing campaign materials in the SGA Office is prohibited. Examples of prohibited conduct within the SGA office include using SGA telephones to solicit votes, wearing visible paraphernalia supporting candidate(s), and using supplies from a UMBC office to create advertising. Campaigning during SGA Open Meetings, including Senate or Finance Board meetings, is prohibited.

After careful review of the complaint and the 2025 election board rules, the Election Board did not find any evidence of rule-breaking. The Election Board voted to dismiss this complaint. As stated in Rule 17, “The use of resources owned by SGA or any other UMBC office for campaign purposes is prohibited, except when the resources are available for public use.” Considering that Officer Chip is labeled as UMBC’s comfort dog and that any student is welcome to take or post pictures with Chip and tag or invite to collaborate with Chip’s own Instagram account, this action taken by the Gendleman/Menon ticket is protected by Rule 17’s language of “except when the resources are available for public use”.

During their investigation, the Election Board contacted UMBC’s Community Outreach Sergeant, who takes care of Chip and her appearances around campus. Sergeant Cheatem confirmed that any student or candidate is able to take pictures with Chip, post them, and tag or collaborate/be posted on the campus comfort dog’s own Instagram page, which happens to have the handle @umbcpolice. Despite the handle, the Instagram account essentially functions as a fan-page for Chip, as the account is designated as a public figure and not used for any official UMBC police communications. Additionally, the Election Board discovered during their investigation that another candidate running for a different position within SGA had similarly taken pictures with Chip and co-published the post on Instagram with Chip’s account, indicating that the resources are in fact available for public use and the same actions could be taken by any candidate who requested to collaborate. Sergeant Cheatem also stated that Chip is considered available for public promotional use as the larger UMBC community’s comfort dog, and the only limiting factor of this is her schedule.

The Election Board wants to reiterate that any student who believes that they have witnessed an Election Rules violation should report a complaint to the Election Board, remembering that complaints must be filed by 48 hours after an alleged violation is discovered OR by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 18th-- whichever is earliest. Thank you.

Introducing UMBC’s Travel Advisory Board

<Tagline>Partnering with campus to shape a smoother, smarter travel e</Tagline>

To help guide the successful rollout of SAP Concur Travel at UMBC, we’ve launched the Travel Advisory Board (TAB)—a group of faculty and staff from across campus who bring valuable insight and feedback to the table. TAB was created to ensure the new travel system meets the needs of our community, improves current processes, and supports a smooth transition.

TAB members serve as liaisons to their departments, review key implementation documents, and help shape how Concur will be introduced and used across campus. Their input is essential to aligning the system with the way we work at UMBC.

We’re grateful to the inaugural members of TAB for their time, expertise, and ongoing collaboration:

Bryan Casey, AVP and Controller, Financial Services (Chair)

David Di Maria, Assistant Vice Provost for International Education

Adam Drutz-Hannahs, Assistant Manager, Financial Services

Catherine Manalansan, Administrative Assistant, JCET

Charles Nicholas, Professor, CSEE

Ken Schreihofer, Director, Business Systems, DoIT

Desiree Stonesifer, Business Manager, Administrative SSC

Margo Young, Director, Earth & Space Research Administration (ESRA)

TAB has already begun shaping key decisions that will directly impact the travel experience at UMBC. As implementation continues, the board will play a vital role in keeping the community informed, gathering feedback, and helping address questions or challenges along the way.

Have questions or want to stay in the loop? Feel free to reach out to any of the board members above—they’re here to help make Concur a success for all of us.
