According to a new Gallup poll 60% Americans believe we need a third political party.

It’s the largest majority of Americans to have expressed an interest in a third party in a decade with 52% of self-identified Republicans and 49% of self-identified Democrats supporting the idea.

The desire for change isn’t really all that surprising given the recent government shutdown and the inability for Republicans and Democrats to coexist.

But, like wanting a Ferrari, just because you want a third party doesn’t mean you will get one. The Democrats and the Republicans have dominated the system for over 150 years now. You can bet they will fight tooth and nail to retain the status quo. Plus…Others have tried the third party route…and failed (Hello Ralph Nader).

The courage of Malala Yousafzai continues to amaze us all.

After surviving an attack by the Pakistani Taliban in 2012 in which she was shot in the head and neck, Malala Yousafzai went on to become a steadfast advocate for women’s education.

Currently 16 years old, Malala has spoken in front of the United Nations, blogged for BBC Urdu, released her own book, and was recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.  

It was only a matter of time before Malala made her way to Washington, DC.

President Barack Obama invited Malala to the White House, where she met the first family and talked about current issues.  But Malala made the most of the Oval Office photo-op by raising her concerns to the president over his administration’s use of drones.

I thanked President Obama for the United States’ work in supporting education in Pakistan and Afghanistan and for Syrian refugees.  I also expressed my concerns that drone attacks are fueling terrorism.  Innocent victims are killed in these acts, and they lead to resentment among the Pakistani people.  If we refocus efforts on education it will make a big impact.

Confronting the leader of the free world on his counter-terrorism and foreign policies, in his office and in front of his family, takes a special kind of courage.  

Not surprisingly, the official White House statement about the meeting conveniently left Malala’s message out, instead taking the opportunity to reaffirm solidarity with Malala and the Pakistani people.

Malala had an opportunity that most never come close to having: a 1 on 1 with the president of the United States.

It seems Congress is not the only embarrassing thing in Washington these days.  Take the Washington Redskins…

We are not talking about their on-the-field issues… it’s their name: Redskins. It is getting some folks red hot.

The Washington Redskins are one of the oldest franchises in the National Football League.

When the team was founded in 1932, it was a different (and ugly) era with lawful segregation and discrimination. “Redskins” was adopted as team’s name ignoring the term has long been a racial slur for Native Americans.

0ver 80 years, there have been pleas from several Native American tribes to change the name of the storied Washington football franchise. A more organized movement has brought the issue to a head in recent weeks.

            Daniel Snyder, the owner of the franchise, bluntly said that the name “would never change”.

Last week, Mr. Snyder wrote a letter to fans explaining why they have stuck by the name and why he will not consider changing it. Fans, applauded his firm stance. Meanwhile a segment of the Native Americans still finds the term offensive.

So what do you think? Should the name be changed? Or is Redskins here to stay?
