Roy T. Meyers, Political Science, on NPR’s Morning Edition

On NPR’s Morning Edition today, Meyers noted that it’s hard to estimate the true cost of a shutdown:

For example, what does it cost the American people when you tell somebody who leads the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to plan for a shutdown rather than try to reduce or eliminate public health threats. To me, the cost there is the increased risk associated with not paying as much attention to public health.

The problem of diverted attention isn’t just felt in agencies — it has serious impacts for Congress itself, Meyers argues:

Think for example about immigration. After the last presidential election, a lot of people in Washington said, “Well, this is the year to have an immigration law.” Where is it? Well, there are still big issues there to resolve and one reason why they are not resolved is that Congress is spending far too much time fighting over this…

A Bad Case of Obamacare Hystrionics

ObamaCare is coming, and conservatives are not happy.

They are using a bizarre ad campaign to scare folks (including specifically college age students) into rejecting the new law.

This creepy ad by the conservative group Generation Opportunity is a response to the big changes coming to your health care on October 1.

Well ready or not, here they come!

Starting on that day, millions of uninsured Americans can begin to enroll in the health-care exchanges due to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or as we all like to call it, ObamaCare.

Conservatives are trying everything to stop it. Last Tuesday, Senator Ted Cruz in his famous filibuster (but not technically a filibuster) started reading Green Eggs and Ham and sharing wisdom from the TV show “Duck Dynasty” to delay majority leader Harry Reid from stripping the bill that would defund Obamacare. The most baffling part? Cruz supported the bill he was filibustering and a vote would be taken no matter what.

After 21 hours of speaking, Cruz left the floor which left Reid with nothing to say except it was “a big waste of time.”

While Cruz was trying to defund the ACA, Obama was in New York discussing the benefits of the law. He stated that Americans, even if they have pre-existing conditions, will be able to access health insurance. The ACA will also cap companies’ health insurance prices.

With all this chaos in Washington, it has left Americans with nothing but uncertainty. What do you think about the ACA?
