Kimberly Moffitt, American Studies, on The Marc Steiner Show

Kimberly Moffitt joins panelists on The Marc Steiner Show to continue the ongoing discussion on the mass shooting tragedy at the Washington, D.C. Naval Yard, last Monday. The panelists, who also include Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, E.R. Shipp, and Dr. Richard Vatz, professor, Towson University, shared thoughts on the speculative and often sensational media reaction to tragic events in the age of the 24-hour news cycle. “This was a good news day for media because there was so much to talk about, so much to speculate on. I found much of the news coverage to be reactionary and sensational,” said Moffitt. …

DoIT Recommends Changes In Clicker Channel Settings

<Tagline>Reduces likelihood of interference with wireless network</Tagline>

The Division of Information Technology has been working with Turning Technologies to determine the optimum channel for clicker use so as avoid conflict with our campus wireless network, which was greatly enhanced this summer.

As a result of this review, please be advised that DoIT changed the Turning Point clicker channels on lecture hall computers on Friday afternoon, September 19. The new channel will be posted on the PC monitor and there will also be a sign facing the students. The channel was changed to reduce the possibility of RF interference with the system.

DoIT set the receivers in the lecture halls to channel 25 except ITE102 (LH8) which was set to channel 50. The reason for setting LH8 to a different channel is because of the proximity to LH7.

Instructors using their own receiver and laptop should select a channel between 74-82.

Turning Technologies has reviewed our recommendation and concurred.

Instructors:

To change/verify the channel on a computer (also found in Turning Point documentation):

1. Select the Polling tab in the TP software

2. The Receiver icon is located on the upper gray bar. If the PC channel does not match the posted channel, click on the icon.

3. Select the recommended channel. Laptop TP users should use a channel between 74 and 82.

4. Close the window.

Students:

To change the channel on a clicker (also found in Turning Point documentation):

1. Press the CH or Channel button (older response cards have a 'Go' button).

2. Enter the two digit channel for your location.

3. Press CH, Channel, or 'Go' again.

4. When the ResponseCard receives the new channel, the the light will turn green.

The reason for this change is that clickers use 1MHz channels within the 2.4GHz frequency band. On campus, we primarily use channels 1, 6 and 11 for wireless, which is occupied by the clicker channels 1-23, 26-48, and 51-73. To ensure that there is minimal interference, Turning Technologies recommends that devices are programmed on channels 24, 25, 49, 50, and 60-82.

What's Your Ideal Community?

<Tagline>Residential Life wants to hear from you! Join the discussion</Tagline>

50 years ago, when UMBC was a being
established, the administration did not lay any cement sidewalks. Instead,
students created trails on the grounds as they found routes to their various
classes and activities, and the University laid sidewalks on the students’
chosen tracks. It is in this democratic legacy, that we invite you to be a part
of reviewing the paths past students laid for you as members of the UMBC
    residential community.

This August, the Residential Life
Office began a review of the UMBC Community Living Principles. The 4 existing
Community Living Principles were created by residential students 10 years ago
as guiding principles for how we live and learn together as an on-campus
    community.

As we undertake the review of these
principles, our charge is twofold: To work in collaboration with students to
better understand what our community values, and who we become as a result of
    living these values together.

We encourage
you to lend your voice to this process, by attending the focus groups on
October 2nd and 3rd in your communities. Please also like our page on facebook,
instagram and twitter using the links below, to get updates, and a chance to
leave comments or participate in surveys. Visit our website: umbc.edu/reslife/living/CommunityLivingPrinciples to get updates on the process, and
view the final draft when it is available.

Laying a new
path requires work. Deliberate stepping to lay tracks in new terrain.
Ultimately, those who created the path leave not only an easier way, but an
expectation that others will follow in their footsteps. What path do you want
to lay? What does your ideal community look like? Start the discussion here.

Onboarding Techniques and Examples for Your New Users

When someone signs up on your website, or downloads your software, or installs your mobile app, it doesn’t immediately mean the person has already decided to use it.

You have a small window of opportunity to quickly introduce your app’s key features and teach a first-time user how the app works. The process of familiarizing a new user to your app is called onboarding.

Onboarding accomplishes these two things in the most efficient way possible:

Present the key benefits of using the app (the app’s value proposition)

Teach the app’s main features so new users can use the app immediately

General Onboarding Concepts

Onboarding generally starts as soon as the new user launches the app.

The onboarding process should be short because you want the user engaging with the app as quickly as possible.

Onboarding should only focus on the most important characteristics of the app.

Next, I will go over four common techniques used in onboarding and discuss some real-world examples that employ each technique.

Onboarding Technique: Tutorial

A common technique used in an onboarding process is presenting a short tutorial before bringing the new user into the app’s UI.

The tutorial is generally a sequential flow of static screens displaying the app’s key features and benefits.

Examples of the Tutorial Technique

Mailbox

Mailbox uses an interactive tutorial for the onboarding process so that new users can rapidly see the app’s unique features and learn how to use it.

Notice how the onboarding process doesn’t go into every single detail of the app; it only highlights and teaches you the app’s core benefits and features.

Pocket

Pocket’s onboarding experience is a series of static screens that demonstrate how to use the app.

Onboarding Technique: Walkthrough

Walkthroughs ensure that you avoid the blank slate problem by prompting users to fill out some necessary information in order for them to start using the app.

The downside with walkthroughs is that they are generally very rigid. The user can’t explore the interface without first completing the walkthrough. Thus, walkthroughs should conclude quickly or else you risk the possibility of having the user walk away from the app.

Examples of the Walkthrough Technique

Tumblr

Upon first interacting with Tumblr, the new user is prompted to input important information to ensure a customized user experience.

Pulse

Pulse has a shorter walkthrough than Tumblr because it only needs new users to choose their interests.

After the walkthrough, you’re free to explore the app by yourself.

What’s important to note is that the walkthroughs above are as short as possible; they only gather information that’s needed.

Onboarding Technique: Screen Overlay

Another popular technique used in the onboarding process is to draw attention to a key element of the UI and then providing helpful information about it.

The rest of the UI is deemphasized so that the focus is on the particular element being highlighted.

Related article: The Art of Distinction in Web Design shares concepts and strategies for drawing the user’s attention towards certain elements of a web page.

Unlike the tutorial or walkthrough techniques, screen overlays allow you to get users immediately inside the app after they sign in without having to present any preliminary screens.

With screen overlays, you can guide the user’s attention to the most important features, but you can also give them the option to explore the app on their own.

Example of the Screen Overlay Technique

Fitocracy

Fitocracy is a community-oriented app that helps you track your workouts. Though there are a lot of features in this app, the onboarding experience focuses only on a handful of key features, leaving it up to the user to discover everything else later on.

Onboarding Technique: Inline Hinting

Another technique you can use when onboarding a new user is to display hints while the person is exploring the app.

When they reach something that deserves more explanation, they are presented with useful information about it — a concept called progressive disclosure.

Inline hinting can give your users freedom to explore the app on their own and is not as obtrusive as other onboarding techniques.

Example of the Inline Hinting Technique

YouTube Capture

The onboarding experience of YouTube Capture starts with a quick tutorial. Then it uses inline hints to teach you the app’s UI. It’s a simple app and so progressive disclosure works very effectively in this case.

Conclusion

It’s important to note that you can use a combination of these techniques to craft your onboarding process. For example, you can start with a tutorial and then proceed to screen overlays and inline hinting when the user starts exploring and interacting with the app.

Onboarding is not always necessary. Many apps are so simple that an onboarding process is a burden for the user. Take for example a flashlight app:

The flashlight app above has only one function and one major UI element (a really big on/off button). Thus, an onboarding experience will only serve to slow down the user’s experience in this instance.

How to get the low-poly look

You may have noticed a common look in many images, not only in graphics and animations online, but also in magazines, and in television motion graphics, featuring low-detailed, faceted models, highly rendered, often with soft lighting effects.

It’s at once a reference to the early days of computer modeling and animation, but given a modern twist. This is the low-poly look.

In this article I’ll explore what the low-poly look is, some examples, and how you can create low-poly images. We’ll also look at some applications for this look in web designs, and also how this aesthetic may evolve online.

A reaction to photo-realistic 3D modelling

All 3D models are made up of polygons. The more polygons the model has, the more detailed the model will be. Usually, when rendering the image a technique is used to smooth the polygons and give the appearance of continuous surfaces.

The low-poly look is a conscious decision to use fewer polygons in the modelling stage, to create a simpler, more abstract model. This is then combined with a rendering style which rather than trying to smooth out the polygons, instead renders each of the facets of the model, creating a blocky, angular, look.

However, this does not mean that low-poly modeling is low-resolution. Sophisticated rendering techniques, lighting effects and shadowing are used to create a highly realistic appearance of the simplified object. This is why the low-poly look recalls paper-craft or origami, which has also had a renaissance in recent years.

Some of the best examples of the low-poly look are the works of Timothy J. Reynolds. There is also the Tumblr site Geo A Day by Jeremiah Shaw and Danny Jones, which continues to explore and push the boundaries of the low-poly aesthetic.

Perhaps the most complete realization of the low-poly look is the project The Paper Fox by Jeremy Kool, which developed from a modelling project into an interactive story app available for iOS. In the Paper Fox, Kool has deliberately chosen to emulate an origami look, by adding a crumpled paper texture to the objects, and by adding very thin edges.

In this work by Kristina Macurova, you can see that by using a shallow depth of field, the sense that these are physical models is enhanced. The depth of field can be determined in the camera settings in your 3D scene, or they can be applied afterwards in Photoshop.

Why is the low-poly look so popular?

The low-poly look can be seen as a reaction to the impersonal perfection of computer modeling. I think there is a very definite reaction against the over-polished lifelike 3D-modeling and rendering now possible in CGI. There is a desire for artists and designers to create something that does not try and mimic reality, but is more abstract, and tries to capture the essence of an object rather then represent it as realistically as possible.

There’s a historical precedent for this in art, at the start of the 20th century, when various expressionist movements emerged after the advent of photography; when photographs could capture an exact likeness, there was no need for art to do so; expressionism sought to convey feelings and sensations rather than accurate representations.

Fast forward to the 21st century and abstraction and expressionism is flourishing in the digital arts.

Getting started

Here is a quick tutorial to achieve the low-poly look, using the 3D software Cinema4D.

Create your objects using simple solids, such as spheres, cones and pyramids. The aim is not to model objects realistically, but to simplify as much as possible.

Set the segments property to sub-divide the surfaces of the objects. The more segments you add, the more facets the object will have.

Set the Phong properties of the object — this defines the smoothing of the object so you want to turn it off. In Cinema4D, either delete the phong tag or set the phong angle to 0 degrees to create a highly faceted appearance.

You can add deformations to the model to make it look not so geometrically perfect. You can do this manually by pushing and pulling individual nodes, or use a deformer such as the Displacer. Use the Noise shader to add random amounts of displacement to each vertex. You can adjust the strength to increase or decrease the amount of distortion.

Add materials to the object. When defining materials, you may want to add some bump mapping to provide some surface texture. Or you can keep your textures shiny and plasticy, with specular highlights — it all depends on the look you are going for.

Add backgrounds. Add a sky object, or use simple planes such as a background sky and as a floor plane. You can deform these in exactly the same way, if you wish.

Add lights. Subtle lighting effects will add atmosphere to your scene.

Render the object. Using Global Illumination render settings to create soft lighting. Adding an Ambient Occlusion adds a realistic grainy depth to shadows.

The key thing is to experiment until you come up with a look you are happy with. There are no rules other that the ones you set yourself. Aim to develop your own style by being consistent with the way you model, light and render your scenes.

The low-poly look illustration style

Even if you don’t have access to a 3D modelling program, you can still create low-poly images using 2D illustration software such as Illustrator or Photoshop.

The principle is actually pretty similar to modelling in 3D. Work with simple shapes to build up your scene. Decide where your light-source is, and apply shading to add depth and to create a faceted look. Texture effects and lighting effects can add interest and consistency to your scenes.

I really like the work of illustrator Matthew Lyons, who fuses simple geometric shapes with rough textures and atmospheric lighting. His illustrations combine strong compositions with a great mid-century design sense to create a retro-futuristic look — capturing the way the future looked in the past.

Low-poly web 3D

The low-poly aesthetic also lends itself delivering 3D content online. As the name tells-us, a low-poly count uses less polygons, requiring less data to model, render and animate, making it ideal for interactive realtime 3D online. There are a number of 3D web rendering technologies, with the best known being WebGL.

WebGL allows 3D content to be displayed onscreen through a browser with interactivity controlled through JavaScript. There are a number of JavaScript frameworks to do all the heavy lifting on this, with the most popular being three.js.

Other ways to add interactive 3D to the web involve the use of plug-ins such as Unity or Flash. There is a wide array of realtime Flash 3D engines including Away3D and Flare3D. Harnessing the 3D renderers built into Unity or Flash allows for better lighting effects than are currently capable in WebGL or Canvas rendering, but web renderers are catching up fast. For the latest in WebGL check out the work of three.js creator Mr. Doob.

The recent experimental film by Chris Milk, Rome — 3 dreams of black, uses WebGL to create an interactive music video experience with animated morphing creatures rendered in a low-poly faceted style. It is an open-source project allowing you to download the assets and rework the code, a great way to get into this exciting new area where 3D design meets web design. Whether this really fits the low-poly aesthetic in terms of rendering quality is up for discussion.

The retro-futuristic aesthetic

The low-poly look is part of what I call the retro-futuristic aesthetic (itself part of what might be called The New Aesthetic), in that it manages to hark back to the past and the future at the same time.

It appears perfectly suited to the current restraints of designing for the web. Whether it will outlast those restraints remains to be seen.

Is the low-poly look a visual cliche, or a passing trend? Does it suit current technology?
