Gloria Chuku, associate professor of Africana Studies and affiliate associate professor of both Gender and Women’s Studies and Language, Literacy and Culture, is editor of the new volume The Igbo Intellectual Tradition: Creative Conflict in African and African Diasporic Thought. Chuku’s publisher, MacMillan, shares:

In this groundbreaking collection, leading historians, Africanists, and other scholars document the life and work of eleven Igbo intellectuals who, educated within European traditions, came to terms with the dominance of European thought while making significant contributions to African intellectual history. Mediated through a variety of interpersonal relationships, debates, and changing ideas over the course of three centuries, the figures covered here – including Oluadah Equiano, Chinua Achebe, Nnamdi Azikewe, Mbonu Ojike, Kenneth Dike, and many others – struggled to balance the defense of Africa against Western imperial discourse with the development of an authentic African intellectual heritage, even as their identities were shaped by both forces.

Simon Ottenberg (University of Washington) writes of the volume, “This is a very useful pulling together of major historical figures in Igbo discourse, allowing for contrasts and comparisons of their lives, and showing that the Igbo contribution to African development has been considerable.”

Chuku is the author of Igbo Women and Economic Transformation in Southeastern Nigeria, 1900-1960, in addition to over 30 scholarly articles. Her research has focused primarily on Igbo history and culture, gender studies, and women and the political economies of Nigeria and Africa more broadly.

A panel discussion for the exhibition, Cyber In Securities, curated by Lisa Moren, visual arts, and presented by the Washington Project for the Arts will take place Saturday, September 21 at 3 pm in the Pepco Edison Place Gallery.

Participants in the panel, moderated by Moren, will include, Kevin Bankston, senior counsel and director of Free Expression Project, Center for Democracy and Technology; Heather Dewey-Hagborg, information artist and PhD candidate, electronic arts, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; David Rokeby, interactive sound and video installation artist; and UMBC faculty member, Anupam Joshi, computer science and electrical engineering, director of the Center for Cybersecurity.

“Cyber In Securities is an exhibition that addresses the growing concern among a cross-generational group of artists whose enthusiasm about new media is complicated by the suspicion that the good will of their shared digital consciousness is being used against them.”

Under the Affordable Care Act everyone who files a federal income tax form will soon be required to have health insurance or face a penalty. Open enrollment in the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange and similar exchanges across the nation begins on October 1. In the Baltimore Sun‘s “Picture of Health” blog, analysts from The Hilltop Institute at UMBC demystify this insurance requirement, explaining the penalty as well as exemptions, such as for individuals whose income is below a certain threshold or who can claim one of the exemptions specified in federal law (e.g., religious conscience, hardship).

Professor Tinoosh Mohsenin received a research award from the National Science Foundation to develop multi-physiological signal processing architectures for seizure detection. The award will provide $100,000 over a two year duration to support Dr. Mohsenin and her students in the Energy Efficient High Performance Computing Lab working on this project.

The research will explore an approach to overcome problems of sensor noise, false detection, and energy/power constraints by combining the analysis of multiple physiological signals through specialized hardware implementing a multi-layer classification technique comprised of signal processing and machine learning functions. The hybrid architecture will leverage common operations and communication patterns between digital signal processing and machine learning to support these computations more efficiently than traditional approaches. The prototype system will be evaluated for use in wearable seizure detection devices by using traces of EEG and other physiological sensor data obtained from the Epilepsy Center at University of Maryland Medical Center.

The research could significantly enhance the ability to robustly and efficiently monitor multi-physiological patient data and take appropriate actions. For epilepsy, it could enable automatic seizure detection and caregiver alerts, which are critical at night, when seizures can happen without someone to help nearby. Longer term potential impacts extend to human-centered cyber-physical systems, cyber-security, and unmanned vehicles.
