AFST Welcomes New Dept. Chair

Department of
    Africana Studies,

Tyson King-Meadows, Ph.D.

Beginning Fall 2013

Dr. Tyson D. King-Meadows is an
associate professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of
Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). He is also an affiliate of the Maryland
Institute for Policy Analysis and Research (MIPAR), an affiliate of the
Department of Public Policy, and a Faculty Fellow of the Honors College. He
received a B.A. in Political Science from North Carolina Central University and
a M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. His primary research interests concern African American political
behavior and attitudes, identity politics, race and representation, Congress,
and elections. His other research interests involve democratization and public
attitudes toward democracy in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. King-Meadows has been
involved in numerous community service and engagement, professional
development, and academic enrichment initiatives, ranging from the Shriver
Center Advisory Board, the President’s Commission for Women, and the McNair Scholars
Program to the Honors College Advisory Board, the URCAD Committee, and the
CAHSS Black Faculty Committee. Dr. King-Meadows has received a number of
teaching, service, and research awards, including a fellowship to the W. E. B.
Du Bois Institute for African American Research at Harvard University, a
Fulbright Scholar Award to Ghana, West Africa, a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral
Fellowship for a residency at the Center for African American Studies at
Princeton University, a residency as a Visiting Scholar at the Johns Hopkins
University Center for Africana Studies, a grant from the National Science
Foundation, and an American Political Science Association (APSA) Congressional
Fellowship. He has also served as an Alumni Ambassador of the Fulbright Scholar
Program. Dr. King-Meadows is active in the American Political Science
Association (APSA) and the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA). He has
served as president of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists
(NCOBPS) [from 2011 – 2013] and currently serves as its treasurer. Dr.
King-Meadows is particularly interested in exploring the impact of black
political engagement, civil rights law, identity group politics, and racial
representation on the black socioeconomic condition from the latter twentieth
century to present day. For example, see the recently released book When the
Letter Betrays the Spirit: Voting Rights Enforcement and African American
Participation from Lyndon Johnson to Barack Obama (Lexington Books, 2011). This
book draws from government data, legislative history, Supreme Court decisions,
survey results, and the 2006 reauthorization debate to examine how executive
and judicial discretion facilitates violations of the Voting Rights Act. While
challenging the executive-centered model of leadership on voting rights, this
book puts forth a Congress-centered leadership model that would satisfy the
goals of the black civil rights movement and give fuller support to the
Fifteenth Amendment. His next book (forthcoming from the University of
Minnesota Press) examines contemporary racial identity politics and the
senatorial and gubernatorial candidacies of black federal representatives. Dr.
King-Meadows’ next book length project examines the dynamics of racial group
identity politics in the public and congressional response to the 2009
nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Dr. King-Meadows is
also co-author with Thomas F. Schaller of Devolution and Black State
Legislators: Challenges and Choices in the Twenty-first Century (State
University of New York Press, 2006).

Deal of the week: Bundle Storm

When it comes to stock elements, you can’t have to many. Sure, it’s possible that you’ll collect more than you can use in a single career, but the important thing is to have a good body to choose from; you never know when that obscure vector illustration of a cactus may come in handy.

Of course, if you’re not careful it’s easy to break the bank buying everything that might be useful. But don’t fret! Our sister-site, MightyDeals.com is here to rescue your wallet with a fantastic value bundle deal.

Bundle Storm must be the bundle to end all bundles. More than 30 other web design bundles have been merged to create one of the best value collections you’ll ever see.
How do I connect a router to the UMBC Residential Network?

                                Icon

DoIT does not offer direct support for routers but this guide will briefly describe recommendations for configuring a router to successfully connect to the residential network (“Resnet”).

Tell Me

Before connecting the router to the Ethernet wall jack in the room, there are a few settings that must be changed. These settings can be accessed by connecting an ethernet cable from a port on the router to the Ethernet port on a computer. Using the router’s instruction manual, navigate to the router’s web interface using a web browser on the computer. The router’s web interface is often an IP address, such as 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. When the router’s web interface page has loaded, it will typically require a username and password, which can be found in your router’s instruction manual. Once you have successfully entered a username and password, you should be able to access the router’s settings. In these settings, be sure to change the default username and password for the router’s web interface and record this change.

                                Icon

DoIT provides campus-maintained wireless to all of the residence halls (Chesapeake, Erickson, Harbor, Patapsco, Potomac, and Susquehanna Halls) and to the Hillside and Terrace Apartments. If you are living in one of these buildings and installing a router, you must turn off all wireless network capabilities on the router. If you fail to do so, this may inadvertently cause interference to the campus wireless network.

                                Icon

DoIT does NOT provide campus-maintained wireless to the Westhills and Walker Avenue Apartments at this time. If you are living in one of these buildings and installing a router, you may use wireless network capabilities provided by the router. Be sure to properly secure the router using WPA2 encryption security and do not give the password to anyone. If possible, change the broadcasted SSID (example: Linksys, Belkin, Netgear, etc.) from the default name. If you log in to Resnet through a wireless network that is not provided by DoIT (eduroam, UMBC Campus, or UMBC Visitor), you are taking full responsibility for all network traffic from that router.

When these recommended settings have been changed, connect an Ethernet cable from the Ethernet wall jack to the port labeled “WAN” on the router.

At this point, navigate to “http://resnet.umbc.edu” using the web browser on the computer to register the router to be used in the Resnet system. On this page, you will be able to register the router using your UMBC username and corresponding password. If you allow others to connect to Resnet using your router (wired or wirelessly), you are taking full responsibility for all network traffic and activities.

Once you have completed these steps, you should have access to the Internet. If you do not have access, try connecting your computer directly to the Ethernet wall jack using an Ethernet cable. Navigate to “http://resnet.umbc.edu” using the web browser on the computer to register the computer to be used in the Resnet system.
