The Fringe NYC performances of Inexcusable Fantasies — written by Susan McCully, theatre, and directed by Eve Muson, theatre — received praise in a NYTheatre.com review released last week.

Read the article here: “Inexcusable Fantasies”

The review of the “masterfully-written two-woman piece,” written by Andrew Rothkin, details the comedy as an honest, intelligent coming-of-age story that invites the viewer into McCully’s “baring [of] her very soul.” Rothkin says, “I was awed by McCully’s wordsmithery, her intricately woven stream of words whose meanings and allusions seemed three steps ahead of me.”

He also commends the acting and chemistry of both McCully and Rachel Hirshorn ’04, theatre, as incredibly solid performance, and says that the “beautiful” staging by Muson “highlight[ed] the theatrical as much as the real, the touching as much as the funny.”

The parking lots are filling, the doors stand open, and all the people we have been waiting for, the ones who will make our community complete for the coming year, are arriving to fill our residence halls and lecture halls, athletic fields and offices. On a campus that has been open for 47 years, we are making a new beginning. For the first time, all of us are here in exactly this combination. Now come the days of handshakes and first words, of mutual exploration as we discover how we will enact our purposes together.

If you are just starting here, the first thing to know about UMBC is that it is neither a collection of buildings nor a catalog of courses, but a confluence of stories. Each of us has one: we started somewhere else; we lived, and we learned. We all arrive at UMBC with something to offer. UMBC’s tremendous diversity signifies many things to us, not least that each one of us—student, faculty or staff member—has something that we can, and must, contribute to make this community whole. Each of us can be and become our best selves here; each of us belongs.

The UMBC you are joining is diverse, scrappy, nimble, creative, caring, intense and eager. We thrive on combining our talents and our energy in scholarship, work and play that builds community. As our Provost, Philip Rous, has said, “we are all here because we want to make a difference, and we do.” UMBC is less than 50 years old (incoming freshmen: we’ll celebrate our 50th anniversary at the start of your senior year), and still being created by our collective contributions. As UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski has said, everyone here in the first 50 years is a pioneer. It is a reminder that our contributions matter, not just for ourselves but for all those who will join this community, and see it as a beacon, in the decades to come.

I love all of these things about UMBC. I love that the builders waited to see where people walked before laying the sidewalks. I love that we have a renowned chess team but no football team. I love the hidden treasures: the sculpture park and rock garden, the amphitheater and the observatory. I love that the big event the night before classes start is called Big Crazy Fun Night. I love that so many UMBC administrators, faculty members and staff members view their contributions here as living their purposes rather than just doing their jobs. As President Hrabowski has said, at UMBC, “we belong to each other.”

So welcome to everyone just joining this wonderful work-in-progress we call UMBC! This is our time to be together, so let’s make the most of it.

The Value in Dreaming Big

I often find myself rolling my eyes or getting a little sick to my stomach when I see people with bios that say “dreamer”, “I play big”, “I dream big”, or “I help people fulfill their dreams”. Over the years I’ve grown more in favor of people that work hard and consistently ship great work, as opposed to people that just talk big.

My view of the world has become more “practical” the older that I get.

That being said, I find myself “thinking big” again. I think about people like Richard Branson or Elon Musk and say to myself, “well, somebody has to do it”.

The worldview that we’ve been trained to have is one that says we’re to follow the rules, be good at one thing, and find our place in the assembly line. (Don’t think for a minute that a desk job isn’t part of an assembly line as well.)

We hold back from having big dreams because we’re afraid of what people will say, or we’re afraid of looking like an idiot. I think this is true if you aren’t taking practical steps along the way, but I don’t see anything wrong with dreaming big. Then, there’s always this:

“The desire that we have to do something that’s never been done before means that the people who are around you generally will not encourage you to do it…if they were encouraging you to do it, then other people would be doing it already and it wouldn’t be unique.” – Seth Godin

It’s important to know your dreams, but to keep them to yourself for the time being. Instead, know your end dream but build the small things it will take to get there. Eventually, people will start to put things together. After all, Richard Branson started out with a small record store, not a spaceship.

Dreams are Risky

We live in an era when if it’s not risky, it’s not worth doing. If your idea is a safe, plastic idea that already exists, people would already be doing it and it wouldn’t seem like much of a “dream”.

I keep looking to have enough guts to do something that might not work. The phrase “this might not work” is something I try to say on a regular basis after reading the great books and posts from Seth Godin.

Another question I try to ask is, “Who can I impact today and how can I do it in a way that in four years from now, they’ll be glad I did?”. This seems to be a good way to discover a pace that balances getting things done today, with reaching the dream in the end.

People get discouraged and put off chasing after their dreams because they keep waiting for everything to be okay so that they can start. I think if your goal is for everything to be okay, that’s a mistake. It’s never going to be a perfect time to start. Just go.

Combine dreaming big with shipping a small part of it every day, and I think you’ll have a formula for success.
