End to end encryption in JS Web Apps

The most significant burden to mainstream encryption is the proliferation of web apps, such as email clients, and the lack of a good encryption story inside the browser. The question is: can we use end to end encryption inside JavaScript web apps?

Asymmetric encryption suffers from the same problems as OpenID, it’s a complex subject and if its success is conditional on being understood by your average user then it will never be popular in the mainstream. The only way to deal with crypto is to do what we programmers do best: abstract it and make it work transparently behind the scenes.

The issue is with ‘The Cloud’. A lot of communication applications, perhaps the majority of them, are served and hosted remotely. So how can we add encryption to hosted web apps? We need to solve three problems:

Asymmetric (RSA) encryption/decryption routines in the browser

Public key discovery

Secure private key distribution amongst a users' devices

For JavaScript encryption/decryption routines we have a spec called WebCrypto. Both Google and Mozilla are working on this, but the bad news is it isn’t available in any browser today [1]. A draft of the spec was just published though, and both browsers have open bugs showing active development. Hopefully implementation is only a matter of time [2].

Now, the browser isn’t a trusted client - that’s true. A company could just update their JavaScript and log data whenever it’s decrypted on the client-side. Indeed, they might be compelled to do so. However, the key thing is that this can be detected. Knowing your communications are compromised is half the battle.

There are a few ways that public key discovery could be implemented. For example, this could be part of the JS web app - the first time the user signs up their public key (stored in the browser’s keychain) is requested and stored. Indeed WebCrypto contains provisions for generating & retrieving keys.

Again, this is open to abuse - a malicious service provide could MITM communications by inserting their own public key. However, like the previous attack this ultimately could be detected (not least by key pinning).

The last issue is private key distribution. Your average user wants apps to work seamlessly between their devices without them having to manually copy over private keys. In addition syncing private keys with an external provider, such as Apple, clearly isn’t secure. How do we provide an easy key distribution system?

To be honest, I don’t have a good answer here. Perhaps secure synchronization on the local network similar to the way OSX’s AirDrop works? Or perhaps we should just encrypt and duplicate each message multiple times for all the recipient’s devices?

Security is always a trade-off with convenience, and the solutions I’ve presented above clearly have their own compromises. Indeed, as well as the security concessions I listed above, there are also convenience ones too. For example, without the plain text of a message web apps can’t offer search. However, surely these compromises are better then the situation we’re in now - no security at all.

[1] - You can tinker with a Polyfill for now
[2] - Although it won’t hurt to voice your support, or even give a hand implementing it.

How do I reveal the full headers of an email?

The headers allow DoIT to see where the email was generated from and the path it took to reach your inbox. In the case of emails sent from within the campus we have a very high likelihood of tracking down the original sender, otherwise there is still some information we may be able to use.

In Gmail, open the message of interest

Click on the drop down arrow next to the Reply arrow , at the upper left of the message.

Select Show original from the drop down menu.

The full headers, plus the text of the message, will appear in a new browser window (or new tab depending on your browser's settings).

Right-click anywhere in this window, then click Select All

Right-click anywhere in the now-highlighted text, and click Copy

You can now paste the full text of the message, including headers, into a new email message.

Ruben Delgado, JCET, in the Baltimore Sun

What do you need to do to put up offshore wind turbines? You need to know where the wind is. That’s what Ruben Delgado, a faculty research assistant in UMBC’s Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET), is working on.

Timothy Wheeler at the Baltimore Sun wrote:

“Also aboard are scientists from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, who are gathering data on atmospheric conditions and winds high above the water, where the giant turbine blades will be.

Ruben Delgado, a faculty research assistant at UMBC, said the data gathered using remote sensing gear on board as well as old-fashioned weather balloons launched from the deck will help scientists and potential wind developers ground-truth the government’s wind-speed estimates, which are generated by computer models using mostly land-based data. The cruise also may provide information on how winds can vary from day to day and hour to hour.

“You need to know what the variation is,” Delgado said, “because if you have a windmill and all of a sudden have a gust, that means it’s going to produce more power.”

On Friday afternoon, the windspeed aloft where the turbine blades would spin was a steady 10 meters per second, he reported.”

Occupational Safety and Health Training and Assessment

In conjunction with the UMBC Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and Environmental Safety and Health, the ORPC is pleased to provide updated information about the occupational health and safety program (OHSP) designed to provide information and procedures to protect the health and safety of individuals working with or near research animals. The program follows guidance and requirements for promoting occupational safety in accordance with university policy as well as federal regulatory requirements.

The UMBC OHSP's primary purpose is to educate and promote safe practices and personnel safety as well as preventing occupational injury and illness. Personnel working with or near research animals face several occupational health risks, including the possibility of allergic reactions, animal-related injuries such as bites, zoonoses (diseases that spread from animals to humans), and exposure to hazardous materials.

Two steps are involved to ensure the all persons working with animals are in compliance with this program:

1) Taking the required training that describes the basics of animal safety and working in a laboratory setting as well as specific safety issues and precautions. This training is separate from the CITI animal care and use modules personnel complete prior to working on an approval animal protocol.

2) Completing a required risk assessment form to evaluate if personnel are “at risk” by working in the lab animal environment and recommendations and services for further health assessment.

Additional requirements and information about the OSHP, training and risk assessment is available at http://umbc.edu/research/ORPC/IACUC_oshp_overview.html.
