Shaping UMBC’s Future: A Strategic Planning Conversation

<Tagline>Join President Sheares Ashby and Provost van Dulmen April 25</Tagline>

Dear UMBC Community,

We write to invite you to join our fellow members of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee as we host President Valerie Sheares Ashby for a conversation about the university’s strategic priorities. This is a key moment in our work to create the future we envision together for UMBC, and so we encourage you to join us, whether in person or virtually.

The event will be held at noon on Friday, April 25, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Fine Arts Building. If you cannot attend in person, you may attend virtually. Please RSVP by clicking here by April 18.

At the event, President Sheares Ashby will share her thoughts on the high-level aspirations and directions that will frame the strategic plan—themes that reflect the input of the community during the Bold Conversations, input we received in last fall’s Core Values Survey, and input the steering committee is receiving as they engage with the community.

This conversation about our future closely follows another important university event that I hope you will attend, the April 23 session to hear your feedback on UMBC’s Middle States accreditation self-study. The self-study is an important part of the accreditation process, which reviews our progress and evolution as an academic institution. This review is an essential step in setting our course for the future.

We recognize there are many external factors at play that affect higher education and that policies and regulations are rapidly evolving. Those changes will not deter us from our mission or our vision for UMBC; in fact, this work is more urgent and valuable than ever, and we are eager to advance toward our shared goals for the university. We look forward to doing so in this special session with President Sheares Ashby on April 25. See you there!

Sincerely,

Manfred H. M. van Dulmen

Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Vice President for Student Affairs

Abstract

In this presentation I will share how the role of social media has shaped Mexican feminist movements. I will focus on this through an analysis of hashtags, social media presence, and geo mapping tools that have been utilized to spread awareness and objectives of the movements. I will focus specifically on the region of Jalisco due to its interconnections between narco violence and feminicides. Scholars have argued Mexico has four contemporary phases of feminicides. The first one recorded to be from 1993 to the 2000s has been named the "Feminicidial Emergence", which coincides with this period of increased narco presence. Nonetheless, feminist resistance has continuously found ways to denounce narco gender based violence. In March 8th protests, through the use of hashtags and other identifying factors (colors, symbols), the movement's objectives can be consolidated and spread. The same day an event happens in Jalisco's capital there are complementary events in other cities in the state or even other Latinx's cities, such as Miami or Detroit. This plants the question of how social media can provide and inspire a space for civic participation and engagement across borders.

FROM INVISIBLE TO IMPACTFUL: THE UNORTHODOX SCIENCE OF NANOSCALE THERMAL TRANSPORT AND ITS ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS

<Tagline>REMINDER: ME Dept. Seminar, Fri., 4/4, ENG 112, 2:30 P.M.</Tagline>

Join us tomorrow for a seminar to be presented by Dr. Mohammad Ghashami, associate professor, mechanical and industrial engineering department, the University of Illinois Chicago. Please see abstract and biography below.

    Abstract:

As devices and systems shrink to the micro- and nanoscale, the way heat moves fundamentally changes, challenging conventional engineering approaches and

opening new frontiers in energy transport and conversion. At these scales, the classical

assumptions of conduction, convection, and radiation break down, revealing intricate interactions between energy carriers that govern thermal behavior in unprecedented ways. These effects are not just scientific curiosities but also the key to transformative advancements in micro/nanoelectronics, thermal management, energy harvesting, and even space exploration. In this seminar, we will explore the physics of nanoscale thermal transport, highlighting how these emerging phenomena diverge from macroscopic expectations and enable unprecedented control over heat flow. A particular focus will be on experimental investigations of radiative heat transfer in the near field and sub-continuum gas conduction. We will also discuss the design and engineering of novel materials with tailored thermal properties, paving the way for next-generation energy technologies. By developing a deeper understanding of nanoscale heat transfer, we can engineer materials and systems that redefine energy efficiency and thermal management. What was once an invisible and elusive aspect of physics is now at the forefront of innovation, shaping the next generation of engineering applications.

    Bio:

Mohammad Ghashami is an associate professor in the mechanical and industrial engineering department at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), where he directs the Chicago Energy Engineering and Thermal Applications (Cheeta) laboratory. His research endeavors are dedicated to understanding the fundamental mechanisms of nanoscale energy transport, and exploiting their unique properties to forge new engineering applications, such as solid-state energy conversion systems to advanced micro/nanoelectromechanical systems (M/NEMS) actuators. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Utah in 2019. He received the NSF Early CAREER award in 2023, and his research has been supported by various funding sources, including NSF-EQUATE, NASA-EPSCoR, and the Department of Transportation (DOT), among others.

Light refreshments will be provided.

We look forward to seeing you there!
