If your preferred email program is not one of the supported clients, you may be able to configure it using these basic settings:

• Username: Your myUMBC ID/username. Please note that your myUMBC ID is case sensitive. Always use lowercase letters.
• Password: Your myUMBC password
• Outgoing Mail: smtp.umbc.edu Enable SSL Port = 587 (TLS Encryption) or SSL Port = 465 (SSL Encryption)
• Incoming Mail: imap.umbc.edu Enable SSL Port = 993
• Mail Protocol: IMAP

Answer

1. Start Outlook
2. Click Tools and select Account Settings...
3. Click New...
4. Check Manually configure server settings or additional server types and click Next
5. Select Internet E-mail and click Next
6. Enter Your Name in the box labeled Your Name
7. Enter your myUMBCusername@umbc.edu in the box labeled E-mail Address
8. Set the Account Type to IMAP
9. Enter imap.umbc.edu in the box labeled Incoming mail server (IMAP)

10. Enter smtp.umbc.edu in the box labeled Outgoing mail server (SMTP)

    Note: If you use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than the UMBC, you may need to use the SMTP server name it provides if smtp.umbc.edu fails. Contact your ISP for this information.

11. Enter your myUMBC username in the box labeled User Name
12. Leave the box labeled password blank
13. Remove the check box next to Remember password
14. Click More Settings
15. In the window that appears, click on the Outgoing Server tab.
16. Click the check box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
17. Confirm that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected
18. Click on the Advanced tab
19. Under Incoming server (IMAP) select SSL for the box labeled Use the following type of encrypted connection:
20. Confirm that the server port number for the incoming server changed to 993 (this will happen automatically when you check the box in the previous step)
21. Change the port number to 587 under Outgoing server (SMTP), and select TLS for the box labeled Use the following type of encrypted connection:
22. Change the Server Timeouts from 1 minute to 10 minutes by moving the slider all the way to the right. Anything lower than 5 minutes will bog down the server and give error messages
23. In the Folders section, in the box labeled Root folder path, type mail
24. Click OK to close the Internet E-mail Settings window
25. Click Next in the Add New E-mail Account window
26. At this point you will be prompted for your myUMBC password, to allow you to log in to your newly created account. Type your password in the box labeled password, and click OK
    You may be notified that the root folder path has changed, and that "Outlook has flushed all cached folders". This is normal. Click OK to continue.
27. Click Finish in the E-mail Accounts window

1. Open Thunderbird
   • After Thunderbird opens, a Mail Account Setup window will pop-up
2. Enter your name, myUMBC email address, and password
3. Click Continue
4. Click the Stop button when Thunderbird tries to find your mail settings
5. Click Manual Setup... button
6. Select IMAP server type as incoming server connection
7. Verify the information within Server Settingsdialog box is as follows:
   • Server name: imap.umbc.edu
   • Port: 993 if using IMAP
   • User name: myUMBC username
   • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
8. Go to Outgoing Server (SMTP)settings:
   • Hightlight umbc.edu (Default) and click Edit button
9. Entering the following information:
   o Description: UMBC SMTP
   o Server name: smtp.umbc.edu
   o Port: 587
   o User name: myUMBC username
   o Connection Security: STARTTLS
10. Click OK button
11. Click OK button to exit Account Settings" screen

You are now ready to interact with your account. Click Get Mail button.

   • If this is the first time you are launching the program, the Mail Account Setup window will appear
2. Click Cancel
   • If the System Integration window pops up, click OK
3. Click on Tools which is in the Menu Bar of the e-mail client window
4. Choose Account Settings and the account settings window will appear
5. Click on the Account Actions button and select Add Mail Account... from the drop-down menu
6. Enter your full name in the Your Name box
7. Enter your myUMBC e-mail address in the Email Address box
8. Type your myUMBC password in the Password box
9. Click the Continuebutton
   • Thunderbird will attempt to automatically acquire your settings
10. Click the Stop button

11. Enter

    imap.umbc.edu

    in the Incomingbox

    1. Set the drop-down menu to IMAP

    2. Type

       993

       in the next box

    3. Set the drop-down menu to SSL/TLS
12. Enter smtp.umbc.edu in the Outgoingbox.
    • Enter 587 in the next box and set the drop-down menu to STARTTLS
13. Click Manual Set-up
14. Click on the OKbutton to finish configuring your e-mail settings
    • You will return to the main Thunderbird e-mail window. In the left column of the window, you should see the name of the e-mail account you just created
15. Click on the arrow symbol to the left of the account name to show the Inbox folder for your account
    • Your e-mail messages and any e-mail folders you have will soon appear. You can now use Mozilla Thunderbird to send and receive e-mail messages
