Gov. Anthony Brown for governor.

Hussey, an assistant professor of political science at UMBC, notes that Brown is a front-runner in the election and endorsements like Rawlings-Blake’s can deter potential rivals, but Brown will face challengers.

Attorney General Doug Gansler has already raised millions for a gubernatorial bid, and U.S. Rep. “Dutch” Ruppersberger and Del. Heather Mizeur are widely considered to be possible contenders. Hussey says Ruppersberger is already established in Maryland and would be popular, but he lacks the mystique of lesser-known candidates. She anticipates that Mizeur has a strong future in Maryland politics, but may not yet have the exposure for a gubernatorial run. Gansler, she suggests, would need to boost his name recognition outside of Montgomery County.

Positions Available -- SGA Senate and Finance Board

<Tagline>Apply for Senator and/or Senate/Finance Board Secretary</Tagline>

UMBC's nationally recognized Student Government Association is looking for students interested in making a difference on campus and beyond.

If you're looking to get more involved on campus, the SGA Senate and Finance Board are looking to fill some vacancies. The Senate is looking to fill two empty Senate seats, while both the Senate and the Finance Board are searching for a secretary for the 2013-2014 Academic Year.

The Senate is SGA’s engine for collecting ideas from students and turning them into campus change initiatives. Members meet weekly (Mondays at 5:30 p.m.) to discuss and develop initiatives, talk with campus
administrators and take positions on issues. But most of the Senate’s work
takes place between the weekly meetings. Members spend time talking with
students, representing all undergraduates on university committees, meeting in
project working groups and doing the follow-up needed to get initiatives off the
    ground.

The Finance Board is the branch of SGA that provides funds to support student organization activities: $200,000 this year. Most of the Finance Board’s work is done at weekly meetings, where student organization leaders present requests and Finance Board members ask questions and make decisions. These meetings, which take place Tuesdays starting at 5:30 p.m., can be both long and intense. Finance Board members have to wrestle with complex issues: applying university policies, striking a balance between supporting amazing events and stretching funds across the entire year, thinking about the precedent-setting impact of their decisions. But they have a lot of fun too, partly because it’s so
    interactive and engaging.

The deadline to apply for these positions is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 9th.

Carlin has been with UMBC since 1996, starting as a student employee and then hired full-time as a desktop support and help desk technician in 1997. Over the years, he’s taken on a variety of roles and projects: he oversaw DoIT’s continuity of operations following power outages, took the lead on support of the Columbus Center, served as the DoIT liaison for the 2010 IT Restructuring Report and led UMBC’s Google Apps deployment.

From the DoIT announcement about Carlin’s departure:

“Mike is also a UMBC success story. While working full-time he completed both his Masters and Ph.D. in Information Systems and ultimately married his UMBC Organic Chemistry Lab partner Cherisse Carlin (Lewis), who also completed her Ph.D. in Language, Literacy and Culture.”
