Light Point Security Chosen By The Wall Street Journal As A Startup Of The Year

The Wall Street Journal Selects Light Point Security Out Of More Than 500 Startups For Their Startup Of The Year Documentary

Baltimore, MD – June 24, 2013 – Light Point Security, a cybersecurity company that uses virtualization and cloud technologies to protect companies from web-based malware, today announced it has been selected by the Wall Street Journal to participate in the inaugural ‘WSJ Startup of the Year,’ an episodic video documentary for WSJ Live, the Journal's online video platform.

Premiering June 24, the series matches 24 innovative startups with global business leaders and influencers, and tracks their progress from startup to success over the course of five months. The Journal has engaged over 40 business leaders and influencers to mentor the entrepreneurs participating in the series. Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group, Steve Case, Chairman of the Case Foundation, Chairman of Startup America and co-founder and former CEO of AOL, and Steve Blank, eight-time serial entrepreneur and co-founder of E.piphany, are among the participating global business leaders.

“We are honored that Light Point Security’s innovative technology earned the attention of The Wall Street Journal,” said Beau Adkins, Co-founder and CEO of Light Point Security. “Our unique approach to protecting companies from web-based malware has already been embraced by the security industry, and it is encouraging to see that it is also gaining recognition among the mainstream media. We congratulate the 23 other startups selected for this prestigious honor, and look forward to engaging with them and the amazing mentors.”

Light Point Security’s product is the first and only server-based virtual-machine-in-a-browser. It protects companies from web-based malware by isolating each employee’s browsing session within a server-based virtual machine that is destroyed immediately after use. By isolating the dangerous task of running websites in a disposable virtual machine, no web content ever reaches employee computers – making it virtually impossible for web-based malware to infect a corporate network.

Ranging from the fields of health care and cybersecurity to energy and education, the 24 companies were chosen from more than 500 applications. Each startup is based in the U.S., has at least a prototype in place, and less than $10 million in annual revenue. Throughout the documentary, editors from The Wall Street Journal, working closely with the mentors, will narrow down the businesses to decide who will be the Journal’s first ‘Startup of the Year.’

The WSJ Startup of the Year documentary can be seen beginning on June 24 here: http://wsj.com/startupoftheyear

About Light Point Security
Light Point Security is a cybersecurity company based in Baltimore, Maryland founded by two former NSA employees. The company is dedicated to stopping malware infections delivered through web browsers. Instead of relying on security through detection, its products use virtualization and cloud technologies to provide security through isolation.

Hello everyone, I’m delighted to start assisting Phi Kappa Phi at UMBC and UM. I will be taking part in a number of organizational, administrative, and public relations tasks for Chapter 22 BC. I graduated from UMBC in May, having majored in Philosophy, History, and Ancient Studies. In addition to working in this position I will begin graduate school at The George Washington University in the fall to pursue a master’s degree in Philosophy and Social Policy. I am a PKP member, and am very excited about the organization’s upcoming activities, especially promoting the literacy project we are presently exploring. I'll be sending out messages on facebook and myUMBC to keep members updated on chapter activities. I am really looking forward to meeting and working with the PKP community at UMBC and UM.
-Peter Andes

How To Keep Your Smartphone Secure

In light of all the snooping by the government on individuals, it seems that it's not that difficult for anyone with the know-how to find out what you're doing. Bill Supernor, CTO of security company Koolspan, speaks to Weekend Edition Saturday host Scott Simon about how to keep your smartphone safe.

Copyright © 2013 NPR. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

BILL SUPERNOR: I was in a business lounge at an airport in Newark. I look at my phone and I'm moving the buttons and it was definitely behaving a little strange, maybe it was a little slow. I ripped the back off the phone, I pulled the battery out. I mean, I got off the network quickly and I didn't turn the phone back on again until I was out of that airport.

SCOTT SIMON, HOST: Bill Supernor is the chief technology officer with Koolspan. That's a mobile phone security company. Snooping and hacking on a lot of people's minds, we reached out to him to find out what you can do to keep your phone secure. First, how vulnerable are our phones?

SUPERNOR: The BlackBerry's traditionally an enterprise phone and enterprise wants security and so that's what they've built in from the ground up. On the Apple side, they're striving for a really, really highly controlled and good user experience and so they've made it very difficult to put in bad apps. And on Android, they're taking a different path, and that is to make their device as open as possible, giving rise, dare I say it, to more creativity, but at the same time, you know, that can leave the door open to creative attacks as well.

SIMON: So what should you do?

SUPERNOR: Use a password on your phone. There's a number of different phones that have such a feature where if you fail your password ten times in a row, it'll either completely lock and disable the phone or it'll even go so far as to, you know, do the self-destruct and delete all of your data.

SIMON: So what shouldn't you do?

SUPERNOR: You should never assume your text messages are secure. Never. It's an easy place to hack. I never send credit card numbers or social security numbers or important private information over SMS.

SIMON: What about online shopping?

SUPERNOR: Look for the little lock icon. Look for indications that your connection with the place where you're about to type in your credit card number is in fact secure. Well, eBay has its own app and all these retailers are coming out with their own app. Not the Web anymore, or it's not a Web browser anymore. There is no little lock icon.

And also, look out for things like Amazon's one click and, you know, other types of apps that let people make purchases without hitting any buttons beyond buy now.

SIMON: Bill Supernor, chief technology officer with the mobile security company, Koolspan with security tips for your phone. And tomorrow, Rachel Martin speaks with NPR's Steve Henn about the ways that parents and kids can protect their privacy online. Plus the latest news on NPR's WEEKEND EDITION SUNDAY.

We know you're listening to NPR News.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

Copyright © 2013 NPR. All rights reserved.
