No, independent students should at least include themselves in the household. You should list yourself even if you do not provide more than 50% of your own financial support.

When a FAFSA is submitted, the Department of Education (DOE) links to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA) to confirm that the applicant is a citizen or an eligible non-citizen. If the information at either of these agencies does not match the information supplied on the FAFSA, DOE requires the educational institution to verify the student’s citizenship status. Students should review the comments on their SAR to determine which agency should be contacted to resolve the mismatch.

Verification is the process of confirming that information reported by the student and parent(s) or spouse on the FAFSA is accurate. Each year, approximately 30 percent of all student applicants are randomly selected by the federal processor for verification. A student may also be selected for verification by the university.

Students selected for verification will have a verification comment on their Student Aid Report (SAR – the output document received after completing the FAFSA). In addition, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will notify selected students via alerts on their myUMBC account if verification documentation is needed.

The key features of PHP 5.5.0 include:

             Added generators and coroutines.
             Added the finally keyword.
Added a simplified password hashing API.
Added support for constant array/string dereferencing.
Added scalar class name resolution via ::class.
Added support for using empty() on the result of function calls and other expressions.
Added support for non-scalar Iterator keys in foreach.
Added support for list() constructs in foreach statements.
Added the Zend OPcache extension for opcode caching.
The GD library has been upgraded to version 2.1 adding new functions and improving existing functionality.
A lot more improvements and fixes.

            Changes that affect compatibility:

PHP logo GUIDs have been removed.
Windows XP and 2003 support dropped.
Case insensitivity is no longer locale specific. All case insensitive matching for function, class and constant names is now performed in a locale independent manner according to ASCII rules.

For users upgrading from PHP 5.4,
             a migration guide is available
detailing the changes between 5.4 and 5.5.0.

The revelation of an National Security Agency program that may be collecting information about individuals’ communications from telephone and Internet companies has created a marketing opportunity for Bethesda-based KoolSpan.

The firm’s main technology called TrustChip fits into smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktop phones, and encrypts phone calls and digital messages so they cannot be monitored or intercepted, chief executive Gregg Smith said.

The company has sold the chip primarily to businesses and government entities to date, but the NSA controversy has generated interest from average consumers, Smith said.

“We haven’t spent a lot of marketing dollars in pursuit of the consumer to date,” Smith said. “But this news really proved to me that there really is an opportunity for us to pursue the consumer market.”

But couldn’t the technology fall in the wrong hands?

Smith said KoolSpan
must screen the prospective buyers of its chips against government
databases before making a sale and is prohibited from doing business with certain countries.

    Digital revolution

    Founding Fathers, meet modern technology.

Historical documents once held by George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison are now available on a searchable Web site called Founders Online.

The project, which debuted last week, is the result of a multi-year partnership between the National Archives and the University of Virginia Press.

In all, creators expect the Web site will host roughly 175,000 documents. That includes 242 volumes of published print documents that have already been transcribed and annotated, as well as about 55,000 documents that are currently unpublished.

MarkLogic, a software company with offices in McLean, provided the project’s technological backbone, which includes document storage, full-text search, databases and Web services, said Kevin Shelly, public sector vice president.

Shelly said the company doesn’t shy away from “unstructured” or “semi-structured” data that may not be ideally formatted for searchable computer databases — such as, say, documents written more than 200 years ago.

The software “turns data into real, usable information,” Shelly said. “Harnessing all of that information is improving outcomes in all areas of business, health care, education, private sector and government.”
