Tickets could start in DoIT but could end up being assigned to the Registrars' office. Good to identify which UMBC department has already looked at the ticket.

What benefits can be gained from using RT instead of our shared mailbox solution?

Tell me

When a small group of people need to respond to a single email address, they are advised to use a generic email address with a shared mailbox or listserv list. RT improves on this by:

Tracking request history.

Sorting related tickets into queues.

Allowing a ticket to be assigned to a given staff member.

Allowing priorities to be assigned and automatically escalated.

Sending copies of changes by email to the staff and to the original requestor.

Consistently using a departmental email address, so that personal staff email addresses are not involved.

Allowing some changes by email if convenient.

Using Shibboleth, so no additional passwords need to be remembered.

Allowing interaction via the Web, with any Web browser. No special client is involved. Further, the original requestor can check the status of his ticket and view appends on the Web.

Allowing administration -- new queues, ticket assignment, new users, etc. -- to be done directly by a departmental administrator.

Typical departmental usage:

A department might have 2-3 students assistants and a supervisor who answer inquires about admissions. RT would allow the supervisor to assign a given request to a specific student or let any student answer any unassigned request. The supervisor can add or remove students assistants as needed.

If the department also provides tech support to its faculty and staff, those requests could be tracked in a separate queue, either using the same email address as used for admission queries or a different one. A different set of staff would review the requests for tech support, and the student assistants answering admissions questions don't have to know about this queue.

Additional queues, groups of people, and email addresses can be added, perhaps for classroom support or for a specific classes. Tickets can be moved from one queue to another as needed.

Explanation of Icons:

User Unavailable - User no longer has access to the course (most likely because they have officially dropped the course).
Column Not Visible to Users - Column is not visible to students
Completed - Item has been completed by student
Needs Grading - Student has submitted an assignment or quiz which needs grading
Grade Modified Manually - You (the instructor) have changed a student's grade on an assignment
Attempt in Progress - A student is currently using the Assessment or Assignment OR the student was kicked out of the system prior to choosing Submit
External Grade - This column is marked as a column that could be shared outside the Blackboard system (such as to Peoplesoft; this is not implemented at UMBC). One column must always be marked as the External Grade, and it can not be deleted. If you need to delete this column, you need to set another column as the External Grade.
Grade Exempted for this User - The instructor has chosen to exempt this grade for this student which means this student has been allowed to skip this assessment without penalty.
Error -Grade Center Error.

A dash (-) indicates that there is no information; the student has not taken the Assessment or submitted the Assignment.

Go to the test link inside the course (not control panel).

Click the down arrows next to the test link.

Select Edit the Test Options.

Change the availability dates.

Click Submit.

All students have taken the test except one student, forced completion is not enabled orthe test is closed but not all students have taken it:

First option: Enable a password on the test and give the password to the student:

Click the down arrows next to the test link.

Select Edit the Test Options.

Change the availability dates.

Enter a password into the password field.

Click the check box next to the password field to enable it.

Click Submit.

Second option: Use an adaptive release rule to release it to a single student:

Change the availability dates in Test Options as outlined in the above instructions.

Go to the test link inside the course (not control panel).

Enter the student's myUMBC username or click Browse to search for the student. A pop-up window will appear.

Search for the student.

Click the check box next to the student's name.

Click Submit.
