Deal of the week: Inspiring book offer from Smashing Magazine

Almost every business has a web presence these days; from single page ‘business card’ style sites, to million+ product e-commerce hubs, owning a website is as universal as taxes. Of course, there are new startups, but even in those cases entrepreneurs tend to have bought a domain name, or thrown up a template.

It’s no surprise then that the bread and butter for most web designers is not site design, but redesign.

On the surface, redesign looks easy; you have a starting point, with some real world data on what is and isn’t working for your client. Once you dive a little deeper you’ll find redesigns are a minefield of competing ideas. It will take all of your skill to exploit the current site’s successes and identify its failings.

Moreover, there is no room for error in a redesign. Clients have often been burned by poor results in the past and are more cautious. They’re more likely to have spent a long time analyzing their site themselves. They’re probably frustrated by the need for a redesign, or what is sometimes worse, they’re so excited by it that they’re spilling over with ideas, many of which aren’t appropriate.

Happily, there’s a lot of great advice available on how to tackle this tricky task and one of the best sources is Smashing Magazine’s current set of eBooks. Worth nearly $40, our sister site MightyDeals.com has arranged a 40% discount on this great set:

“Smashing Book #3: Redesign The Web” is 340 pages of advice on vital subjects like: the business aspects of redesigning a site; platform considerations; upgrading code to HTML5 and CSS3; important considerations of mobile design; and of course, going responsive.

“Smashing Book #3 1/3” takes redesigns to the next level: insert ‘story’ into your redesign to engage users; rethink and repurpose navigation to improve UX; make the site’s content work harder; and there’s even a detailed case study of Smashing’s own redesign.

“Essentials of Mobile Design”, “Mobile Design Patterns”, “Designing For Android” and “Designing For iPhone” cover the essentials of the biggest reason clients cite for redesigning their site: mobile compatibility. Learn the difference between mobile sites and apps, marketing, and the all important responsive techniques you’ll need.

The set of six books comes in DRM-free format, as PDFs, ePUBs and MOBIs, so you can study them however and wherever you like. Head over to MightyDeals.com now to take advantage of this great offer.

This document defines APIs for a database of records holding simple values and hierarchical objects. Each record consists of a key and some value. Moreover, the database maintains indexes over records it stores. An application developer directly uses an API to locate records either by their key or by using an index. A query language can be layered on this API. An indexed database can be implemented using a persistent B-tree data structure. Comments are welcome through 07 June. The app: URI scheme. This specification defines the app: URI scheme and rules for dereferencing an app: URI, which can be used to address resources inside a package (e.g., a packaged application). The dereferencing model relies on HTTP semantics to return resources in a manner akin to a HTTP GET request. Doing so allows this URI scheme to be used with other technologies that rely on HTTP responses to function as intended, such as XHR.

Messaging API. This specification defines a System Level API which offers a simple interface to get access to mobile messaging services. A typical use case of the Messaging API is the implementation of a messaging client application that allows the user to send SMS and MMS messages as well as to access and manage the received SMS and MMS messages.

Ayasdi Named “Cool Vendor” by Gartner

Ayasdi Named "Cool Vendor" by Gartner

By: Jeff Yoshimura

As the Wall Street Journal noted this past March, two and a half years ago, Dr. Pek Lum,
a biologist who had spent more than a decade in pharmaceuticals, saw a
stunning discovery when she met Ayasdi’s co-founders for the first time.
By complete coincidence, they happened to be looking at a breast cancer
dataset that she had produced while at Merck twelve years before. She
knew this dataset inside and out. But, using Ayasdi’s software, she saw
    something strikingly different and unique.

Specifically, Pek saw that the data formed a “Y” shape that
looked like a two-earned worm. Within minutes, she identified a new
sub-population of surviving patients that, based on their genetic
markers, were supposed to have died. Having used nearly every leading
analytical and statistical tool available, Pek immediately knew that
Ayasdi’s co-founders were onto something big. Soon after, Pek joined
Ayasdi as the VP of Solutions and Chief Data Scientist and worked to get
this discovery scientifically validated and published in Nature's Scientific Reports.

Based on this work and much more, we are incredibly honored to be recognized by Gartner as a ‘Cool Vendor’ that is "innovative, impactful and intriguing" in the area of life sciences.

Today, we work with many of the world’s leading
pharmaceutical and healthcare organizations, such as Merck, BN
ImmunoTherapeutics (a subsidiary of Bavarian Nordic), Mount Sinai
Medical Center, and UCSF. Our approach using Topological Data Analysis
(TDA) is helping scientists and researchers automatically identify
important and unique relationships in highly complex datasets across a
wide variety of areas including cancer, diabetes, E-Coli, traumatic
brain and spinal cord injuries, and autism.

Congratulations to Pek — and to our entire team — who have
helped make this recognition possible. And, more importantly, we send a
special thank you to our customers and collaborators for working with us
to help them find breakthrough insights that will eventually help
improve lives all over the world.

product or service depicted in its research publications, and does not
