OUT for Work Summer 2013 Internship Program

OUT for Work is a nonprofit organization with a mission to educate, prepare, and empower LGBTQ college students for the transition from academia to the workplace.  We do this by organizing career conferences, events, and providing tools and resources to college and university students across the country. We also reach out to LGBTQ safe and inclusive companies and organizations and bring them together to help educate and act as resources to prepare students.  
What is the OUT for Work internship program?
OUT for Work offers internships to all graduate, undergraduate, as well as recently graduated students covering a variety of disciplines. 
Internships are located in the Washington, D.C. office. OUT for Work offers public transportation travel cost reimbursements, however this is not a paid internship. Course credit for the internship is offered depending on the policies of the particular institution the student is attending. The status of a particular internship as credit will be determined before an internship is offered. 

Who can apply for OUT for Work internships?

We are looking specifically for individuals to fill two internship positions this summer:

1) Media/ public relations and outreach liaison – this person will focus on communications and press done by OUT for Work through social networking sites. This person will be responsible for maintaining the sites as well as posting articles and information about upcoming events and programs. This person will also keep in touch with our members and followers and do research to find interesting articles to promote, organize press releases about upcoming projects, publications, and events as well as creatively find new ways for OUT for Work to connect with list-servers, databases, and followers.

2) Research & Development Assistant – this person will maintain the up-to-date level of our databases, upload them into our online database system, maintain files and documents, while also assisting in archiving our resources, including websites, links, articles, organizations we are involved with, past conferences and programs, and more. This person will also keep past attendees in touch with OUT for Work, making them feel connected to our programs as well as other projects and assignments as needed.

Successful candidates must have the following skills:
-Knowledge of and commitment to LGBTQ issues. 
-Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing. 
-Computer proficiency for word processing, database work, e-mail and Web research. 
-Desire and commitment to work in a environment where commitment to diversity based on race, sex, ethnic origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, and physical ability is an important institutional value.

Annapolis-area blues duo Swampcandy — one half of which is comprised of bassist Joseph Mitchell ’09, music — launched a new CD and documentary film this month, according to a feature in the Capital newspaper.

The article states:

“Fresh in the footsteps of the last month’s successful Annapolis Film Festival, the combination of the 17-song CD, the vinyl release and the film premiere of “Midnight Creep” melds an already deep music scene to the emerging focus on film, underscoring Annapolis’s art-for-art’s-sake scene.

The crowd-funded film, like the duo’s music, is a mix of genres — part documentary, part music video, part art house.

Mitchell, who has performed with Swampcandy founder Ruben Dobbs for two years, plays percussive standup bass and kickdrum. The documentary follows the creation of the new CD, and features plenty of performances.

I'm hard at work creating a brand new talk I'm so far calling "CSS is for Computers" that I plan to be giving and refining at some upcoming conferences.

There is a whole new series in The Lodge. Even if you aren't interested in the content of the lodge, but are interested in supporting CSS-Tricks, being a Lodge member is the best way to do that. As a thank you, you now don't see any ads no matter where you are on the site as a logged in Lodge member.

I'm still brainstorming new ideas for more Lodge content. My best idea so far is "Deep Dive" videos where posts/almanac entries/snippets/etc will have optional videos attached to them where the content is explained in more detail. Those videos will only be watchable by Lodge members. Just an idea.

CodePen is humming along! New features for all users include making auto-run JavaScript optional, making the Hire Me button for everybody, editor layout alternatives, and upgrading the editor as a foundation for many more editor improvements. PRO users now have asset hosting.

My latest Pastry Box Project entry was about introversion. It seemed to resonate pretty strongly with a lot of folks. I did a follow up article on my personal site with some of the reactions and further thoughts.

I'm moving to Milwaukee soon! It took me a while to find a place but eventually being vigilant on Craigslist panned out. Why Milwaukee? I have a bunch of friends there I visit fairly often and I always love it. I grew up in Wisconsin, but never lived in Milwaukee. Heading back to Wisconsin means being closer to family and old friends, which I like. Plus it's a lot less expensive than living in the San Francisco area, and I could use the savings as I'm out on my own trying to build a startup.

Looking forward to checking out Bucketworks and Lounge 42.
