Researcher of the Week: Kimchi Nguyen

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

How did you find your mentor for your research project?
I have always been interested in research. In the summer of my sophomore year, I emailed Dr. Richard Karpel expressing my interest in his lab. It was a very exciting moment when Dr. Karpel emailed me back to set up a date to talk about his research. As a result, since fall 2012 I have been working in Dr. Karpel’s lab.
How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
I started out working on projects with other undergraduates in my lab, familiarizing myself with the experiments and how to work the different instruments needed for our research. Dr. Karpel approached me one day and asked me if I wanted to work on my own project. I have always wanted the experience of independently leading a project, so I accepted. I knew I wanted to work on the project Dr. Karpel suggested because it is the same concept to which I have been exposed while working with other experienced undergraduates. However, this project will be a new learning experience for me because instead of working with ssDNA, my project will focus on dsDNA. I hope that my project will further our understanding of the interaction of dsDNA with gene 32 protein.
Is this your first independent research?
No, this is not my first independent research project. However, it is my first project that involves funding.
How much time do you put into it?
I started to work on my URA project in the spring 2012. I have been working about 10 hours a week in the summer. I plan to work 5-8 hours a week during the academic year.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?
Many of my undergraduate friends who work in various research labs recommended that I look into the Undergraduate Research Award. Dr. Karpel gave me a research topic, emailed me the URA application, and encouraged me to give it a try. He said to try my best and even if I was not accepted, the application process would give me experience in the future with writing proposals and asking for funding.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?
I had already finished Biochemistry and was taking Biochemistry II at the time, so I felt like I was prepared for this project.
Was the URA application difficult to do?
The application was not hard to do. It was very straightforward. The process of filling out the application allowed me to expand my ideas on the topic and I was able to understand more about my project as a whole.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?
Dr. Karpel helped me proofread my application. He also gave me suggestions to improve the background information section on my application. He was very helpful and supportive.

What has been the hardest part about your research?
The hardest part of my research so far is my attempt to produce DNA cellulose because the absorbance of dsDNA was too low, so I had to repeat the process. This process requires much time because the DNA cellulose takes weeks to dry.

What else are you involved in on campus?
I have been a volunteer of Health Leads for three semesters now. Health Leads is a volunteer group that addresses the socio-economic needs of patients in impoverished areas. We help patients at St. Agnes Hospital obtain resources that can help them access employment, health insurance, adult education, and many more benefits. Starting in fall 2012, I will be a Campus Coordinator of Health Leads. In addition, I am peer mentor for Psychology 100 and President of the Vietnamese Student Association.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
Do not be afraid to approach faculty members about being a part of their research. If they see that the student is passionate and sincere about their research, then they will happily let the student in their lab. Our campus is full of research resources, you simply have to ask, and someone will guide you.

You can access your Faculty Annual Report by logging in to myUMBC, and then choosing the Faculty Center. The link to the Faculty Annual Report is in the section titled Personal Profile.

The first screen in the Faculty Annual Report is the Personal Profile. This screen is where all your work will originate. You can define which sections that apply to you, which sections that you need to complete, and which sections that you have already completed. In addition, it also keeps your personal information and the department to which you belong.

Check to see that your name is correct and completed. If it is incorrect or not completed, simply erase it by highlighting that specific section and retype it correctly.

Check to see if you are classified in the correct Department. If not, then click the arrow at the end of the Department tag and select your appropriate department.

Under Please check only the sections that apply to you, select the appropriate sections by clicking in the empty box next to the specified section. If a section is selected for you that you do not need, then click on the box to deselect that section. By checking a section, you are telling the FAR to track that section in the Completed / To Be Completed drop down boxes.

If you are not sure whether a section applies to you, you can click the section name for a brief description.

There are certain sections that have an asterisk (*) next to them. An asterisk means that the section is a multiple entry section.

Once you are done selecting the sections that apply to you, click the Apply Changes button. If you do not click this button, your changes will not be saved.

Click Ok on the Javascript application box.

The sections that you indicated by a check should be in the To Be Completed Section.

If you decide that you do not like what you selected and would like to restore the sections that were selected before, you can click the Reset button, and then the Apply Changes button.

March 1, 2013

PRESS RELEASE

NOXILIZER ACQUIRES JAPANESE-BASED SAIAN CORPORATION ASSETS AND EXPANDS NITROGEN DIOXIDE STERILIZATION PRODUCT LINE FOR GLOBAL LIFE SCIENCE MARKETPLACE

Noxilizer increases product offering and accelerates commercialization activities to support pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device customers.

(Baltimore, MD and Wakayama-shi, Japan – March 1, 2013) Noxilizer, Inc. and SAIAN Corporation announced today Noxilizer’s asset acquisition of SAIAN Corporation. Both companies have been involved in developing nitrogen dioxide as a sterilization solution for pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies, as well as hospitals. The strategic acquisition is intended to strengthen the global effort to promote acceptance and growth of nitrogen dioxide sterilization as a powerful and less-expensive alternative
to current sterilization methods.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sterilization technology represents one of the more important innovations in medical device sterilization in over 20 years. As a room temperature sterilization alternative to ethylene oxide (EO), gamma and hydrogen peroxide, Noxilizer provides an option for companies to save significant costs by safely sterilizing in house, allowing inventory release in just hours versus days. Other benefits provided by nitrogen dioxide sterilization include: a true room temperature process, improved materials compatibility, much faster cycle time and no concerns about residuals. All important factors as pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies continue to innovate and grow.

“Noxilizer’s acquisition of SAIAN Corporation assets will immediately bring an expanded line of NO2 sterilization products to our customers in the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device markets. SAIAN’s unique approach to providing sterilizers with onboard sterilant generation and abatement capability offers great advantages in room temperature sterilization which we believe will greatly benefit our customers. We are excited about the opportunity to introduce breakthrough sterilization technology as a means to improve customer productivity and build shareholder value. The agreement also establishes Noxilizer as a global player in the life science sterilization market, including the important Japanese market,” says Lawrence Bruder, President & CEO of
Noxilizer, Inc.

“We are very excited to bring a strong product contribution to Noxilizer. Noxilizer has already developed a presence in the market and is generating revenue. The engineering team in Japan looks forward to working together,” says Ryuichi Iwasaki, formerly CEO of SAIAN and now General Manager, Noxilizer Japan KK. Ryuichi Iwasaki will lead the team in Japan and report to Lawrence Bruder.

SAIAN Corporation’s leading investor since inception is The University of Tokyo Edge Capital Co., Ltd. based in Tokyo, Japan. “We believe in the power of nitrogen dioxide sterilization and the ability to impact the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device markets. The potential for both companies to be successful increases when they work as one. Our investment team has great confidence in the leadership and looks forward
to continuously investing in the potential of nitrogen dioxide sterilization enabled by Noxilizer and combined with SAIAN assets, together with a wider range of investment groups in the US and Japan,” says Tomotaka (Tommy) Goji, Managing Partner & President of UTEC.

Noxilizer’s headquarters will continue to be in Baltimore, MD. Noxilizer Japan KK is a newly formed subsidiary located in Wakayama-shi, Japan.

About Noxilizer, Inc.:
Noxilizer has a unique and superior NO2-based sterilization technology that is revolutionizing two major sterilization markets — pharmaceutical/biotechnology/medical device manufacturing and hospitals. In the manufacturing market, Noxilizer provides sterilization services for next generation medical devices and drug/device combination products. Noxilizer also sells the RTS 360 Industrial NO2 Sterilizer to companies that sterilize their own products. In hospitals, Noxilizer is developing a system especially for the sensitive, high-tech equipment used in minimally-invasive surgical procedures. The company was founded in 2004 and is privately held. Investors include: CHV Capital in Indiana, Maryland Healthcare Product Development Corporation and the University of Tokyo Edge Capital Co., Ltd. (UTEC), as well as angel investors. Noxilizer is located at the University of Maryland Baltimore County Technology Center in Baltimore, MD and
Wakayama-shi, Japan.

Media Contact:
Angela S.
Maryland scores high as a home for biotechnology companies. But Baltimore? Not so much.

Maryland has more than 500 core bioscience companies, representing
about 8 percent of the U.S. industry, according to the Maryland
    Biotechnology Center.

But much of that action is near Interstate 270 in Montgomery County
on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. That region has the fifth-highest
concentration of biotech companies in the U.S. — ahead of Philadelphia
and just behind Los Angeles — according to a report from commercial real
estate services firm Jones Lang LaSalle.

“It probably has a lot to do with the federal agencies ...

Baltimore may not yet rank with Boston and San Francisco as a biotech hub, but it
does have its share of startups. Here are a few of them.

BioMarker Strategies

The company is developing a test called SnapPath to detect tumor cells. It
was one of the first tenants at the Science and Technology Park at Johns
     Hopkins.

BioMarker got off to a quick start in 2009 with $1.7 million in private placement
funding that was part of the Maryland Biotechnology Investment
Incentive Tax Credit Program. The largest investment came from the Abell
Foundation to enhance the quality of life in Baltimore.

Subsequent funding has included $250,000 from the federal Therapeutic Discovery
Tax Credit Program and several million dollars from the National Cancer Institute.

PathSensors

This environmental and food-testing company is developing a line of
biosensors to detect bacteria in the food-processing industry. Founded
in 2010, it was one of the companies tapped last year by the state
Department of Business and Economic Development’s InvestMaryland
    program. PathSensors received $200,000.

PathSensors is an example of biotech migration in Maryland. It was spun out of a Rockville company called Innovative Biosensors.

PathSensors CEO Ted Olson licensed the technology and set up shop at the University of Maryland biopark in Baltimore.

Cerecor Inc.

Cerecor is focused on prescription pharmaceuticals for the human nervous system.

“We’re not your typical startup in that we’ve got a lot of gray hair,” said Dr. Blake Paterson, co-founder and CEO.

Paterson is a serial entrepreneur and past CEO of Alba Therapeutics. Co-founder Isaac Blech established several biotech companies, including Celgene Corp. Co-founder Dr.Solomon Snyder is a National Medal of Science winner and a co-founder of Nova Pharmaceuticals.

Last year, Cerecor raised $22 million in Series A financing. This year, it
plans to move into preclinical development with a new use for an
existing drug, a pathway likely to speed up regulatory approval.

GrayBug LLC

The company’s lead product is a drug to treat neovascular diseases,
including age-related macular degeneration. GrayBug also has proprietary
technology that allows drug delivery into the eye while minimizing
    inflammation.

The technologies were invented by co-founders Justin Hanes, Peter Campochiaro, Peter McDonnell, and others.

Last year, GrayBug raised more than $1 million from investors and received a
$200,000 grant from the Maryland Biotechnology Center through.

Plasmonix Inc.

While it might seem counterintuitive, funding can be difficult to find when you need only a couple million dollars.

“We are too small for most [venture capital] funds. For some of our old
friends on the West Coast, we are geographically undesirable,” said CEO Bill Gust.

Plasmonix is working with metal nanoparticles to enhance luminescent signals for
use in life science and diagnostic assays. Possible applications include
cosmetics, apparel, paints, lighting, solar and communications.

“We hope to be introducing our first product in the second quarter. But we
are still tweaking the development,” Gust said. “I feel a little like
the 49ers on the 5-yard line. We only have five more yards to go.”
