ASME Forms New Alliance

<Tagline>STEM Organizations on Campus are Uniting Towards Common Goal</Tagline>

This past week, ASME leadership, including:

Emily Schultheis, President

Andrew Brow, Student Project Manager

Andy Ims, Student Project Manager

met with the leadership of several other STEM organizations including:

IEEE Graduate Division

IEEE Undergraduate Division

SIAM Graduate Division

MEGSA Graduate Division

SWE Undergraduate Division

IEEE Graduate leaders hosted the panel, and proposed that we discuss how to "Promote Engineering Research at UMBC". ASME leaders extended a proposal to the other five organizations that would entail an alliance for the purpose of organizing:

Online Research Portfolio Platform - for all members of the substituent societies, fostering community interaction within our university, outside our university, and provide a written record of our students' accomplishments viewable to potential graduate schools

Thesis Defense Competitive Workshop - a workshop in which members present experimental designs of projects they plan to finish in the next year, receive feedback from a student/professorial panel, and receive recognition of excellence in given categories

Researchers of America Competitive Conference - a "science fair style" conference, composed of graduate students, undergraduate students, and high school students who will present independent research to a series of professors and local professionals acting as judges to award scholarship prizes to the most excellent research in the given categories

ASME has named the total alliance of these organizations, "Researchers of America" and has expansion past UMBC borders in mind. ASME drafted the formal proposal for Researchers of America last week. After the proposal was approved by all members of the ASME leadership board, the proposal was circulated to the associated organizations listed above. It is currently being reviewed by leaders of the organization. The final draft of the proposal will be made available to ASME members in the "Documents" section of this site as soon as it has been approved by all involved organizations (estimated for the end of this week).

As stated in the first GBM, interdisciplinary involvement is a top priority for ASME leadership. This alliance will encourage interactive behavior among its STEM community.

These leaders and ASME leaders are anxious to gain an audience with President Hwrabowski for the purpose of introducing this endeavor, seek advice, and pursue preparation for all of the involved components. ASME hopes to host the first Researchers of America Competitive Conference in spring 2014. However, the Online Research Portfolio Platform and Thesis Defense Competitive Workshop are planned to be executed this semester (spring 2013) and fall 2013 respectively.

=================================================

Week of the 24th updates

Hey Booya!
Great work this weekend at Saint Mary's. We really did an exemplary job working as a team, showing our full skills and staying positive. With one good tournament under our belt, we have plenty more to do. Please read everything below and make comments if you have any questions.

Team dues are due no later than March 1st to Dan. Once again it's $15.

High Tide spring break money is due no later than March 1st to Dan. The preferred payment method is by cash or check, which should be made out to Dan. If there are issues with this, let him know ASAP.

As also mentioned on the FB page, everyone needs to sign up/renew a USAU membership in order to play in any more tournaments this spring. You can sign up online & pay via Paypal. This does require a fee. If you have issues signing up, contact Lorenzo ASAP. http://www.usaultimate.org/membership/default.aspx

The blood drive that we are sponsoring is this wednesday the 27th. Please make sure you know what times you're signed up for. If you want to volunteer or give blood and aren't signed up, there is still time.

Instead of having a formal meeting, we will likely be having another news post similar to this one within a week or so outlining changes, future plans, and 'the state of the club.' So, be on the lookout.

The admins and captains have been overloaded quite a bit recently and haven't been the best with communication. Many apologies on our behalf, and we want to let everyone know that we are working hard to clean up the few setbacks that our team & club have experienced.

NASCAR crash, NASCAR clamp

Not everyone goes to a NASCAR race expecting to part of the action.

But that’s exactly what happened to fans on Saturday when a crash at the Daytona International Speedway caused debris to fly into the stands. According to CNN multiple specatators were injured, at least two of them critically.

And while everyone’s first reaction is to call for help, their second reaction is to take pictures—or in this case, video.

Footage of the crash quickly popped up on YouTube, but only minutes later it was taken down for copyright reasons.

In the hours after the crash the video has started to show up on other websites, and has even been uploaded to other YouTube accounts. Steve Phelps, NASCAR Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer has since released a statement in an attempt to explain why the original video was blocked:

“The fan video of the wreck on the final lap of today’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race was blocked on YouTube out of respect for those injured in today’s accident. Information on the status of those fans was unclear and the decision was made to err on the side of caution with this very serious incident.”

While some people have accepted NASAR’s reasoning, others are more skeptical. According to @Sportsfeeder1 on Twitter:

“Fan video of crash is removed from youtube because Nascar is claiming copyright violation. If they can’t make money of video, no one can!”

Others have expressed that in the very least, it’s not right for NASCAR to take down firsthand footage of crashes but then show footage from event cameras later.

What do you think? Should the video be taken down out of respect for those injured, or do we have a right to see what can happen at a NASCAR event? Share your thoughts below.

Run for SGA 2013-2014: Application Open Now

    by Craig Berger

It's hard to believe, but it's that time of year again: in less than one month from today, the UMBC Student Government Association's (SGA's) Election Board will have collected a list of names who made the decision to run for office in UMBC's nationally-recognized SGA. I'm hoping your name will be on that list.

Each spring (in 2013, Monday, April 22--Wednesday, April 24), the undergraduate student body at UMBC elects students to 20 positions. You choose 11 Senators, 5 Finance Board Representatives, a Vice President for Student Organizations, a Treasurer, an Executive Vice President, and a President. Each of these positions within SGA presents a terrific opportunity to make a difference on campus and beyond. Please know that no experience is mandatory to apply for a position--participants receive training and guidance as they identify campus problems, bring members of our campus community together, and improve the quality of life of all UMBC undergraduates.

Starting now, the Election Board is launching its website – http://electsga2013.wordpress.com -- to provide you with as much information as possible on the process of running for a position within SGA. In order to run for SGA office, you must complete a candidate application with some basic information about who you are and why you want to run. All applications will be due before Spring Break, on Friday, March 15th at 5:00 p.m. After Spring Break, all eligible candidates will receive more information via e-mail regarding next steps, including campaigning. In addition to containing a candidate application, the site has information about the structure of SGA, available positions, eligibility requirements, and more. The Election Board plans to update the site with posts about information sessions, deadlines, and other resources.

I first ran for a student government position in 4th Grade and have always been associated with it, no matter where I have been in my educational journey. What I like about UMBC's SGA is its unique emphasis on using community members' gifts, energy, and relationships to create a platform for both amazing, community-changing successes and useful failures. It takes courage to make yourself vulnerable and to put your name and ideas in front of your peers, but I see so many students who take that risk and never look back, discovering a passion or finding a friendship they never knew existed. At the very least, SGA will make you see and think about things differently.
