Disability Day of Mourning March 1 2025

<Tagline>Honoring the Lives of People with Disabilities</Tagline>

Every year on March 1st, the disability community gathers across the nation to remember disabled victims of filicide–disabled people murdered by their family members or caregivers. Earlier this week, UMBC's Women Gender and Equity Center held a vigil as this year it falls on a Saturday.

We see the same pattern repeating over and over again. A family member kills their disabled child or spouse. The media portrays these murders as justifiable and inevitable due to the “burden” of having a disabled person in the family. If the person stands trial, they are given sympathy and comparatively lighter sentences, if they are sentenced at all. The victims are disregarded, blamed for their own murder at the hands of the person they should have been able to trust the most, and ultimately forgotten. And then the cycle repeats within often inadequate and broken social systems.

Since 2012, ASAN and other disability rights organizations have come together at local vigils across the country to mourn those losses, bring awareness to these tragedies, and demand justice and equal protection under the law for all people with disabilities. On March 1st, we will come together again, and we ask you to join us. More information on those lost to filicide worldwide can be found on the Disability Day of Mourning website, which includes an Anti-Filicide Toolkit.

Resources include calling the 988 Crisis Response hotline, and reaching out to support via local resources, including Employee Assistance Programs, Retriever Integrated Health for self-care options.

As federal funding policies continue to evolve, institutions managing
service centers must proactively adapt to potential reductions in
research funding and shifting cost recovery limitations.

This session
explores the financial and operational complexities of service center
management, focusing on advanced cost analysis, rate setting strategies,
external user pricing, and compliance with federal guidelines. With
ongoing discussions surrounding limitations on indirect cost
recovery—such as the recently proposed 15% cap at NIH—institutions face
increased pressure to maximize cost recovery while ensuring compliance.

This session will examine strategies for optimizing service center
operations, developing sustainable financial models, and leveraging
alternative revenue sources. Through real-world case studies and
interactive discussions, participants will learn how to align their
service center structures with institutional priorities while navigating
federal cost principles, financial sustainability, and external audit
    expectations.

Learning Objectives

Join us for this informative session, where we will:

Analyze cost structures and rate-setting methodologies to ensure
financial sustainability while maintaining compliance with federal
    guidelines.

Explore strategies for mitigating the impact of potential reductions in federal research funding on service center operations.

Discuss best practices for maximizing cost recovery, including external user pricing and appropriate subsidy allocations.

Identify key considerations for aligning service center financial management with evolving federal funding priorities.

This session is ideal for research administrators, financial
managers, and institutional leaders responsible for overseeing service
center operations and research support facilities. Attendees should have
a working knowledge of service center cost recovery principles and
    federal funding regulations.

OPTIMIZING ANNUAL ENERGY OUTPUT OF LUMINESCENT SOLAR CONCENTRATORS FOR BUILDING-INTEGRATED PHOTOVOLTAICS

<Tagline>REMINDER: ME Seminar, Fri, 2/28/25, ENG 112, 2:30 PM</Tagline>

Dr. Diana-Andra Borca-Tascuic, professor, mechanical, aerospace and nuclear engineering department, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will be visiting on Friday, February 28, to give a seminar. Please see seminar abstract and her biography below.

Abstract:

Building-integrated photovoltaics are part of the engineering solutions portfolio being developed to address the climate crisis and meet the rapidly evolving decarbonization legislation worldwide. The luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) is a niche solar concentrator technology with the potential to be integrated into building-integrated photovoltaics. It consists of a transparent plastic sheet embedded with a luminescent species and lined with solar cells along its edges. Acting as a waveguide, it directs light

from its larger surface onto much smaller-area photovoltaics. This technology offers

several advantages, including better utilization of solar cells, effective performance in diffuse light conditions, and the ability to serve as a multifunctional envelope for vertical walls in the built environment. However, its single-digit efficiency remains a major barrier to commercialization, primarily due to escape cone losses through the light-receiving surface. Additionally, the lack of comprehensive annual energy production estimates in the literature limits understanding of its practical potential.

This talk examines the performance of wedge-shaped LSCs utilizing inorganic luminescent phosphors, which enhance energy capture at incidence angles that conventional solar panels do not effectively utilize. This behavior is studied experimentally by comparing the performance of a solar cell embedded in an LSC to one directly exposed to illumination. Using laboratory-measured power ratios and direct normal irradiance data from two case studies—Phoenix, AZ, and Albany, NY—the annual energy production for direct-beam irradiance in wedge-shaped LSCs mounted on vertical walls was determined.

Bio:

Diana-Andra Borca-Tasciuc is a professor in the mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she has been a faculty member since 2006. She holds a B.S. in physics from Bucharest University and a M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is a recipient of the 2008 NSF CAREER Award and the 2013 Fulbright Scholarship. Her research interests lie in energy conversion, with a current focus on power harvesting micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), solar energy integration in building envelopes, and nanoscale thermal transport processes. Her work spans both fundamental and applied research, leading to over 100 journal articles and conference proceedings, as well as several patents and patent applications.

Light refreshments will be provided.

See you there!
