Remembering Scott Hannon ’86, ’90 MS Phys

We are deeply saddened to report that Scott Hannon ’86, ’90 MS physics, passed away last Thursday night after a nearly two-year battle with cancer. Scott remained at UMBC for 22 years as a Research Assistant in the Physics Department/Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology. Scott was continuously involved with the development of new meteorological and climate satellites while at UMBC. In particular, Scott developed radiative transfer algorithms that were highly regarded throughout the meteorological community and are in continuous, operational use at both NOAA and NASA. We have shared more about Scott’s life and legacy here.
Private services were held for Scott, and condolences may be sent to the Hannon family at 6614 Jacks Court, Mount Airy, MD 21771.

Division of Culture and the Arts – Music Collections Inventory and Photography
The junior fellow will advance a project (begun earlier with interns) to research and compile an inventory of music-related collections at the National Museum of American History. These collections are held not only by the Division of Culture and the Arts, but also by the Archives Center, Political History, Armed Forces, Mechanisms, and Home and Community Life. The project is part of a Smithsonian-wide music initiative begun with a Level One Consortia grant, and advocated and encouraged by the Smithsonian Institution’s Undersecretary of Art, History & Culture Richard Kurin. The junior fellow will also work with the curatorial staff to identify selected objects that have not been photographed (except for registrar purposes) and work with the NMAH photographers to get them individually photographed in the Photo Lab. The resulting pictures will be used on the NMAH website and made available to the larger Smithsonian Music initiative, one of whose goals is a website that brings together
music-related resources across the Institution. Stipend: $6000.
Ideally you should be available to start some time during the month of January 2013.

Banerjee, Lachut receive best paper nomination for work with green homes
“Minimizing Intrusiveness in Home Energy Measurement”, a paper written by CSEE Assisant Professor Nilanjan Banerjee, Computer Science graduate student David Lachut, and their colleagues at the University of San Francisco, was nominated for the best paper award at ACM's BuildSys workshop.
The paper outlines the design of a system that will analyze and manage energy use in homes. “The overarching goal of our work is to automate the process of adapting energy demand to meet supply, which requires a comprehensive understanding of home energy use,” explains the abstract. Banerjee and his collaborators have collected data on energy-consumption from six both on and off-grid homes. “Our techniques reduce the energy footprint of the system as well as the amount of physical infrastructure required, making adoption of the system more attractive, particularly to those who live in homes powered by renewable energy sources.”
