Scenes from Election Night Extravaganza (photos)

On Tuesday SGA hosted its third quadrennial Election Night Extravaganza, a gathering for the UMBC community to watch election returns, talk politics, feast on pizza and drink coffee into the night. The crowd seemed most energized at the moment the networks announced Barack Obama had been reelected President of the United States, and throughout the night when results from Maryland's Question 6 (Marriage Equality) were posted on the big screen on The Commons' Main Street.

UMBC Study on Economic Impact of Dream Act in National Press Following Vote

On Tuesday, Nov. 6, Marylanders voted to extend in-county/in-state tuition at local community colleges and public universities to undocumented immigrants who graduate from Maryland high schools and meet other requirements. Press following the 59% to 41% Maryland Dream Act victory have cited a recent study on the Dream Act’s economic impacts by UMBC’s T.H. Gindling (economics) and Marvin Mandell (public policy).

Their study concludes, “the Dream Act would generate $66 million in economic activity for each incoming new class of undocumented students.” See the website of UMBC’s Maryland Institute for Policy Analysis and Research (MIPAR) for the original working paper: “Private and Government Fiscal Costs and Benefits of the Maryland Dream Act.”

New President, New Start :)

<Tagline>lets get this ball rolling!</Tagline>

Ok guys, I am here to announce that I have taken over as President of the League of Legends Club with the help of the former president and founding member, Amanuel. There is still some paperwork to be done, but other than that, let start holding meetings! I am going to start a discussion thread with a poll to find out what day(s) are good for the majority of members for meetings to be held and then we can move on from there!

As for me, I will introduce myself some. My name is Nick. My IGN is "AG Ashes". I am a huge competitive gamer. I started off as a semi pro in gears of war 1 and 2. I went to 3 MLG events for those games. I then played with a semi pro team for halo reach but realized that was not for me at MLG DC. I then switched to League of Legends and am now the support for a team called Alchemy Gaming Aqua. We are proudly sponsored by Alchemy Gaming and we are hoping to become a professional team in season 3. I am a platinum player in solo queue and I stream almost daily. (www.twitch.tv/thyAshes) I hope to get this club active again with a team, some tournaments, maybe lessons offered by me or pro players that I can get in contact with. I also have a post on reddit about how to gain elo in solo queue

Thank you for your interest in this club. Hopefully we can get things going!

<Tagline>Maureen explains how voting honors her family</Tagline>

Voting to Honor My Family

Maureen Evans Arthurs ’13, Gender and Women’s Studies, was recently selected as one of just 10 U.S. college students to serve on the 2012–13 National Student Advisory Council for the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

Every vote counts; however, post-election buzz has a lot of people on the ‘other side’ grumbling that their vote didn’t matter. It did. If you took the time to exercise your constitutional right to vote for elected officials, it mattered on a local, state and even at a federal level. President Obama and Mitt Romney were not the only candidates on your ballot yesterday. Whether cast in person or mailed absentee, your vote determined the outcome of important amendments, ballot measures and the appointment of representatives in your home state. Of course, one votes with hope that their particular candidate will win; however, is that the only reason? Expressing your opinions and right to vote goes beyond who wins and who ‘loses’.

I voted to honor my family and those who came before me who never had the chance. My strong sense of political efficacy comes from an awareness of my own family’s experience, over generations, with being denied the right to vote.

Even after African Americans and women legally gained the right to vote, my mother and grandmother faced voter intimidation and suppression tactics: many of which, sadly, were used yesterday against minorities in multiple states. Humbly, it is incredibly empowering to me to essentially be the first in my family to have the birthright to walk up the street with my son and cast my ballot with no fear of retribution. I voted to express my views and also out of respect for those who came before me and who fought for this right.

We are excited to announce that a Task Force has been established to research and develop a plan for establishment and implementation of shared services centers at UMBC. In accordance with UMBC's tradition, the Task Force will seek input from all UMBC stakeholders, and will maintain open two way communication as to its progress. The task force is confident that our work will contribute to UMBC's reputation and future as we stay focused on the academic program, supporting people, and pursuing our priorities of effective and efficient administrative infrastructure to accommodate our continued growth.

We encourage the UMBC community to provide ideas and input to the task force as we move forward. We have established this myUMBC group to provide updates on progress and as a vehicle to communicate with us. Please go to your myUMBC home page, choose "Groups" from the drop down menu, then "Browse/Search Groups" for the "Shared Services Centers at UMBC" group. Click the blue "Follow Group" button on the top left. This will enable you to communicate with the Task Force and enable the Task Force to provide you with updates as we move forward on this initiative.

We look forward to working with all of you.
