1. Make sure Edit Mode is ON
2. Click on the Course Tools area of the Control Panel
3. Select Send Email from the drop down menu
4. Select a recipient type and then proceed to enter and submit your message
   • All Users: Send email to all users in the Course
   • All Groups: Send email to all of the Groups in the Course
   • All Teaching Assistant Users: Send email to all of the Teaching Assistant users in the Course
   • All Student Users: Send email to all of the Student users in the Course
   • All Instructor Users: Send email to all of the Instructor users in the Course
   • All Observer Users: Send email to all Observer users in the Course
5. Alternatively, you may Select Users to individually select recipients, or Select Groupsto email to a specific group or team assigned by the instructor.
   • Single/Select Users: Select which users will receive the email
   • Single/Select Groups: Select which Groups will receive the email
   • Single/Select Observer Users: Send an email to selected Observer users
6. Enter Email details. Fill in the Subject line. In the Message area, type your comments
7. If you are attaching a file, click on the Attach a File link. This will add a section to the page. Click on the Browse button to select a file on your computer. When you have selected the file, click Open. This attaches the file to the email message
8. Click Submit

• Blackboard courses are auto-created and auto-enrolled from the Student Administration (SA) system containing all official registration and enrollment data. 
  • Tip: Check How do I access my official class roster? to confirm you have access.
• In Blackboard, if you do not see your course and you are an instructor, please confirm that your department's scheduling coordinator has correctly entered your name in the schedule of classes. 
• If you are not the instructor of record, make sure all steps have been followed in the new full- or part-time employee account creation process.
  • Blackboard course shells are not created for those courses who have STAFF listed as the instructor (see example below).
  • System Administrators must also manually create courses categorized as independent study or research (see example below). Please complete the Blackboard course shell request form located on http://doit.umbc.edu/services/requestbbshell/
    
• Verify the Course module:

1. In the upper right corner of the My Courses module, click on the gear icon
2. Look for "1. Edit Courses List" section. Check/Uncheck the the boxes for any courses you wish or no longer wish to view
3. Click Submit

Students

When you register for a class you are automatically enrolled into the Blackboard system for that course within approximately 2 hours. There could be a couple of reasons why you may not be able to see your Blackboard course.

• Your instructor has NOT made the course available to students yet. Here's a video on how your instructor can make your course available. Also, your instructor may wait to make the course available to students or may not use their Blackboard course. Contact your instructor to see if the course will use Blackboard and if the course has been made available to students.

• You have a portal-only, limited access account. You need to upgrade. Here's the instructions on how to upgrade to a full access account. Here's a visual clue for a portal account - there's no Mail, Calendar, or Blackboard link next to your name:

• You are a new student and have not created and activated your myUMBC account so Blackboard has not added you to any courses. You can activate your account at http://accounts.umbc.edu
• You have been dropped from the class or there is some other registration problem. In this case, contact your instructor to see if you are enrolled in the course.
• If it doesn't show up in the Blackboard "Check My Activity (CMA)" module (see image below), it doesn't mean you are not enrolled or you don't have access. Make sure you go to the full Blackboard site, http://blackboard.umbc.edu, to view your list of courses.
   

Other reasons you may not see your Blackboard course

• You may be accessing the course during the weekly maintenance schedule. Click here to see the schedule.
• Check the DoIT News for any unscheduled or unexpected downtime. Click here for all Blackboard related announcements from DoIT
• Make sure your pop-up blockers are off.

• Try accessing the page directly instead of going through myUMBC. Type the following into the address bar:

  http://blackboard.umbc.edu

1. Select Groups in the Users and Groups section on the Control Panel
2. Point to Create Single Group on the Action Bar to access the drop-down list on the Groups listing page
3. Select Self Enroll or Manual Enroll (See Group Membership information.)
4. Type a Name and optional Description on the Create Group page
5. Select Yes to make the Group Available or select Sign-up Sheet Only
6. Select the Tools available to the Group by selecting the appropriate check boxes
7. Select the Grade option and type Points possible for Blogs, Journals, and Wikis, if student submissions will be graded
8. Select the check box for Allow Personalization to allow individual Group members to add Personal Modules to the Group Homepage
9. Select the Sign-up options for Self-Enroll, including titling the Sign-up Sheet. Select the Maximum Number of Members. Select any other sign-up options you want to include. OR in the Membership section for Manual Enroll, select the students from the Items to Select box and click the right-pointing arrow to add the selected names to the Selected Items box.
10. Click Submit.

2. Down arrow and choose groups
3. Choose to create a single group or group set

Instructors can create a single group or multiple groups in which students can be enrolled manually, automatically, or by allowing the students to enroll themselves. These enrollments can be changed at any time.

• Manual enrollment involves the Instructor selecting each member one at a time from a list of all the students in the Course.
• Random Enrollment is best suited for multiple groups, where the Instructor allows the system to divide up all the members of the Course among all the groups based on criteria chosen by the Instructor.
• Self Enrollment allows the students themselves to become members of groups by using Sign-Up Sheets that Instructors create for each Course Group.
  4.Students will see the group they are assigned to under the content buttons under the heading of My groups
  5. Groups could be set up in the content area with a tool link or used with adaptive release

To edit your contacts while using Gmail, follow these steps:

1. Sign in to your Gmail account, and click Contacts under Mail on the left-hand side of the page.
2. In the middle column of Contacts, select a specific personal contact.
3. Make the necessary changes to the contact's information, and click Save.

If you do not see a Category (e.g. Extra Credit category) you want to use, a new category can be created.

1. Place your cursor over Manage on the Full Grade Center page > select Categories
2. Click Create Category and type in the Name and optional Description. This category will now be added to the list of Categories in the drop down menu

Clicking on the DirectSubmit link takes you to a screen where you can submit papers on behalf of students. This is not recommended, because it is best if the students submit their own papers. By submitting, they are agreeing to the plagiarism policy.

1. Go to the Control Panel inside your course
2. Click SafeAssign under Course Tools
3. Click Direct Submit on the SafeAssign page
   

   • You can upload files to either a Shared or Private folder. Shared: Viewable by other instructors with access to Direct Submit. Private: Viewable only by the instructor.

4. Choose Shared or Private
5. Click Submit A Paper
6. Under Paper Submission, select all desired areas
7. Click Submit
