10/10/2012 GBM Recap

<Tagline>Notes from Booya's first, mandatory GBM of the semester</Tagline>

The following are notes on the topics covered at the GBM on October 10, 2012 at 8:30 PM in the Commons by the Yum Shoppe.

Officer roles

PJ reviewed the current officers and stated some of each officer's responsibilities.

The president, currently PJ, is responsible for making sure everything on the team is running. The president communicates with the UMBC Sports Club Council and submits forms as required by the SCC. The president will manage the officers and run team meetings. The president will pick-up other responsibilities as needed.

The vice president, currently Thomas, is responsible for intra-team activities and for communicating administrative actions with the players. The vice president organizes fundraising events in collaboration with the treasurer and organizes volunteer events.

The treasurer, currently Dan, is responsible for all things monetary. The treasurer is responsible for ordering merchandise including but not limited to clothing, discs, and team paraphernalia. The treasurer will distribute money to partially cover transportation costs as incurred during tournaments and other events. The treasurer will coordinate volunteer efforts with the vice president.

The secretary, currently Oliver, is responsible for assisting the president, vice president and captains in keeping track of players and preparing for tournaments. The secretary will maintain the team's USAU roster. The secretary will help the captains with registering the team for tournaments.

The captains, currently Will and Lorenzo, are responsible for all things related to field operations including practices, tournaments, and conditioning.

Complete Team Roster

Thomas collected information from each player. For players who missed the GBM, please contact Thomas or Oliver to have your information added to the team roster. Information on the roster includes the player name, USAU ID #, email address, phone number, practice availability and more.

Communication

PJ reiterated Information in the http://my.umbc.edu/groups/ultimate/news/16842 News post about team communication.

Tournaments

PJ relayed basic information about tournaments and the procedure for signing up for a tournament.

To indicate your interest in attending a tournament, sign up for the tournament on the event under the Events tab on this myUMBC group.

Tournaments that are close enough to allow us to return to UMBC each day will have an event object for each day of the tournament. Players should sign up for the day(s) that they are available. Some tournaments may require a commitment to spend both days in the tournament locale.

Players must sign up for a tournament at least a week before the tournament takes place. This allows time for the captains to create a roster and for appropriate forms to be submitted to the SCC.

Tournament rosters will be selected on the basis of a player's practice attendance, conditioning attendance, team meeting (GBMs, etc.) attendance, attitude and intensity on the field, and satisfaction of Covenant requirements.

Covenant

Thomas presented something new for this season: a covenant will be made between each player and the team. The player will agree to support the team by making contributions in various ways as described below.

Each player must:

attend at least 2 fundraising events per semester. Ideally, there will be around 5 fundraisers per semester including 1 big fundraiser that all players are expected to attend.

attend each volunteer event. There will be approximately 1 volunteer event per semester at which each player is expected to help out. Player contribution at volunteer events may be in the form of helping to organize the event, coordinating volunteers for the event, or volunteering at the event.

attend all practices, conditioning, and tournaments per the player's availability. All effort should be made on the player's part to prioritize attendance at team events. Homework or studying is not a legitimate excuse as each player is expected to manage their time accordingly.

Field Operations

Captains Will and Lorenzo presented information related to field operations.

They discussed the expectation for all players to attend all events as academically possible.

Goals for the semester were presented. During the fall semester, the basis of all players' skills will be developed in order to have a developed, conditioned team in the spring.

The spring break tournament High Tide was discussed as a super fun tournament. Players will be invited near the end of the fall semester to join the team in Georgia for the tournament. Due to the significant monetary investment in organizing the tournament, players must make a firm commitment to travel with the team.

Winter practice and skill maintenance opportunities were discussed. Opportunities include local indoor leagues. Several players will continue to live in the 9 month housing in the apartments and will be available to continue practicing skills with other players.

If you were unable to make it to the meeting, please contact Thomas or Oliver to provide your information for the team roster and contact sheet. Please make every effort to attend team meetings in the future.

When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”

Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”

“Tell me, teacher,” he said.

“Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”

“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.

Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”

Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Reflection

We are invited into a life of worship because of all that Jesus has done for us.We are His crew and therefore all the blessings of God have been poured out on us.But the means to this type of worship is quite contrary to what we or even the world may think, in fact it can seem scandalous in many ways. This story, this encounter, this woman found the means to real worship.By grace she recognized her need and inadequacy to truly worship God, and in turn feel at the feet of the only one who could touch, heal and transform her life.Grace, mercy, forgiveness, and faith…“go in peace.” The woman’s heart was so undone, transformed, and healed by the Lord’s touch in her life. There was no other “reasonable” response for her than to reciprocate what she had received from him in such loving adoration and extravagant worship. Now that is real worship!

Responding to the Transmission

Today we are invited once again into ‘real worship’ by the grace of God, and in the salvation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.Let’s come before the Lord with our ‘many sins and wrong ways’ so we can be touched afresh in His forgiveness, healing, transformation, and peace. Let’s pray that in turn our lives will be a living response of real and extravagant worship to our God.Pray for an overflow that stirs those around us to also come and know our Lord. Receive from Him deeply and ‘go in His peace’ today, extravagantly expressing your love for Him…that will be real worship!
